  1. Unless your bass was set up properly before purchase, it is likely that it came with "shipping" strings, which are typically only suitable for building a fence. This is a standard procedure for Chinese basses, and most any stringed instrument.
  2. Don't cheap out on the drivers. Dave Greenboy chose the Kappalites for a reason, and he designed the cab specifically to suit those drivers. Any other driver will not give the same results. Also, use only the crossover from Speaker Hardware that is specified. These crossovers have been designed to handle a lot of power and give a very smooth transition. I built a fEARful 12/6 exactly to spec, and it's the most amazing sounding cab I have ever played through, and I've been through a LOT of cabs. If you cheap out, you will regret it.
  3. I want to give a big heads-up to Deuce Bridges. For years I put up with uneven string performance, regardless of what strings I used. Tried the soundpost in all sorts of positions, and I had adjusters so I tried all manner of string heights. I fitted a D2 Deuce Bridge, and voila! There it was... strings totally even both in tension and volume! Then I noticed that acoustically it was louder and punchier. My main band rehearses acoustically, and my band mates all commented how much clearer and easier to hear it was. I guess it wont suit purists because of its appearance, but I reckon it's the best thing since way before sliced bread!
  4. I've had a Trace rig in the past. My current D class GK MB800 runs rings around it for power and tone.
  5. A few players have mentioned clarity. This One10 cab is the first cab I've ever owned in 35+ years of playing that I can sit on the floor and hear myself perfectly (kind of important for a double bass player! ). I just played an outdoor gig with it, several hundred punters, and the soundman told me to turn down so he could put me in FOH. I was running the gain at 9 o'clock and master at 11 o'clock.... just coasting really. And that with one 10" speaker!
  6. Great to see the love for Barefaced. I can't comprehend the old "I can't afford it" wail though. I live in New Zealand, so I not only have hefty freight, but also Goods and Service Tax, customs entry tax, various other little charges, and the GST on all of those too. However, the benefits of the Barefaced are worth every bit of it. I can't wait to get my second one! Incidentally, the cab I sold to finance the second one was a Greenboy fEARful 12/6, a wonderous cab, but the weight was a bit much for my crumbling vertebrae.
  7. Just wanted to give a shout out for Barefaced cabs. I mostly play double bass, and run a GK MB800 head into a high quality "other brand" cab. The damage to my back means light weight is my catch cry , so I bought a Barefaced One10 cab. Perfect! Light, well built, loud, great tone, can hear myself on stage easily. So good in fact I sold my other cab and have ordered another One10 to give me a modular rig. How much money would I have saved over the decades if I'd had this gear back then?
  8. Thank you.
  9. I have a GK MB800 with a Barefaced One10 which will shortly be supplemented by another One10. It is the lightest and best sounding rig I've owned in 35 years of playing.
  10. Just to expand this topic, I have a very substantial end pin with a screw-in rubber tip. Over the years the rubber has worn off the end, leaving the steel exposed. I have looked through the web sites of the usual suspects to no avail, so I have glued a little piece of rubber to the exposed steel, but I don't expect it to last.
  11. Just shows.... horses for courses. I have a Barefaced One10, and I love it so much I'm going to get another. I run a P bass with flats and an upright through my GK MB800 into the Barefaced, and seldom have to touch the eq. I usually leave the tone section flat at 12 o'clock, and that's it. As with Marc S, I struggled to hear my PJB on stage when sat on the floor. The Barefaced sat flat on the floor enables me to hear myself perfectly. What the difference between the two is, I don't know. I'm going to get another little Barefaced for big gigs so I don't have to lug my "other brand" cab around. This is all my opinion, and matters little in the grand scheme of the universe...
  12. I had a flightcase (150w) and a matching powered ext cab (250w), total of 10 5" speakers. The tone was to die for, but as someone said in an earlier post, it didn't have enough oomph for a trio unless I pushed it pretty hard. I don't play loud, my tinnitus wont stand it.
  13. What dealers are mostly selling is of little importance. Flavour of the month etc, etc. What sounds best to you is best for you. Because I work in the industry, I have played most brands and models, and GK does it for me, also Phil Jones Bass (PJB) and Walter Woods. Why? Because I can get a great sound with no preamp and with tone knobs set flat at 12 o'clock. Eden, SWR, Trace, Ampeg, Ashdown, Fender, Peavey, all capable of great sounds but with a lot of knob-twiddling, and some definitely required a preamp. EBS I have no experience of, likewise TC. All this is just what works for me. BTW, I mainly play upright bass.
