I disagree, regarding covers bands most have their own pa and would/should have the appropriate kit, this topic concerns your typical multi band show be they covers or original bands imo?

So do you pull out of a gig if the pa has behringer wedges rather than db ones JTUK? Or do you not take the booking unless they supply you with the sound crew's number before hand? If the organiser hasn't even decided which company to give the job to that could be difficult.

Turn up and do my best with what I'm given, if it's a crap fest we don't go back next time.

Even if the venue tell you what wedges they have a cheaper non screwed one is better than a top end one that is ruined and full of beer anyway.

If you were near the front you would hear vocals too, until we can get a di from the musicians brains they will need to make some noises!

I can see a time where the big names start endorsing iem systems and di boxes rather than cabs. The younger players are embracing technology and they are the next batch of purchasers, the dinosaurs won't be here for ever deafening themselves.

Silent gigs are already there where the audience all where head phones, imagine a group of kids that could wear head phones plugged into their phone with an app that mixes them all together via wifi including fx etc and recording capability compared to setting up a load of expensive heavy kit their parents have to drive around!

Exactly. I discussed the idea of having a black star cloth the width of the stage with an Ampeg stack sewn onto it with some red power leds for effect!

But the signal can be processed with much more expensive eq kit than we tend to have in our amps, by the time it hits the monitors the flub and wasted power that we feed our bass cabs can be removed giving a monster bass tone right in your face.

The world is moving on, wireless in ears or a high end stage monitor and pro quality pa speakers at pub band money available so there is no reason why you need a cab really.

I played the Robin in bilston a while ago, best bass sound ever in my monitor, far better than the £2000 worth of my rig that wad barely doing anything behind me. My old function band had an EV pa, the tops and bins could pump out much more smooth fat bass than a backline bass amp even with a 8x10.

I've seen people arsing around with some cheap Laney cabs or similar when there was an active RCF £1300 monitor right in front of them, only the best of the best cabs could match that.

Because they use much better quality speakers!

Most bass player obsess over their £500 bass cabs yet the wedge infront of them is often far superior, a di box is all that is needed if there is a proper pa!

What if the band uses music stands, charge more or not at all?

Good luck, I think 6-8 would be seen as fairly low and a cheaper bass might need the extra height to get some thump going. Some rockabillies wouldn't get a tune out of it lower than 14mm, lol.

String type and tension will alter things too, I think 8-10 will be a good starting point to cover various styles of music.

Afaik when people say they have "an 8-10mm" action this is 8mm on the G RISING to 10mm on the E, not lower on the E side.

Edit to say "mine is about 8-10mm" lol.
