  1. Hi everyone, I’m looking for recommendations for a power tool to rout pickup cavities, neck pockets and the edges of band saw shaped blanks. I’ve used big, hand held plunge routers in a previous life, but I’m guessing something like that would be overkill. What would be a compact, lightweight but sufficiently powerful alternative? Thanks.
  2. Sanding sanding sanding. And more sanding still to do. Lesson learned: remove as much excess grain filler as possible before leaving to dry......
  3. Not often these days, which is a pity as I like the adrenaline. I sometimes get a bit of butterflies in the afternoon before a gig, but once I’ve loaded the car, driven to the gig, loaded in and set up it’s all gone. The last time I got properly nervous was last year when we were second from top of the bill at a local festival, a thousand plus people, the biggest audience we’ve ever played to.
  4. Not on bass in my band, but I tune down half a step for my solo acoustic stuff - it’s easier on my voice.
  5. Yes. I regularly gig my £100 J&D Jazz copy at gigs where I don’t want to take my Fender Jazz Deluxe.
  6. Hobbyist / Weekend Warrior. 25-30 gigs a year (I wouldn’t want to do much more than that), earning a few £££s per gig, although I consider that pocket money rather than income.
  7. Second pass of grain filler today. I mixed it up thicker than the first application (used up the rest of the tub) and really slathered it on, not really what the directions suggest but I managed to cover everything and rub away the excess to reveal some nicely filled grain and a couple of small dings that I hadn’t noticed before, now filled. Next job, sand it back, drill neck holes and apply primer.
  8. I recently saw the attached photo on Instagram, of two Jazz basses with what appears to be just a single volume control. One of my Jazz’s is a passive J&D copy, which I only ever use with both pickups on full and master tone on full, so having just a single volume control appeals. I can’t find a wiring diagram anywhere, does anyone know where to find one, and has anyone performed this modification?
  9. Most times I drive. I have my gear plus one of two PA speakers. Our drummer looks after the other one. Our guitarist brings the mixer, monitors and lights. In my previous job my car was a BMW 1 series, I had a few of them over the years and they were not conducive to transportation of gig gear. I changed jobs last year and now have an estate, so getting all my stuff in is no problem. We have a mate with a minibus too, if he’s around he’ll sometimes drive. We can get all of our gear in easily, and if he drives there’s a rare opportunity for me to enjoy a post gig pint or two.
  10. No photos for me either. Looking forward to seeing the A/B.

    Jazz

...and here it is alongside my J&D ‘70s Jazz, which was an absolute steal and gets gigged regularly. I can’t say enough about how great this bass is, especially for just a shade over £100.

I’ve posted this picture in the Fender thread too, but my MIM Jazz Deluxe is too gorgeous to not post here too! It’s my number one bass, definitely a keeper.
  13. Here’s my number one bass, my MIM Fender Jazz Deluxe. I love it, it’s everything I want a Jazz to be. It plays and sounds amazing. The guy I got it from had it from new, but not for long; he was frightened to take it out live so it was in pristine condition when I got it. I’ve been giving it plenty of gig mileage since!
  14. Same story for me. I’m in sales and only listen to talk radio in the car, mainly BBC 5Live and the various podcasts I enjoy.
  15. How’s it coming along? The grain filling on my project is in progress, but thoughts are now turning to drilling the neck holes. How are you approaching this?
  16. Anything that saves my back and shoulder over a two hour set will be very welcome. I’m wondering if neckdive will be an issue? Luckily the bridge I’ve got is fairly chunky.
  17. Yep the directions recommend mixing it into a thin paste, the consistency of poring cream - it’s a bit of a faff to be honest. For the next project I’ll use a wood that doesn’t need grain filling. I’m not going to bother with sanding sealer, if the grain filler does it’s job I hopefully won’t need it.
  18. The Rustins grain filler arrived this morning so I managed to do one application. What a horrible messy process that is.... one coat liberally applied and then rubbed off as directed. The directions recommend rubbing it in with a rag before rubbing off, but I think on the second application (and it will definitely need a second application) I might brush it on and scrape it off with a plastic spatula, as I’ve seen done on YouTube. I can see why people do natural oiled finishes instead of solid colours. I really want a solid colour and the grain isn’t particularly attractive anyway, so I’m pressing on, but natural seems to be much less hassle than solid colouring such a porous wood. According to the directions I need to leave it a day before sanding, so I’ll do that and a second coat tomorrow hopefully.
  19. The bass playing is generally outstanding. But it’s always the song that comes first for me, and on that count Jamiroquai do little for me.
  20. Thanks. Mine is for a new build so there aren’t any pre-existing holes to match up, hopefully whatever I get will fit, if not I might make my own.
  21. In the last few days my machine heads, bridge and neck plate have all arrived. I’m hoping the grain filler will arrrive tomorrow as I have a bit of spare time when I can do the first application. I’m thinking about adding a tug bar for purely cosmetic reasons too as I think they look pretty cool.
