  1. Guy Pratt was in the band at the time of those early hits.
  2. I recall seeing footage of more than one band from the sixties where there’s a bloke standing there just playing a tambourine. I can’t imagine any band meeting where the urgency of getting a tambourine player in was on the agenda.
  3. Thanks all. Does anymore know what a fair price would be for decent example?
  4. Fantastic band, saw them a few times. I always enjoyed Lou Duffy’s fretless Stingray.
  5. The whole of Simple Minds ‘Empires and Dance’ - one of the first ‘proper’ albums I ever bought. It still sounds fresh, vibrant and current today, nearly forty years on. And Derek Forbes’ basslines are wonderful.
  6. Les Nemes, cracking bass player 👍🏻
  7. One of the great lost classics from the eighties, and one of my all time favourites... And another great lost classic... And one more before I get carried away! i could go on all night... 😊
  8. I went to the cinema in Hong Kong some years ago. It was packed but hardly anyone was watching the film, it was all teenagers chatting to each other, texting, walking around to talk to friends in other rows. No one seemed to mind. It was annoying but I stuck around for the air con!
  9. I’ve seen Frank Turner get annoyed with disrespectful audience members a few times. The last time I saw him there were a couple of girls who were talking and high pitched laughing through out a song when he did an acoustic section. He stopped the song and told them to shut the duck up or get out. At the weekend we had a couple of blokes sat at a table at the front of where we were playing, right in front of a PA speaker, having a full on conversation throughout our second set, surrounded by people dancing and jumping around. I didn’t mind because I don’t think they were being disrespectful, they obviously just fancied a chat. I just thought there might be easier places to do it than in front of a rock band at full tilt! 🙂
  10. They could certainly play live, there is some decent footage on YouTube of them on The Tube in 1984, Mark O’Toole in particular was a decent bass player, but on the records it’s all Fairlight.
  11. I don’t think Paul was the only member of FGTH not doing very much!
  12. Andy Fletcher from Depeche Mode. He has contributed little, if anything, musically since their first album in 1981.
  13. Linda wasn’t much of a musician or singer but she had a distinctive voice that worked well within Wings’ harmonies, a became a recognisable part of their sound. I’m not sure how she’d have sounded in isolation.
  14. It’s become urban legend that the comment came from the band themselves but it actually originated from a 1970s Jasper Carrot sketch.
  15. Thanks, I saw that thread. It’s about the bridge, I’m interested in the instrument as a whole 😊
  16. If it was me I’d stick with the 70s style ‘plate. Colour matched headstock sounds good!
  17. Everybody will have to accept shifts to alternative materials and production methods in every aspect of our lives in the coming years, including musical instruments. The world is changing. As a company car driver I have to accept that all fleet vehicles will soon be hybrid or electric. I’m not fond of the idea, being a bit of a petrolhead, but I accept the inevitability. It’s the same with basses, I’d rather play something made from wood, but I’m not averse to playing something made from, say, a composite material. Vintage (wooden) instruments could be an even more astute investment in the future than they are now.
  18. Three ply white (with a black central ply) would look great, the black pinstripe outline of the pickguard would look understated, very smart I think 😊
  19. I went to an open mic night recently where, at the back of the playing area was a Guild B302. It didn’t get played at all so I didn’t get to hear it, but it’s looks certainly caught my eye. I know little about the B302 and B301, but I’m interested to find out more. What do we think about them? I know Guild have a good reputation but what about the B302 / 01 specifically from those who know, are they good instruments? Feel, tone, value etc? The only person I recall seeing playing one is Nicky Wire from the Manics. Have any other profile players used them? Any information or opinion anyone has would be most welcome, thanks.
  20. Lovely. I quite fancy one of these. I can’t really justify buying on at the moment but it’s on the list.
  21. We were back at The Bell in Bicester last night, fourth or fifth time they’ve had us back, always a great gig - nice pub with a good crowd. Hot and sweaty last night as I knew it would be, so I left the Fender at home and took my cheapo J&D as I knew it’d get drenched, although within half a song I regretted not doing what I’ve been meaning to do for yonks: sand down the glossy neck. Sticky hands all night. No complaints though, we had a blast and made a few new friends too.
  22. A wonderful film it is. I went to see them at Warwick Uni in 1998, it was a special gig.
  23. ‘Pink Moon’ by Nick Drake. One of those I always come back to. It’s just made for these warm, starry nights.
  24. It’s my 50th next year.... a ‘year of birth’ Precision would be most welcome, failing that I’ve wanted a 4001/4003 since I was eleven. MrsBass is welcome to contribute, should she feel the need.
