What's the worst reception you've ever had doing a gig?
BrunoBass replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
Our former guitarist was really into a fairly recent but still reasonably obscure Rolling Stones song called Doom and Gloom. Pretty rocking track actually, but I wasn’t keen on playing it due to the fact that no one knew it. Anyway, we played it. First song in the set. We finished. Silence... Suffice to say we never played it again. -
Sparse and economical for most of the song, and then a cool little counter melody in the middle eight.

‘72 style P Bass Kit Build finally FINISHED!!!

I love the white with gold, reminds me of the Gretsch White Falcon. I think it looks very striking without being flash. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out! -
A bunch of shots with Til Dawn

Morning! Yes we’re getting there. The newly painted scratchplate is looking great! Thanks for the steer on the ashtray - much appreciated 👍🏻

I think I’ll call this one Dulcie, named for my little daughter. Bruno is my son so it’s only fair 😉... Yeah it’s a bummer about the hole and the other stuff. @kodiakblair is a bit of a PB-50 expert, he thinks they’ve changed factories and are cutting corners on QC to save money.

Much overlooked, John McVie. Solid as a rock for the whole song and then he drops that playful little riff at 2.21. I love those little moments of joy in music 😊

Ever find your cheapest bass has the best tone?

Plus one for the J&D Jazz! I love mine and gig it regularly. My Fender Jazz Deluxe which cost ten times as much does sound better, but not ten times better. -
The way we were... in defence of Later (sort of ...)

I was blown away by At The Drive In back in 2000. The performance of One Armed Scissor was even more frantic, but I couldn’t find that. Amphetamines may have been involved. -
Discovered a great big hole, and the exposed edge of the photo flame paper. I made a video about that too... ...and today I lacquered the neck with amber tint nitrocellulose, sprayed the scratchplate white, and ordered the headstock decal.

I reshaped the headstock to the more usual early ‘50s shape:

I did a review video of the bass, the day I received it. There’s a NBD thread here: and the video review here:

I’m not really sure if doing a few simple modifications to a Harley Benton PB-50 really counts as a build, more a bit of painting and fettling. But anyway, I wanted to get this finished before I move onto the next project, so here’s a few pics about what I’ve done to my two week old bass.

Is anyone else familiar with Doug Stegmeyer? I’ve long been an admirer of his tasteful but groovy bass work; his playing on Billy Joel’s album ‘The Stranger’ is particularly outstanding.

Sorry I took it the wrong way Dave 🙂 I hardly have time for one band, let alone multiple bands! As I say, tonight is crunch time so let’s see if we can’t come to a resolution.

Those of you that use Facebook could do worse than to check out the CLF Research account: https://www.facebook.com/clfresearch/ A regular feed of photos and information about Leo’s post Fender work. Prototypes, mules, contemporary brochures, adverts etc. Today they’ve put up a MM price list from 1976. £365 for a Stingray? Yes please!

Well I am in contact with another band, and my band is meeting tonight so let’s see how it goes. Maybe, as you imply, the problem is me. Perhaps so, but if wanting to entertain people is what I’m doing wrong, then there’s no point being in a band at all 🙂

^ Couldn’t have said it better. My home tone and my gig tone are very different. My gig tone sounds horrible in isolation with the mids boosted, but sounds great in the live mix.

Very good point.

Does anyone know what the internal dimensions of a standard ashtray bridge cover are? Ideally I want to fit one over the hi-mass bridge that they’re now fitting to PB-50s. Originally I was going to replace it with a BBOT style bridge, but the holes won’t match up, and filled screw holes on a sunburst finish are not going to look good. I suspect the cover won’t fit over the larger hi-mass bridge.

Wobble’s bass sound on the Invaders stuff is amazing; Ovation Magnum and an octave pedal - earth shaking.

As I ponder my next move I’ve been checking out Join My Band over the last week or two. From previous experience I’ve found it to be full of dreamers and time wasters. And yes, nothings changed; three adverts that look appealing, private messages sent to all, all of them read, not one response. I don’t understand it; why place an advert and then ignore people’s responses? If you don’t like the sound of me, that’s fine, I can take it. Just a response would be appreciated.

Update on this. I’ve asked for a meeting to get this sorted because it’s not going anywhere, and there’s clearly a crack forming between what I want to play and what the drummer and singer/guitarist want to play. Drummer is set in his ways and will not budge, while still suggesting Kasabian album tracks as viable additions to the set... (God how I detest Kadabian), whilst singer/guitarist is slightly more diplomatic but equally stubborn. They’re close friends, I joined them when their original bass player retired, so I think we have two factions forming, which will be hard to come back from. Ironically we had a cracking gig at the weekend, unfortunately intra band politics and attitudes mean that there probably won’t be many more, at least not with this band.
