excellent thread, excellent looking bass. Well done.

I currently play in two bands, one playing folk/Irish music, and one playing traditional blues/70's pub rock. I have just been approached by a guitarist friend of mine who has asked if I would be available for a new band he is trying to put together. My question is this - how many bands is it possible to play in without having a nervous breakdown? What with rehearsals, learning new material, and not least trying to remember 3 sets worth of songs I'm wondering if it is realistic. I would love to take the opportunity, as I enjoy playing with as many varied musicians as I can however I don't want to end up letting anyone down by missing rehearsals or poor performances. So what do you all think - how many bands so you play with, and is one more a bridge too far?

I had a warmouth jazz body and an allparts neck brought over in a suitcase recently. Came through no problem.

Oooh - now THAT was a first. I just showed my wife that Tokai and said if that's how much they fetch then I'm thinking of selling mine, and she said "no, you can't, I like that one". Do you think that means I'm ok to buy another? -

how much do we charge for new years eve
barneythedog replied to dabootsy's topic in General Discussion
Have to admit that we don't charge quite that much lol and we have never done a New Years Eve gig due to some of the band not being available but I think we would be looking at about double our normal rate and it would depend on where it was. Like most bands there are some places you like to go back to and others you love going back to so it would depend on that. Personally I would be happy with £100 each plus a few drinks as a fair rate for the evening ( I would rather play in one of our favourite pubs than do a big corporate gig but we would probably want more for that ) so if we were asked by a regular landlord we would probably go out for £80 each ( £480 ) as it would also guarantee us several more gigs for next year. Sorry to ramble but it really depends on how enjoyable previous gigs have been ( some gigs are so enjoyable I would pay to play if asked nicely lol )
Sounds similar to us, but in Euros. Mind you, there's not much difference these days -

aye, I noticed that after I posted it ... oops. -
And above all - enjoy it. I only go on about practice because I have been there and died on stage because I thought I could blag the whole evening. I still wince every time I remember. Since then I have honestly found that if I really KNOW the material, I have very little to fear. This then allows you to chill out and ENJOY the experience.
Is it that the grass is always greener on the other side? My main observation so far, is this. Having more than 4 strings is more fun when twiddling at home on your own, but come the gig, the number of strings is less important than the on-the-spot response to the rest of the band and audience, Same goes with gear. Play at home with gadgets and have fun, but on the night, keep it simple.
Words of wisdom. Off topic I know, but I love playing through my Zoom at home. On the night however, I ditch it in favour of bass, compressor, amp. The only thing I don't have is a Precision, but maybe that's just around the corner

WTF ?? Maybe I see a business opportunity here
-
Turn it down. You say it's very loud at half volume - if you mean it's too loud with the volume knob halfway round that is not unusual - a heck of a lot of amps give most of their output over the first part of the volume control travel, and are pretty much at max by half way. If it's just a volume issue then I don't see the need to go spending cash unnecessarily. If on the other hand if it's physically too BIG then maybe you are right to look at something else.
-
and lo, it was gone

know every song in the set. know every song in the set backwards know every song in the set upside down know every song in the set blindfold then go and practice the set every day between now and the gig you probably get the point by now

Still reckons the bridge pickup routing is factory original tho?
Ever played one? Or are basses about looking awesome?
Absolutely not. I can assure you (see my sig) that I am by no means obsessed with what my basses LOOK like. They are tools to do a job. The point is that poor attention to simple details is not a good indication of the overall build quality. If the person building a bass can't even draw a straight line, or stick two pieces of wood together properly ....? Steve Wishnevsky can be seen playing one of his basses here, which I am sure has been posted on BC before.
