Nice project, looks great. I’m interested to know what the problem with the black scratchplate was? I’m just about to buy one for my current project and they seem to be readily available on eBay, Amazon etc. Were you looking for something specific?

Not sure what you mean by that?

The guitarist in a band I was in years ago always hankered after an Aria guitar he’d seen Andy Summers playing. The model in question was, according to him, an ‘Aria Proll’ (rhymed with ‘doll’). Still makes me smile whenever I see an Aria Pro II.

Bars/ Pubs And The Inebriated Out Of Control Punters
BrunoBass replied to Bluewine's topic in General Discussion
People usually stay close to home when they go out drinking. The pub culture in the UK is very much about walking or getting a taxi home. Drink driving has become socially unacceptable (it wasn’t always...). I don’t know anyone who would consider, even fleetingly, driving home after a night on the sauce. -
Bars/ Pubs And The Inebriated Out Of Control Punters
BrunoBass replied to Bluewine's topic in General Discussion
I’ve been playing pubs for many years and luckily I’ve witnessed very few unsavoury events. If you play pubs where you are literally eyeball to eyeball with the punters there is always a risk of mic stands being knocked, beer being spilled etc. Comes with the territory, if I didn’t like it I wouldn’t play those kind of gigs. Personally they’re my favourite gigs to play. We’ve had a few incidents where alcohol has energised certain crowd members, not least a few weeks ago where a couple of young ladies who’d had a few decided to stand alongside us and play air guitar; you could say that they had no right ‘invading our space’ but it was good fun, it got all their friends down the front, no harm done. My two favourites were a middle aged, rather attractive lady who came to see us a number of times; we haven’t seen her for a while now but she would stand right in front of our singer, maintain eye contact and dance seductively. We’d be desperately trying to keep from cracking up as he found her so off putting. The other one was a Northern Irish squaddie who kept shouting for us to do Metallica a couple of years ago, whilst his lovely and sober girlfriend looked on horrified. He collared me at the half time break and kept telling me how much he loved Metallica, and that he’d teach me all their bass lines ‘if you want me too, mate’. He then proceeded to attempt to break dance later on before falling backwards over a table, taking everyone’s drinks with him. Last seen being carried out by the door staff. As amusing as that kind of behaviour can be at the time, it’s actually pretty sad that people can get into that state. Pubs have door staff and security now so although people get drunk it’s generally good natured, and any sniff of trouble is dealt with quickly. Attitudes seem to have changed too, people are more chilled these days. I remember when the town centre pubs in Banbury didn’t have door staff, things would and did get ugly frequently, to the point that a lot of people stopped going out, me included. Different times; it was the eighties, lager, football fans etc. Things are better now, I think. -
I’ve been revisiting some of UB40’s early stuff recently, following the recent BBC4 doc. I lost interest once they became effectively a covers band but their first few albums are great; my gateway into reggae, and more specifically reggae and dub bass.

Yes it is, Chinese in origin but it appears to have been despatched from Leicester (it arrived two days after ordering so I’m guessing it was in the same time zone...). I am super impressed with it, the fret work and fret finishing is superb. For less than £30 it’s unbelievable. There is a tiny ding on the back of the neck but I can’t really feel it and it certainly won’t effect playability. On a Custom Shop instrument it wouldn’t be acceptable, but for £28 I think I can live with it! https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F112367277709 (the price has risen slightly since I bought mine).

Not very much: Genz Benz amp and cab (bought used), Fender Jazz Deluxe and J&D Jazz copy (both bought new), various pedals, cables etc plus my in-progress Precision build adds up to well under £2000.

No. Amazing isn’t it? No attempt from the venue to promote that particular gig whatsoever. We shared the hell out of it on social media like we always do but nothing from the pub, not even a poster or an A board outside. They were still happy to hand over £250 at the end of the night though. Not good economics...

We did a pub gig a couple of months ago where at best we had five people watching us, two of whom spent the whole night watching the Anthony Joshua fight on their iPad. You try to adopt the attitude of playing your best whether it’s one person or one thousand, but bloody hell it’s hard sometimes. Ironically we played really well and we got an enquiry for s 21st party so all was not lost! Luckily nights like that are rare but they do happen!

The bridge (high mass type from Warman) and neck plate arrived this morning. Off I went to find some grain filler only to be met with blank looks at all of the potential stockists... shame, as I have a couple of spare hours later when I was planning to fill the grain. Oh well, no hurry. I've ordered a tin of Rustin's from Amazon which should arrive in the next few days.

Thank you. I’ve seen some recommendations for using sanding sealer before grain filling - do you think that’s necesssry? It is indeed a great body, but I’m super impressed with the neck, the fret work is excellent.

Yeah I think I’m heading towards the white, probably a bit less lurid! You didn’t have any issues with your paulownia body?

...but I’m a sucker for orange basses so I’m also thinking orange sparkle or flat Capri orange, I think it might look better with a rosewood ‘board but it’s something I’m thinking about, maybe with a pearloid scratchplate. Decisions...

Not sure yet, I really like the look at the Matt Freeman Signature that Squier had out a few years ago; vintage Olympic White with black ‘plate and amber tinted maple neck. Pete Farndon had a similar one which I always though looked cool...

It looks lovely with no finish or hardware, shame it can’t stay like that.

Jazz bass neck, meet Precision Bass body! Decent fit, but there’s just enough space (less than millimetre) that the neck won’t support the body. I’m thinking of gluing in a little piece of veneer to the inside of the pocket side to tighten the fit up.

Here’s the body, purchased from a UK eBay seller for £31 plus delivery. It’s pretty good, nicely finished and routed. It’s paulownia by the way and very porous from the feel of it, so clearly grain filler is required before I do anything else. All in all, I’m pleased with it. But... it’s very, very light. Which is a good thing, especially with my dodgy shoulder, but it’s lightness is setting off various alarm bells in my head regarding it’s strength. I know people build instruments from paulownia all the time, but it does concern me slightly that it will be able to handle string tension. I have visions of tuning it up and the bridge screws pulling out of the body... BC member Discreet has just built a Jazz with a paulownia body successfully (possibly from the same eBay seller?) and chatting with him has allayed my fears somewhat. So, I’m off to buy some grain filler while I think about which finish I’m going to apply...

Thank you @Andyjr1515 and @Norris. How great is it that I can come on Basschat and get free advice from people who know what they’re talking about.

So first up is the neck. For my first project (because I have many ideas) I decided to assemble a bass from parts as opposed to actually building the body and neck myself from raw wood (although this is something I plan to do in the future). Anyway the first part arrived this week from China (although the speed with which it arrived suggests it’s a Chinese made item stocked in the UK), and I’m very, very impressed with it. The fretwork is beautiful, and the build quality is impressive especially considering that it cost less than £30 delivered (although I may well still get hit for import duty, if it did indeed come from China...) My plan is to try and do the whole build for £150 or thereabouts, although it doesn’t matter if it goes slightly over budget but my intention is to try and build a serviceable, giggable instrument for as little money as possible. Can’t wait to get building!!
