  1. That’s looking fantastic. I love the knot in the upper horn.
  2. Ha yes the Capri orange is still in pole position! I I still like the idea of aged vintage white but I think orange will win the day 😉
  3. The pick guard arrived this morning - £7.99 including postage off of Amazon, pretty pleased with it for that price. The edges are all smooth, everything seems cut out fairly accurately. It will need a little bit fettling, mainly around the neck pocket but for eight quid I wouldn’t expect any different. It’s started to look like something resembling a bass guitar now. Hopefully my wet and dry papers will arrive today also, so I can prepare the laquer I’ve applied to the headstock to take the decal. I’m still undecided on which colour to paint the body...
  4. How do you find those Wilkinson pickups? I’ve just bought some of the ceramic ones (as opposed to alnico) for a project. They get good reviews, hence why I chose them, but I’m interested in what you think?
  5. We had the same at a pub gig in Northampton. A bunch of Poles (I assume, they were definitely Eastern European but could’ve been from any amount of countries) came in and livened up what had been a fairly reserved crowd up until then, they danced and sang and never sat down. A pity they can’t come to every gig.
  6. We played at The Punch Bowl in Warwick last night, our third time there and probably our best. It’s a lovely place to play, nice crowd and the staff are lovely, friendly and welcoming. We played well; got a great tone from my Jazz and Genz Benz rig, lots of compliments afterwards which was great. Eleven o’clock cut off for music too so I was back home before midnight. Perfect. Next stop for us is The Bell in Bicester, we play there two or three times a year and it’s always a good one.
  7. We’re back at The Punch Bowl tonight if anyone’s out Warwick way.
  8. There’s a bit of a ‘it’ll be ok’ attitude at times. I don’t want it to be ok. I want it to be the best it can be.
  9. That worked a treat, thanks for the tip. Neck next, while I try and decide which colour to paint the thing...
  10. Kind of disastrous: Some years ago my old band were playing at a pub in Warwickshire, we did indie / Britpop covers and it all went down quite nicely. As the night progressed a big gang of people came in, very drunk and clearly very emotional. We found out during the break that it was a wake / funeral party that been going from pub to pub, certain members of whom were (understandably) in some distress. It turned out the wake was for a young lad who’d died in a road accident. Anyway, we go back on after the break. A few songs in and we started to play The Smiths’ ‘There Is A Light The Never Goes Out’, which always went down a storm with it’s big singalong chorus. But as the chorus approached I suddenly had the terrifying realisation that our singer was about to start singing about double decker busses crashing. He sang the line without really realising but as the next line about ten tonne trucks killing the both of us approached he suddenly cottoned on, looked across at me in horror and kind mumbled something along the lines of ‘and if a ten fwww fwww fwww fwww fwww fewww fwwwwww’. I just wanted the ground to open up and swallow me whole, mainly in case we’d offended anyone but partly also because of the state most of the party were in I feared a bad reaction. Luckily no one even noticed (if they did they didn’t react) but it still makes me shiver thinking about it today.
  11. Go full Paul Simonon and do a paint spatter on the ‘guard.
  12. In that context, for me, black looks best. I think you’ve got it right with your punk bass! The maple necked Precision Bass I’m building at the moment will (probably) be aged vintage white with a black ‘guard, a la Squier’s Matt Freeman signature model, which I think looks great (not my picture). Probably not much help, but my thoughts nonetheless 🙂
  13. Thanks for that, I might give that a go. I need to sand the primer next I guess, It has dried feeling rough, almost abrasive so it will have to be smoothed down before I paint the colour, whatever that ends up being.
  14. Auto Colour Match in Banbury sorted me out with nitro primer and nitro gloss clear, both for just under £12.00. I’m not sure how good or poor quality it is but ACM are a long established company in town and the chap recommended them for use on a guitar. And as it’s a fine evening and I had an hour or two before Mrs Bass and Little Basses got home I thought I’d get to work on spraying the body. A few lessons learned here; Firstly, applying the primer has revealed a couple of previously unnoticed spots where the grain hadn’t quite filled properly... Secondly, I was a little too enthusiastic with the spraying and I got a little run straight away (oops). I wiped it off and took more care from then on, hopefully it will sand out. Thirdly, paulownia is a seriously thirsty material. Each pass of primer was touch dry within minutes (not the 20-30 minutes I’d expected). I’d also expected 2-3 costs but after that amount it looked like the body had barely any primer on it. I left it a while and did another pass, left it again awhile and did another pass, and now I’ve got good coverage but it’s swallowed an entire 500ml can. So now I have to decide whether or not to fill the grain again in the areas that didn’t fill sufficiently, or press on and disguise those patches with a bit of light relicing. If I do decide to go that way I’ll need to tint the neck to maintain the vintage look, which I hadn’t planned or budgeted for. The learning curve gets ever steeper...
  15. I hadn’t, mainly because I’d heard car paints can take much longer to harden. But then it was a specialist guitar paint supplier who told me that, so protecting his own interests probably took priority over accuracy... There is a specialist car paint supplier in Banbury, I might give them a shout. Thanks.
  16. Well spotted, thanks! No rattle cans though unfortunately, limited quantities available of the bottles though so perhaps I just missed out 🙂
  17. Well... everybody seems to be out of stock on clear nitro gloss and nitro white primer, no one has any (in aerosols at least)! Presumably the UK suppliers all get it from the same source, they must be experiencing supply issues. Sod’s law they’re the two types I want to order!
  18. The original demos of songs written by Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello in 1988 for Macca’s ‘Flowers In The Dirt’ album. Some of the songs ended up on McCartney albums, some on Costello’s later albums, some never saw the light of day at all. It’s stunning stuff, and I think it ranks amongst McCartney’s best post-Beatles work. Buried treasure indeed...
  19. Not transaction feedback so I don’t know if it’s allowed here, but more a massive thanks to Malcolm who has been very helpful and generous with something I’m working on. Top man, many thanks 👍🏻👍🏻
  20. Looks good. I’ve been buying bits as I go, getting everything together like you’ve done makes more sense. Good luck 👍🏻
  21. Ha if anyone will deserve royalties from that one it’ll be Ampeg 😉
  22. I'll be doing that for my next build, if my idea comes to fruition!
  23. ...forgot to say, I’m still worried about this paulownia body. As I’m drilling, the wood seems to be very soft, almost crumbly, and I still have concerns about it’s integrity. What with all the grain filling as well I think next time I’ll use a different wood. I’ve heard people recommend putting wood glue into screw holes with paulownia; the glue absorbs into the wood and dries around the screw, forming a threaded insert, I’ll try this. The worst that can happen is that the bridge screws pull out under tension. In that case I’ll just buy another body... To illustrate how soft paulownia is, I just noticed this ding, that has somehow happened, with minimal handling, this morning. Nothing a bit of filler can’t handle, but...
