1. I've always found open strings are the key to quick passing ghost notes..can b pretty effective.
2. A RW s/b P body from The Stratosphere. Ultra light and rang like a bell....gave it a way on Ebay a couple of yrs ago .....what was I thinking. (If the buyer is on here and still has it etc...) Cheers
3. any chance we could have the weight plse.
4. .......until he stops playing..
5. Hard in a way to admit this but I played a black maple pre EB Stingray for years that was heavy and which I could never get a great tone out of. Was very happy to see the back of it.
6. Well I did say it was a bit silly etc..but you cant knock the musicianship and the crisp production and those manic octaves are very nicely played.
7. Title says it all really. Bit of disco sillyness. Just when you think you've heard every example of bass cleverness the world has to offer, this piece of octave madness comes along to stir up the memory banks. Who's the bassist on this track and is he on BC I wonder. Those soaring octave runs are mighty impressive even all these years later. 8. My Squier VM P/J. Played a vintage P and Stingray for years but they both became way too heavy.....the VM is wonderfully light and I swear it sounds just as good.
9. All good comments but for me its the P cause with flats on I like the way it responds to a careful touch.....thick, tight and middly....perfect.
10. I was 16 and started with a knackered Columbus jazz thru an old hi-fi amp and a box with a 12" bass speaker in it which kinda worked cause if I used the bridge PU and the bass turned down all was well, and then I saw an HH 100watt 15" combo in the local "classical" music store...but that's another thread entirely.
11. what does it weigh?
12.
Some absolute classic basslines on this thread - when I have more time I'm going to come back and [s]steal[/s]...err "rejuvenate" some of these riffs. I think everytime somebody claims to be bored with playing Bass we re-direct them to this thread.
Absolutely then they play this little cracker too.... https://youtu.be/1ZZQuj6htF4
13. Just had another read. Am I right in thinking the only bass not mentioned much if at all is the Precision Bass?.
14. Whats ur skill set? This happened to me a few years ago when I realised that being unable to read music was seriously damaging my mojo. I'm still learning but understanding the dots has given my interest a whopping new lease of life so much so that I now find I cant go more than a few hours without playing something.
15. It hurts to admit it cause I had a fantastic lightweight RW Jazz once but yep,..Jazz basses. Nothing bout them seems right to me..ergonomics, sound, feel etc etc....pity, cause so many top players seem to use them.
16. Yes, absolutely. U can programme a bass line on a computer but I reckon it'll be light years before a computer can play that line with all the nuances of the fingers...scuffing, ghosting..flicking etc etc... which after all are the types of things that make enjoyable music more than just a collection of notes.
17.
Sorry that was hilarious
Agree..nearly fell of the chair, very funny. But it is interesting who can and who cant. Put Mrs O on a dance floor and boy has she got some neat little moves..not all flailing about but kinda small, crisp with the odd twirl and bang on time. But try to get her to clap or stamp her foot to the music or keep a one note groove on my bass ..not a chance..... Weird.
18. Prince Consort Club, Ryde IOW 1978 Im 18. Junk shop Columbus Jazz going through, and here's the best bit...the main acts Orange 2x15 bin and 120 head. Our lead singer, lovely girl disappears and comes back with us ready to go in fishnets, her blokes white shirt and not much else!....gawd..didnt know where to look..ha Denni Denni, Rezillos etc etc...it was terrifyng with the crowd stood 3" away and I was so nervous I could barely play a right note .....happy days.
19. Lovely, if only. Biggest gear mistake I ever made....ever is flipping a new v lightweight RW P body which I imported from The Stratosphere guys .....have looked back through my Ebay account but the details have gone....oh the pain. What was I bloody thinking. GLWTS.
20. The band will probably enjoy a drink or two, or three, beforehand (been there got the shirt etc)...make sure you don't try and keep up...make a joke of it etc and have a weak half and make it last. It'll be a blast..
21. Even if u dont like it..try listening to some Motown and listen carefully to the bass lines.Thats what I did after decades of doing the same old stuff....it was a light bulb moment. 0.2$
22. Agree with all the above though not my cuppa etc.....but try playing and singing Rabbit the way he does...incredible musician.
23. Poptastic, and from an age when a catchy pop song was a very, very clever animal indeed, most of which I think were written by the Chinny Chap super duo... Great image, great tunes.
24. Oh yes..that signature chord sound he gets and Dewars vocals..utterly unique.
25.
I don't like them either - it was suggested as an addition to our set for last NYE and was turned down flat by me. Thee are plenty of other better Stones songs.
Not saying BS is the be all and end all of classic tunes but original R&R is edgy and difficult thats why its so brilliant. Everything today has to be safe, careful, and risk averse....
