Dont think there are many decent octave up pedals available are there? The Micro Pog is one of the best I've tried for tracking and tone. What cheaper alternatives would you suggest?
I don't know of any cheaper alternatives, but personally I would spend just that bit more on the full POG.
1. There's a point of view (one of many of course) that bass rigs should perhaps be closer in design to PA and maybe even hifi than, say, guitar cabs. Using a 10" driver next to a 15" driver to driven with the same signal can result in the overall result being far from that, e.g. they are likely to have different sensitivities at the same frequencies and different dispersion characteristics. There's more to a driver than frequency response. 2. I mean that the results some people get from using a mixture of cabs with differing driver sizes suits them, i.e. it produces a sound they are happy with which is fine. I'm not trying to tell anyone to not mix cabs - I'm just of the school of thought that if you like the result then that's great but that the apparently commonly accepted notion that the best mix is a 1 X 15" and a 2 X 10" is probably a lot more hit and miss (just sort of looks right maybe?) than following a slightly more scientific approach. Not everyone has been wowed by a a 1 x 15" and 2 x 10" stack or whatever. 3. I'm not talking about using the same cabinet and fitting it with differing driver sizes - a cabinet and driver choice(s) are inextricably linked - I'm referring to using a mixture of cabs in one stack without crossovers - e.g. one cab loaded with 10" drivers and another with 15" drivers. There are some 10" loaded cabs out there with far better low end than some 15" loaded cabs. I've got a pair of subs loaded with 10" drivers - their response is far deeper than some 15" loaded cabs because the enclosures are tuned that way. It's not an absolute given that a 15" loaded cab will have a better low end than one loaded with 10s.
Fair enough. I don't use 15's because I prefer the punchier sound of 10's and a 410 cab provides more than enough bass for my liking. I used to own an Ashdown MAG115 and on it's own there was no volume or clarity.

Two - main bass and a backup.
The old debate is about to open up on mixing cabs with differing driver sizes (without crossovers)! I'll be brave and attempt to precis the discussion: 1. The science says it's not good to mix driver sizes without using crossovers to split the frequencies they handle. The results of mixing drivers sizes are unpredictable. 2. The results may be satisfactory to but more by luck than judgement. 3. Cabs loaded with, say, 15" drivers, do not necessarily handle lower frequencies better than those with smaller, say 10" drivers. (This is my experience too having had a 15" Ashdown cab and now having a BFM Omni 10). Take from that what you wish!
1. And if the frequency responses are extremely close? (quite likely with the majority of bass woofers) 2. Eh? 3. Agreed but your example is not a fair comparison considering the type of cabinets. If you (theoretically) swap the speakers and have an Ashdown single 10" cab and a BFM Omni 15, the 15" will have better low freq response. The only way to fairly judge this is to use the same cabinet for both speakers, in which case the 15" will win 99% of the time.

IMO for Marcus Miller money you may as well buy a jazz bass that looks good (no stupid scratchplate covering half the body) and upgrade it similar to MM spec. The BAII does cock-all more than a standard bridge (apart from fill up some of the empty space on the body) anyway, and you can stick one of the millions of 2 band preamps in. Easy.

Loud metal band in a Conservative club = Police and eviction from venue. Playing outdoors as it starts to get cloudy on a summer afternoon = shitting yourself that your gear will be subject to a sudden monsoon

Latest setup: IN ─ SansAmp Bass Driver DI ─ EHX Octave Multiplexer ─ Boss CEB-3 Bass Chorus ─ Boss ODB-3 Bass Overdrive ─ Toadworks Mr. Squishy ─ OUT

Not. The Squire has big fender-style tuners with 3/4" holes and 4 screws holding them on. The Gotoh ones are 17mm holes IIRC and are held by 1 screw. Weightwise, the Gotohs will be lighter.

I've always been a fan of that shape. Very nice
Oh I've heard and used plenty Ashdown kit - it's a bit like marmite on this forum. love it or hate it . Nowt in between
Yeah I know

Come on, someone must want these?
I believe you'll find (if you do some surfing) that most speaker manufacturers now will offer their cabinets in both 4 and 8 ohms. Even eden have got of ftheir high horse and produce a 4 ohm 410XST. From my reading today I've so far only found Trace elliot not providing a 4 ohm. Haven't checked the likes of ashdown yet - I've only been looking at kit that sounds good
Saved you the trouble of looking at kit that doesn't sound good, nevermind you actually hearing any of it Classic range: 4 and 8 ohm Current ABM: 8 ohm only (there is an older 4 ohm version though) MAG: 8 ohm only US: 4 and 8 ohm

Never any problems except the odd bashed cardboard packet (probably caused by RM)

"I found it difficult to find a bass that packed enough punch, with good playability and most importantly one that was good value for money. The V4 has this in spades" Is this a direct quote? Nice one
Scouse accents. I'm so surprised.
Yes, every Scouser is a skinhead yob. And violent crime doesn't occur anywhere outside Liverpool.

I've used sandpaper and managed it in a few hours using a 40 grit to start with.

Have you ever considered courier work? -
Bass DI'd is naff anyway! Doesn't it go something like this....DI your bass and let the sound guy worry about it?
No, because I can set the EQ going out of the DI
-
OK you might be running at full power but if the speaker can't handle the excursion it's wasted anyway. I'd try looking for a more efficient driver (at least 100dB) with a higher Xmax regardless whether its 4ohm or 8ohm.

Post your pictures, Lets see what you all look like.

I take it you bought a different Vampyre then? -
I might add acoustic damping and wonder where to apply it and what extra benefits I should expect ?
Everywhere on the inside walls of the cab, but avoid it touching the speaker chassis and don't obstruct any ports. It should help prevent standing waves inside the box.
Nothing to stop you still taking both cabs, just plug the second one in. ;-) Some pro's do this. In fact, you can go even further and take the drivers out of the unused cab to make it lighter
I think this is meant to say "just don't plug the second one in"

The cab will be fine, though you might want to put some acoustic damping inside.
If only the Ampeg had been 8ohm I would be pushing one hell of a lot of air at my next gig - very very loud indeed, deaf audience, 5 x10's and a 15 ! lol ! Although from what you have been saying and what ive been reading, I should a hefty sound at 4ohms from the 4x10 on its own anyway, no power going anywhere else but into one cab... look forward to it.
Hell yeah, I must be only be running around 150-180W through my 4x10 since it's 8ohm and that shifts some. Just don't use up all the juice with the bass control, utilise the low mids more. I find there's a lot more headroom available doing this
