Video: 'When Expensive Music Gear Becomes Obsolete'
AinsleyWalker replied to AinsleyWalker's topic in Effects
If you're still able to use it then I don't think it counts as obsolete. In the video, he gives an example of a Mackie interface that relied on a connection that became defunct, and Mackie stopped providing support for the product, so it became a brick. -
An interesting video on gear obsolescence and what we can all do to avoid falling into the trap of buying gear designed to become obsolete / unusable. One particular quote (paraphrased): "So what can we do to avoid despair of musical equipment becoming obsolete bricks? One is, buy pedals that don’t require a computer hookup." I've always felt this way, and only tolerated computer hookup with ONE pedal: my Future Impact v1 synth. This is purely because while I loved what it could do, it seemed to lack that many simple useable 'synth-bass' sounds straight out of the box and half of its capability is inaccessible without a computer and access to the patch database. I half worry that one day I will lose my 99 custom patches due to memory failure or lose the ability to hook it up to a computer, rendering it closer to a toy than musical gear. Since buying it back in 2019, I've bought zero pedals that require computer hookup.

Ibanez Pentatone PTEQ 5-Band Parametric Equalizer Pedal
AinsleyWalker replied to dave_bass5's topic in Effects
Probably because more and more people are going ampless/direct and any on-stage amp is really just performing the role of a monitor so you can hear yourself, and at best it's a clean pedal platform. As a result, twiddling with amps settings isn't going to affect sound going to FOH/the audience, unless you use your amp's built-in DI which most venues won't do. So it makes sense that a lot of modern players are focusing more on compact, travel-friendly tone-shaping options. -

*SOLD* Moving on my Micro Thumpinator due to other expenses. If you aren't familiar, it removes the ultra-low frequencies that can cause a lot of strain on amps, helping your sound stay tighter even at louder volumes. It's in great condition and fully working. It has some high-quality Velcro on the underside, I can remove this if you would prefer. Cut-off frequency: ~25Hz. Price includes UK postage. Official description: "The micro-Thumpinator is a bandwidth optimizer designed for bass guitar. It removes the low frequency signals that are outside the range of notes produced by the instrument. Infrasonic frequencies cannot be reproduced by standard bass cabinets but they often make amplifiers clip, especially when they are set to boost the lower frequencies. The Thumpinator filters the signal content optimising the energy delivered by the amplifier. Low-frequency clip is substantially reduced and the sound is tighter especially at high volume levels. The micro-Thumpinator accepts instrument and line level signals. It can be used between preamplifier and amplifier, between bass and amplifier or anywhere in the effect chain (line or instrument level). It can also be connected directly to an audio interface."

Post your pedal board - Basschat style!!

After a lot of recent rejigging, this is my current 'at home'/having fun/do-it-all board. I would probably use less than half of this in most situations. Bass > Peterson Strobostomp tuner > Origin Cali 76 Compact Bass compressor > Boss OC2 > Future Impact synth > Mu-Tron envelope filter > Hamstead Subspace drive > Blue Colander Tremond distortion > Moog MF Chorus > Chase Bliss Dark World reverb > Micro Thumpinator hi-pass (under board) > Aguilar Tone Hammer preamp > -

Replacing pedal footswitches with toggle switches
AinsleyWalker replied to AinsleyWalker's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thanks for the feedback! One of the under screws has gotten stuck so I'll need to work on getting that out before I can really take a good look inside at the wiring etc. -
Replacing pedal footswitches with toggle switches

That's something I hadn't considered, so thanks for the heads up. I've done very little research into parts at this stage, but I'll look into different types of switches to see if anything is a similar size. -
Replacing pedal footswitches with toggle switches

That makes sense - would there be a big downside to replacing 3pdt with 4pdt? I'm not seeing 3pdt toggle switches on many retailers. -
Hey, I know this is possible to do, but I just wondered if anyone had done this themselves and could advise? I use a Tone Hammer as a handy phantom-powered desktop DI/preamp, and would like to switch out the footswitches (one to engage the unit, one to engage the AGS) for toggle switches to make it more of a desktop unit. I know plenty of people who could advise/do this type of mod for me, but I'm looking to learn more about components and modding so thought i'd reach out here first. I think I would need a 3PDT/4PDT toggle switch like the one below? I'm not sure if SPDT or DPDT would do the job. Any advice is appreciated, thanks! Great preamp/DI, excellent for clean tone shaping or using the AGS to add a bit of warmth. Bought very recently in current condition, just not getting much use. No box but will be packaged securely, there are a few small scuffs/marks which I've highlighted in the photos, such as to the white part of the Gain knob, but otherwise in very good condition/very clean. Can post at buyer's expense. Message me if you have any questions.

You'd think people would grow up by the time they reach your sort of age.... Singers are a different breed, I suppose...

Walrus Audio Canvas Mono passive DI/LI box - *SOLD*
AinsleyWalker posted a topic in Effects For Sale
Walrus Audio Canvas Mono passive DI/LI box £120 inc UK postage. Comes with original box, bag, etc. Great little compact passive DI/LI box with switchable Pad, Ground Lift, and Summing options. Bought new very recently, fully working, never gigged, used once or twice at home but in mint condition - no damage, marks, etc. I've added two strips of Velcro underneath, but these can be removed cleanly. Only up for sale as it's not getting used at the moment.
