  1. Ooof - all the feels. Awful situation. *awaits better posts to follow.*
  2. Yeah what @bluewine said: she occupies a particular space in the memory; her music and personality were very much part of the 'resistance' in the civil rights movement, and add that to the resonance of her greatest hits and their uses (is there a better feminist tune than Respect that isn't I Will Survive?)
  3. Anything made for the mighty Mr Myung is bound to be fantastic, I prefer these and the earlier RBXJMs to the Bongo he wields thesedays.
  4. I have a Columbus P-Bass. It sounds just fine, but the neck appears to be granite, painted in maple and is the shape of a baseball bat - so it'll have to go!
  5. Most insightful and informative. I can barely cut MDF into a shelf, but am still fascinated by the skills behind the art. @LukeFRC is right, this ought to be pinned - perhaps there should be a section in the build diaries forum for skills, techniques etc. There are a growing number of highly skilled craftspeople here and I'm sure the budding and newbie self-builders would love an easily accessible set of guides for things like this.
  6. Looks a bit like the D Bird head; or is that the other way up? Nice either way!
  7. Dream Theater's Once in a Livetime was mostly recorded in Paris, but I was at the Camden gig shortly before/after, and I am fairly sure the inside pic of the band and first few rows of fans was from the gig I went to - because I am fairly certain it's my balding head and glasses in the 3rd row. Awesome gig.
  8. Decent mattress - £400 of memory foam loveliness. My back is very grateful.
  9. Yeah, i like the technicality of it, but the mysticism is just fluff to me. they are the George RR Martin of prog metal: albums of real quality but almost not worth waiting for!
  10. Great album; barking mad self-indulgent progginess at its finest.

    Wow, clever bit of kit
  12. I have 3 sprogs and never get the time to play, I don't even have space. the instruments are crammed into the space next to my books in my bedroom (the ones not in the loft or garage), and there are always chores or DIY tasks to do!
  13. Buy that bass. That'll do it!
  14. They're untidy - why are they not all perfectly lined up by number of strings, make, colour and size? *twitch*
  15. Yeah - I live in Halifax and do venture up that way: usually via the road up from Todmorden to Burnley, or via Wycoller. Clitheroe and surrounds broadly nice, most of the Blackburn-Oswaldtwistle-Accrington-Burnley-Nelson-Colne megaplex is pretty dire (nice Waitrose on the way north excepted)
  16. Pendle, where the inter-town bus route refers to Witches!
  17. Fairly sure i’ve not even played 43 basses, let alone owned (4 at separate times)
  18. Total privilege right there. You are part of the problem.
  19. 2 and one of them came to me free.
  20. *smelly cat, smelly cat* (howl, wail, random chord names)
  21. Yes - I remembered the Fission too, but a) expensive and b) you don't see them around much second hand (cue 5 smartypants linking ebay auctions.)
  22. I can mostly play a few dozen Rush tunes on bass, but i can’t sing for toffee, play keys or anything else while playing bass. That’s some top playing.
  23. There are some contemporary prog examples of multiple time signatures in a song; listening to the feel really helps, e.g. 6 o’clock by Dream Theater where the drums change time but the guitars don’t, or Carve Away The Stone by Rush which has 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7/4 in. or 80s era King Crimson: especially the Discipline album.
