1. This came up on shuffle in the car yesterday. Excellent solo, Don Felder I assume. http://youtu.be/zcuxY8qiBZw
2.
As I said, it may be my lack of experience but the 42mm neck just feels fat to me and my fingers don't fall perfectly where I want them to be. It's not a major issue but is noticeable. I can play may of my 38mm necks without thinking but on the precision I need to think about it for a few minutes before it falls in line. The depth of neck seems far less important. Judging by other threads on here I don't think I am the only one with a preference.
Similarly, I've been a EBMM Stingray player for some time and always loved it's chunky neck. A couple of months ago I acquired a Jazz bass and have played nothing since. Last night at band practise I decided to give the 'Ray a run out and within a few songs my fretting hand was really tired and ached. I hadn't noticed that actually my hand always ached when I played the Stingray but I ignored it and attributed it to technique. The J bass's slimmer neck is so comfortable that I hadn't noticed that it's really easy to play (for me), until I went back to the 'Ray. So for me personally, neck width is important.
3. All this Thunderbird talk has provoked mild GAS. I'm just not 100% sold on the body shape, preferring instead the more rounded outline of the T-bird inspired Schecter Nikki Sixx signature. At £1000+ that's out of the question, so I'm thinking about reshaping an Epiphone Thunderbird body to suit. Has anyone done this, either to a T-bird or any other bass? It'll probably exacerbate the neck dive though...
4.
Never really had a problem with the concept. There's always been guitar and bass heroes but today, I saw the ad for the Robbie Robertson signature Strat. It's £12,000!! It's not as if he's actually a great guitarist or some sort of ground breaking virtuoso. A couple of great songs and the Last Waltz. That's it isn't it? Or have I missed something? Fender must be desperate to simply get a name, any name on a headstock. Wonder how many they'll sell. Rant over, just going to get an hour's practice in on my Angela Merkel jazz 5😎
Isn't the RR Strat dipped in molten bronze? Perhaps at that price it's molten gold?
5.
If we're talking James Dean Bradfield then this is my absolute favourite. http://youtu.be/gavcjNniIvk The solo work throughout the song is just perfectly apropriate to the song. Generation Terrorists was a huge influence on me back in the day. It was like Guns and Roses with intelligent lyrics and far more beautiful vocals.
Yes. I do an acoustic cover of that in my solo set. Amazing song.
6. The amazing James Dean Bradfield of Manic Street Preachers... 2.12 in La Tristesse Durera http://youtu.be/zJzwIFyZfck 2.38 in Further Away http://youtu.be/MLRCPPUgL2Y
7.
Squeeze, Another Nail In The Heart ....masterclass of musicality, not another solo like it anywhere in pop/rock history..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bTWF7eirJw
Yes, great choice. Glenn Tilbrook is a fantastic, overlooked, guitarist.
8.
That J&D bass is great. I had one and sounded fantastic completely stock. I only sold it because I had too many Jazz basses and I am not a fan of slim necks... but I love the Jazz sound so I kept buying them
I picked up a J&D Jazz a few weeks ago and the Stingray hasn't been out if it's case since.
9. I'm constantly pushing my rock covers band to chuck in a curveball, to consistent reluctance. I saw, a couple of years ago, an all male rock covers band not dissimilar to my own in a pub, and out of nowhere they did a heavy version of Katy Percy's 'I Kissed A Girl' which absolutely rocked and went down a storm.
10.
We do Personal Jesus, version is kind of a cross between the Manson one and the Cash one, goes surprisingly well.
We do that too, ours is closer to Depeche Mode's original but with everything a bit heavier.
11. In a half hour solo acoustic set on Friday I had people talking to me four times: 1. 'Play something by Oasis' 2 'Play something Northern' (?) 3. 'Can you announce that the buffet is now open' (unbeknown to me and my fellow performers there was a wake going on in the other bar) 4. 'Can you announce that the buffer is now open in a slower, clearer way so that the drunk ones can understand you' I'm not going to play there again.
12. Take the gig and just look forward to the almighty bender you can go on when the cruise has finished...
13. Just got home from my first solo gig of the year, at a pub in Banbury called The Muskateer. Four acoustic acts, with me on first. I usual only play my own stuff when I play solo but as the venue is very much a family pub I thought I should drop in a few recognisable covers. I played for half an hour; with alternating cover/original. All went well, good reaction, got paid. I really enjoyed it and have a few more solo gigs coming up, working around the band calendar. Good to blow the cobwebs away! Unfortunately though, the pub had double booked. On one side of the pub, us. On the other side of the pub, a wake. Most of the wake attendees were pretty well oiled by the time I played and I was asked to play something by Oasis, a favourite of the deceased apparently. Not knowing any Oasis songs I had to sadly decline. It was fortunate that I learnt about the wake when I did as my next song was going to be The Smiths' There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, with its chorus lyric of dying in a road accident, I thought I should remove it from the set. Next stop for me is back on the bass at the annual, local Bodfest event with the band next weekend. Hope the weather is good!
14.
I think if they want longevity then they might need to think about dropping the bass does guitar routine. I know that's their 'thing' however it's going to sound samey after a while. 1st albums decent but it certainly didn't get played to death on my cd player! If the 2nd album is more of yhe same then I would imagine interest will start dropping pretty quickly! They've got decent songs though so I honestly think they would have more appeal at album 3 if they got a keyboard or guitarist in. The fanboy purists will disagree with me no doubt!
I'm a fan of the band, and of the first album too, but I agree with you. The limitations of their line up dictates that they adapt and augment or risk creative stasis.
15. I used to have a client at work called Dick Standing. My mum used to work with a woman called Jenny Taylor. Recently I did a site visit for work and on arrival was introduced to the project manager, Bob Marley and the fitter, James Brown. Somehow i kept a straight face...
16. One of my favourites... http://youtu.be/tO0Vq4fj3ho James Garner was cool as...
17.
Just the scrambler, I'm looking forward to it arriving. I may have to sell my bass soul food to make room for it on my pedal board. I'll keep you posted on what my opinion of it is.
So what did you think? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts versus the Soul Food.
18.
Hi Paul. Hows the back ? It's not too bad - only hurts when I lift more than about 5kg
Getting better thanks, but still painful. Band practise tomorrow should be interesting...
19. I have no desire whatsoever to go to a big festival.
20. Sorry to hear that a Mark, hope it works itself out.
21. Something for all you Thundercat fans... https://www.bbc.co.uk/events/ec584f/play/p056f6ty/p056vfmk?ns_mchannel=social&ns_campaign=bbc_radio_6_music&ns_source=facebook&ns_linkname=radio_and_music
22.
It could well be the same one. When watching on Netflix it seemed to end prematurely - credits rolling etc - then after a few seconds with a blank screen "part 2" began. It was all formatted as one long stream though.
I started watching this last night actually, really enjoying it. Eagles were my dad's favourite band when I was a kid in the '70s so their music soundtracked my childhood. I managed to get to the two hour point at about 1am this morning, just the one to go now ☺
23. I want to rewire my Jazz copy so that the neck pickup volume control becomes a master volume control, the bridge pickup control becomes a blend between the two pickups and the tone control remains a tone control. For a soldering / bass wiring novice is this a relatively do-able exercise, or am I asking for trouble and better off entrusting the task to someone who actually knows what they're doing?
24. Graham Lyle of Gallagher and Lyle. Possibly my first sighting of a 4001 was the cover of their Breakaway album which my parents loved when I was a kid. Tasty basslines too.
