The Big Fat South-West Bass Bash - Now Sunday 19th September 2021
JohnDaBass replied to scrumpymike's topic in Events
Is someone going to post a review of the bass cab shoot out at this year's Bash? @Phil Starr -
These look great, I did not know that Korg acquired Aguilar, it makes so much sense for each branch to collaborate to combine the knowhow and expertise. The humbucking Alnico 5 Pups sound fantastic.

I see Warwick are releasing Gnome cabs for their Gnome amps. https://bassmagazine.com/gear/warwick-unveils-new-gnome-compact-series-bass-cabinets https://www.musicinstrumentnews.co.uk/2021/09/16/warwick-gnome-compact-bass-cabinets/ I wonder if we shall see Ashdown ANT cabs next?

It is worth considering upgrading the PUP to retain the vintage '51 tone and hum cancelling. I have used PUPs from Jess Loureiro and Lindy Fralin. Jess Loureiro Hand Wound Pickups (jlguitars.com) Fralin Pickups - Boutique, Hand-Made Guitar and Bass Pickups The Jess Loureiro is very authentic but with added versatility. It offers a range of tones from typical '51 P to '62 P. It is 4 wire so can be wired in series or parallel or with a simple switch you have the option of both. The Lindy Fralin Split '51 is virtually identical to the original Fender '51 P (with raised pole pieces) but with extra clarity. I purchased the PUP that was "5% over wound" and it is fantastic. Both the above are hand wound and need to be paired with a tone cap value that suits your desired taste but @KiOgon will be able to help with the right loom and cap value.

Nice job, looks fantastic and I'm sure it sounds as good as it looks. Would you be kind enough to share details on pre-amp and MM Pup?
-
Thanks Al, I believe G&B Pups are also used in PRS and Reverend basses. So they must be highly regarded.

Are Pups Roswell?

Forgot to say that I believe the 2x10 cab has the magnetic holder & foot recesses to match your Fender Rumble head. So the amp stays safely on the cab, virtually a Rumble 500 Combo.
-
I understand that the Fender Rumble cabs & combos ( not the amp part) are outsourced to Eminence who design & manufacture at their plant in China. Eminence work to Fenders cosmetic and headline specifications and do the rest, design the cab, select the speakers, make the speakers and source other components. Eminence ODM & OEM for other major brands in the same Eminence factory. I have had a Rumble 500 head and a Fender 1x12 V2 cab ( made by Fender in Mexico with Eminence Neo speaker) for some years and both have served me well in different bands I also now have a Rumble 800HD and I am pleased with the flexibility the amps offer. I know there isn't a lot of commentary on here for Fender Rumble amps and cabs but Fender is not going to harm their brand by putting their name on something that performs poorly. I am sure you won't be disappointed with a Fender Rumble 2x10 cab, after all the Rumble 500 Combo does seem to enjoy some love on here.

A shortscale Rickenbacker 4001 - yes, it exists

So why doesn't Rickenbacker wake up to the opportunity of brand extension into a desirable 30ins or 32ins 4001. -

As I live and breathe that is a work of beauty. A fine product to satisfy an individual need. Outstanding. Love it. Enjoy.

Nope, just an eye for detail and paying attention to those small essentials.

Absolutely love your cabling attention to detail, quite superb.

Oh my word that is beautiful, just hope there's no neck dive. -
+1 And ensure that you have 90 degree joints. The benefit of the battens is two fold, good 90 degree strong joints and additional strength for fixing feet screws into thin wall cabs. I'm confident that Phil has built quite a number of cabs so we avoid going through the same "learning curve" that Phil has experienced.

Aside from the Spector branded official cases what suggestions do Spector owners have for a value for money case for a 35" scale Legend 5 Classic and Legend 4 TN?

I built a 10ins combo cab with the speaker cab dimensions were similar to your target sizes. I used a Celestion neo 10" 300w 8ohm driver with no tweeter and tuned the cab to 50Hz. It sounds really good and compares quite favourably to my BF One10 which I subsequently sold. The combo cab had less coloration than the BF One10 but could match that Old School tone with some amp EQ settings. I think my contribution is around page 6 or 7 of the thread. I have previously used Beyma 12s in two Basschat builds I am sure those 10s you have will turn out fine. Good luck with your build.

So here's another that's joined the party. https://www.notreble.com/buzz/2021/08/06/phil-jones-bass-unveils-the-bp-200-bass-head/ I have a sneaky belief that all these 200W amps are produced by the same Far Eastern ODM and the brands are simply badge engineering the same platform. Sad really that the big corporate organisations are recycling a generic design instead of investing and developing at least their own front ends. Seems sustainable competitive advantage has been out sourced.

So spent some time this morning A/B my latest acquisitions, a Spector Legend 4 TN and a Legend 5 Classic. The 4 TN has Aguilar DCB G3 Pups and Aguilar OBP-2 pre and the 5 Classic has Tone Pump Jr & Bartolini Pups. Using the stock strings and Zoom B1 Four into Fender Rumble 500 and Fender 1x12 cab. First observation was the higher output gain of the Tone Pump Jr over the OBP-2 there is quite a substantial step in output. The DCB G3 are much more polite than the Barts. Both are very clean & articulate, but the Barts just seem to have a bit more Grunt. The centre detent on the bass & treble controls of the OBP-2 is a welcome help to finding your starting point. The variety of tones from both basses is vast and offers a range that should appeal to a broad church of bassists. My initial conclusions are that I prefer the Tone Pump Jr & Bartolini Pups of the 5 Classic but the slinky fast neck of the 4 TN is an absolute dream to play for a 4 string. I wonder what a proper adult Tone Pump pre and EMGs would sound like in upgrading the 4 TN?????? Perhaps a project for next year???
