Buying a carbon bow--advice needed please
BaconCheese replied to gypsyjazzer's topic in EUB and Double Bass
On the cheap bows, the hair is rubbish anyway. Gage/Coda bows are good if you are willing to spend some more... I would advise to go with bleached hair for most occasions. I am sure this is a good deal, too. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/296933-col-legno-carbon-fibre-french-bow/page__pid__3194968#entry3194968 -
The best sounding Fodera I have ever owned. Very sweet mid spectrum, quick response, long sustain, fantastic Low B, great for soloing with E-C tuning. It has a very classy, buttery tone, much like Janek Gwizdalas tone. Bought new from Station Music, 100% original condition. Comes with a Fodera teardrop case. Mahogany body 3-piece maple neck Macassar ebony fretboard Fodera 3-Band EQ Walnut Top and matching headstock 4,7kg https://goo.gl/photo...RXUfvLvSEPHwTs5 Just as a reference for current pricing: http://www.station-m...Products%2F6552 Potential trades: -33" scale five string with narrow spacing (Matt Garrison Signature)

Playing the db like a cello (tuned in fifths, four independent fingers) is not for everybody. Most players who choose that path use a bass with a string length of ~100cm. If you are playing "regular" Jazz/Latin stuff, all this was played on basses tuned in 4th, the same goes for the vast amount of orchestral literature. Playing a standard size 3/4 bass with a string lenght of ~105cm, 4-finger technique is very exhausting- in many cases, you would have to do a bit of shifting anyway, because going from the index to the 4th finger is more than the range of your hand. This has nothing to do with Simandl, really. It is about playing with less tension and effort. So for most db players, 3-finger technique is the way to go. If you got the pivot down, which is not hard to do, you basically have all the range you need. Also, you can use the thump position fingering anywhere on the fretboard whenever needed.

Wonderful bass, part of a factory special run, only 144 were ever made. 132 were sold in North America, so these are very rare in Europe. 100% original condition. Set up beautifully, straight neck, low action. http://www.rainbowgu...e/0250660505/fe https://goo.gl/photo...ucEcQPsFXzpYun9 Asking £840/950€, based in Germany. Price includes shipping and a hard case (the bass was originally sold without a case, so this is an added bonus). I am looking for a straight sale, only exception could be a Zon bass (with cash your way). There was a question concerning the colour of the bass. The bass is finished in an aged olympic white, best seen on the pic of the headstock. Most of the pics make the bass seem to be a bright olympic white but it is actually all around an aged olympic white. Please refer to the webpage linked above (rainbowguitars.com) for more accurate pictures of the actual colour of the bass.

It all depends on what the band sounds like and where the bass should fit in the mix. There is a reason for choosing a P or J, and it is no coincidence that they are chosen in certain settings. If you have a big sounding drum kit, especially the bass drum, you have to figure out where the bass sits in the mix. The majority of players in these Rock bands tend to play P basses- they blend very well with heavy (Les Paul) guitars and a with the fat bass drum. It also fits best if you are playing along with the bass drum a lot or if you are laying down a very straight groove. A P with a maple board and ash body adds more high mids and treble to the mix than an alder/rosewood P. With a J, you are more likely to clash with a distorted Les Paul sound, but it fits beautifully to a Fender guitar sound and more "old school" drums with a more natural sounding bass drum. The J may also sound better if you are playing busy lines, because the sound is way clearer, especially if you rely on the bridge pickup.
I've just put a set last week. Enjoying the strings, they are easy to get around on and the tone is very nice. I've only had steel core up to now. Last set were Jazzer and they were great but wanted to see what other's were digging. Evah' have not settled yet, still dropping tuning. Is that usual for synthetic core strings?
That is to be expected. Evahs sound great- most Jazz players have switched to Evah weich since they came out. The mittel are better for bowing/orchestral work, but the weich are a decent hybrid string. One thing I dont really like is that they tend to loose a lot of sound and brightness fairly quickly. And since they do have a "mild" sound to begin with, they dont last very long. If you are not about bowing, you could also try Velvet Blue for a brighter sound and excellent playability or Presto Jazzicato Tungsten, which are very nice for pizz. Some even like them for bowing, but they play very differently than typical arco steings like Flexocor or Belcanto.

I am selling the following instruments because of a permanent switch to upright and fretless bass. All the basses are well taken care of and in original condition. I am happy to answer any questions you might have. I am not considering any trades at this point. The only exception are 4- and 5-string Zon fretless basses from 2010 or later. My main fretless bass is a lovely VB-4 Zon and I might consider something similar as a possible trade. The basses are priced to sell, so I will not be open to offers. I have advertised the basses in €, because I dont want to change the price every other day because of changes in the exchange rate. Anyway, please have a look at my humble collection and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Fodera Victor Wooten, custom order, 35", made in 2005 Stunning Quilted Maple Top, Mahogany Body, 3-piece Maple Neck. True piano string tone, fantastic sustain and wonderful clarity. Suitable for any gig- it does the modern Jazz/Fusion thing really well, but it is also a beast in the recording studio or in any setting, really. Very low acttion, a joy to play. https://goo.gl/photo...YRWB7GfF4L3bcJA Fodera Anthony Jackson Presentation, 35", 5-string custom order A very special bass. Walnut Burl Top, hand carved quite beautifully, 5-piece Ash Neck, Swamp Ash Body Wings with Maple Tone Block. The bass has a wonderful smoothness and depth to the tone. It sounds very even across all strings. It really makes you smile when you play it- it does respond well to what you are putting into it, but it also enhances the tone in a subtle and very classy way. Surprisingly light for a Fodera 5-string.
