2. My bass sits on my right hip and doesn't contact with said belt.
  3. Bought an Ashdown ABM head from Linus27. Well packaged, quick delivery, all as described, thanks very much
  4.
Of course not. But before building my first cab I spent a month in my college library researching how speakers work, and the first few cabs I built were pre-existing designs from acknowledged experts in the field. So, while not perfect by any means, they still worked better than off the shelf. The questions being posed by the OP may seem innocuous enough to the average reader, but they're akin to going to a DIY aircraft forum and asking 'why do I need a wing?'.
It seems to me like the OP has done a lot of research, but still has a few questions. I would expect a civilised response, especially from one of the experts on here.
  5. Sand the entire thing by hand. Nitromors is horrible stuff and doesn't work very well IME, especially if you're leaving it natural.
  6.
Which goes to why everyone who does know how speakers work in this and other forums have told you that you should not be trying to design your own cab.
Bit harsh. I suppose all your cabs were perfect first time?
  7. Try to learn the more difficult songs by those artists Open mic/jam nights/a band?! - playing with other musicians teaches you a lot IMO For improv, make up your own basslines to "easy" songs. For example a lot of Blink 182 is mainly straight root notes - try building more interesting lines to them

    Gone

Four string set of Webstrings stainless steel taken off a full scale 4-a-side bass Five string set - I think 3 are from the same set + 2 odds. All Gone
  9.
an old mate of mines tnt broke...
Theres one at our old practice space that has been piss-wet through in a flood, run over by a transit and generally abused for nearly 10 years still works (almost) perfectly.
  10.
A bass amp should be 3 times the power of the guitar amps on stage (I think)
I think that's a general guide if playing minus PA. If PA monitored you should be OK, but this removes the need for a bass amp in the first place And that Peavey TNT is bombproof. It might not sound the best but not even a nuclear strike can break it
  11.
sorry to side track but what does AFAIK mean?
As far as I know
  12.
i was thinking of changing it but think i will put up with the weight issue
I had minor problem of fitting it in the car
  13.
The wet burlap sack probably had an Ashdown badge
No, it definitely looked like a retarded wasp.
  14.
If a bulk order was going ahead, I'd like to try the following - 1 x Medium Flatwounds 1 x Medium Stainless Roundwounds Maybe we should get a potential order list put together on the thread?
Will do, are they 4 string sets?
  15.
Not found any yet
Touche, I would like to hear a Markbass that doesn't sound like someone shouting through a wet burlap sack.
  16.
You didnt, I was misquoting you but would still love to know what the "higher end" Ashdown stuff sounds like
Go out and play some "higher end" Ashdown stuff then
  17.
And? that makes it better? How is the "high end Ashdown stuff better than Markbass"?
How is Markbass better than Ashdown, except it works after you left it out in the rain. WTG. Fact: Kirk Douglas played an Ashdown, beat that.
  18.
How is the "high end Ashdown stuff better than Markbass"?
And where did I say that?
  19.
But how does it weigh up to Markbass gear? Do you have experience of that as well? I would hope that if youre giving a comparitive opinoin then youd have had experience of both and would be capable of giving a qualitive assessment.
"I do wonder if the higher end ashdown stuff is better though" "Yes it is" I'm not making a comparitive opinion, just a comment that higher end Ashdown is better than their cheaper ranges.
  20.
But how does it weigh up to Markbass gear?
It's heavier.
  21.
Which bits of higher end Ashdown?
From experience UK ABM and Classic, not tried the US series.
  22.
I've got a Mark Bass combo now and I can't fault it, stood up to everything thrown at it so far, I can't praise them enough. I do wonder if the higher end ashdown stuff is better though.
Yes it is.
  23.
Anyway, I actually made a mistake about the crossover. It's actually a 4th order Butterworth filter centered at 1000Hz.
This doesn't really matter because the driver impedances are not ideal to get a usable speaker configuration below 12ohms. Personally I would look for 16ohm woofers or a 4ohm midrange or use a 2-way crossover.
