I see where your coming from. I support the idea of a podcast but I think the majority of members here wouldn’t be interested. Prove me wrong.

Did your band improve AFTER a player left?
BrunoBass replied to Arrowsmith's topic in General Discussion
One of our two guitarists left a year or so ago. I was happy about it, not on a personal level as he’s a good guy, but from a musical perspective it was exactly what we needed. Both guitarists were playing Les Paul type guitars through cranked valve amps, very often playing the same part. Trying to get my bass through the wall of sound was frustrating to say the least. We never even considered replacing him. As a three piece we sound bigger, tighter and punchier. I’ve got loads more room to play in, so yeah we definitely improved. -
Sounds interesting. I listen to several favourite podcasts on my commute every day, would be good to have a bass one to listen to.

Just in from tonight’s gig, our first time at The White Horse in Banbury. Nice friendly staff and punters, but not really our kind of crowd, average age of the punters was probably 60-70 but that said they seemed to enjoy our alt rock covers and there were plenty of positive comments afterwards. I decided to give the newly fitted flatwounds on my Jazz a go, and took my spare roundwound wearing Jazz in case it didn’t work out. It didn’t, horrible boomy tone with no definition. I know flatwounds can work in a rock setting so I need to take some time to fine tune the eq. Anyway, a few songs in I switched over to my J&D and completed the gig with it. And that’s it for pub gigs for us for the next few months as we head into Summer festival season,.

Which bass players play in the upper register like Peter Hook?
BrunoBass replied to shoulderpet's topic in General Discussion
When I saw them they had a second bass player handling the low end stuff. Admittedly that was in 1990 😉 -

Basschat feedback / buying & selling / the people on this forum
BrunoBass replied to dodge_bass's topic in General Discussion
I’ve only done a couple of transactions on Basschat but both have been a pleasure. I’m sure the occasional bad apple comes along to spoil it for somebody but the vast majority of people here are honest, decent people. Basschat would always be my first port of call if I were in the market for something. I don’t trust eBay. -
The last time I clicked on a Photobucket link it took me off to some dodgy fake ad webpage that froze my phone until I’d managed to delete all trace of it from the browsing history. I haven’t and will not click a Photobucket link again. I use Flickr, I’ve been a pro subscriber since 2006 https://www.flickr.com/photos/paul69/

Most gigs I use my ‘good’ gear but occasionally we play rowdier pub gigs (my favourite gigs as it happens) and for those I use the cheap stuff. I’m not worried about stuff getting damaged necessarily, but playing eyeball to eyeball with an up for it crowd means that inevitably beer can get spilt, mic stands can get knocked etc. I look after my gear and don’t abuse it, but I’m not precious about it and if it gets dinged in the line of duty then so be it. I’d just rather the cheap stuff got dinged than the expensive stuff.

playing with a pick is faster - fact or fiction?
BrunoBass replied to lowdowner's topic in General Discussion
Not sure that’s necessaryily a bad thing, some basslines sound much better as all downstrokes, particularly alt rock, punk, metal etc. It’s a subtle difference but a significant one. -
playing with a pick is faster - fact or fiction?
BrunoBass replied to lowdowner's topic in General Discussion
I’ve had to work on my pick technique these last few years; before I joined my current band I’d never played with a pick, only fingers. Whilst we don’t slavishly replicate the songs we play (we’re an alternative rock / indie covers band) we/I try to follow the original song at least fairly closely so if the bassline needs a pick I use a pick (The Hives’ ‘Hate To Say...’ just isn’t going to work with fingers...). I’m still more confident with fingers though, and I found that using flatwounds allowed me to play faster too, I’m not entirely sure why. Conversely we do a couple Green Day songs, which are very much pick basslines, which I play fingerstyle because that’s the way I feel comfortable playing them - control, precision, speed. -
I've just put a set of Fender Stainless Steel flat wounds on my Jazz, in many years of playing bass I'd never played flats before. I think I'll be putting flats on all of my basses- should've tried them years ago...

As a busy gigging band we do get some odd requests from clients sometimes. Not least this one, for a wedding (which we can’t do anyway). I’m not sure in which world asking a rock covers band to play without electricity isn’t a problem? 🤔 Anyone got any strange requests or expectations from clients to share; odd, naive or just plain bonkers?

I currently find myself GASing for a Precision, and with a spare £400 burning a hole in my pocket I was considering a Classic Vibe Squier, until I saw the P7. It’d be good to hear if anyone’s gigging with one?

Thanks, I appreciate that. I’m all sorted now though, I painted it it in the end. Good of you to offer to help 👍🏻

I used to get grief many years ago when I lived with my ex girlfriend about the combo amp that lived in the corner of the living room of our small one bedroom flat. I had nowhere else to put it really but eventually managed to find room to accommodate it in the cupboard under the stairs (which involved building a shoe rack to put on the triangular shaped wall above it). Imagine my joy when I came home one night to find a running machine occupying the space in the living room where my amp had been...

Old thread I know, but I’ve been offered one of these in very good condition at a decent price. I tried one in Guitar Guitar Birmingham about a year ago and was very impressed so I’m tempted. Is anyone gigging with one? Any thoughts?

Zebrano’s my favourite with that body shape.

Quit my band, and no new plans to gig...
BrunoBass replied to AndyTravis's topic in General Discussion
That’s great news. Sending good vibes from my little clan to yours 👍🏻 -
We got double booked for a gig we hadn’t even been booked for... We played at a pub in Warwickshire in February, and left without making a return booking as the girl who booked us was off sick. She then messaged me the other day apologising profusely for double booking us next week and could we reschedule for later in the year? Happy to do so, but we had no booking for next week 😐

I’ve read enough posts about custom service faux pas on here to make me very wary about shopping at Bass Direct, unfortunately.
