They both sound like a dull SS amp through a generic 15" cab in an acoustically bad room, but I voted number 2.

We set up amps and PA in a friends back garden for his birthday, and also once played in a Conservative members club and got a lifetime ban

I use a £10 Behringer SM58 rip-off

Assuming your cabs are both 8ohm you can go with your proposed method or run both cables from the back of the amp to each cab - either way ends up the same. With the latter option though one cab will alwys be connected if a cable fails.

It's a good idea to take a picture of the insides before you start so you have a guide where everything goes back (just in case)

Desolder, resolder, done.

I use this odd tuning, "EADG" or something...

I have this "wide" version too, I think they must have had surplus heads originally destined to be fitted into a combo. It is too wide to be rack mounted.
