They actually mention D shaft on a few of those, but only a couple have pictures underneath, and they still look round ? Possible
2.
Maplins would be a good place to start http://www.maplin.co...=knobs&x=0&y=0# Anything there take your fancy?
A brilliant selection Ooops, but they dont say what the fitting is inside ?
3. I have lost a knob, matron Its unlikely i will find a genuine NUX pedal knob in the UK but anything thats roughly the same size will do - its a half round shaft on the NUX, ( letter D shape ) Does anyone have any idea where to get something to fit ? I suppose even a guitar knob would work if it had the right shape inside, but of all the spare knobs i have at home, none have the D shape inside to fit over a D shape shaft. Oh, my kingdom for a funny shaped knob Booo !
4. I just tested my Bridge JBXN, full on volume , Neck pup turned off, and rotated the tone knob full on and rolled off, and there wasn't any hum. Preamp and Power amp wound up too, so i guess you needn't worry. I dont know much about electronics, so i dont know if the pots have anything to do with helping single coil pups to hum, but I changed the pots in mine to Bourns pots, the Rolls Royce of potentiometers, and i did that long before i fitted the Entwistle neo pups. So the Bourns pots may ( or may not ) be helping to eliminate hum, but i couldn't say. There's only the regular back shielding paint in the control cavity ( presumbaly done by the builder during construction ) but i havent added any other form of hum cancelling stuff
5. Bravo Andy - thats lovely work. I think i need to start me a piggy bank
6. Excellent - looking forward to the shots.
7. You'll be impressed with the neo Jazz bridge pup - the low mids are sublime
8. That really is nice work ! I might have to have a word in your shell like about a new tiger maple fretless fingerboard to replace the ebony ( originally fretted but now fretless with hills and valleys ) thats currently on my Peavey Also, do maple fingerboard always get the acrylic or epoxy gloss finish for the hardness factor - keeping string wear to a minimum ?
9.
The other option is to replace the tone control with a varitone switch. I recently built one into a pedal, and I like being able to 'tune' the mids with it.
Amen Anyone remember these ? Think they are proper inductor circuits that were built as drop in units for Jazzers mainly... I havent seen any on Ebay for a while ( American builder ) but i bought one a long way back, but kept it when i sold the bass. Its now been wedged into my Vintage MM Modder. They're pretty damn good and well built, and built neatly. Cant say if they were good VFM...i thought they were pricey, and the price varied between ( IIRC ) £60-ish > £85-ish. Mine is the expensive model, but i love it. Combined with the excellent Warman UK MM pup, its transformed my dull £99 bass into a classy £99 bass PS i agree with the vol drop as you click round on the 6 position switch, but i really only like the first 2 or 3 positions ( which are where the porky mids are )
10. I dont suffer from OCD so it it matters not to me which way round they are., and TBH, it was placed in that way due to how the wiring underneath played ball when making it clear the bottom of the pickup, so i didnt squash wiring when i screwed it down But dammit all sir, they DO sound fab ! My description is probably a little lacking to say the least, but thats all i got
11. Having found the pamphlet, they dont seem to make a dedicated full range driver for us bass boys
12. Ah - right. TBH, i didnt see any of the Volt drivers on the website that i saw in that pamphlet
13. Jeeez - just fired up the bass after installing the bridge pup which arrived today, and the output compared to the Nords is an eye opener. Actually, an ear opener. The magnets on these are just mental The lows on the neck pup are delicious, almost piano like, except my strings are not new, but even so, not at all mushy with just the neck wound up ( no bridge pup ) and the tone full on. The poles are easily height adjustable, but they dont screw up or down as it might look, they just push up or down. Nice touch though - all 8 poles are independantly height adjustable. Did i mention the magnets on these are just plain mental.? The jazz pup is rich and thick, probably akin to a DP123, but with a tad of extra clarity maybe ( its been a long time since i had a set of DP123's so take with a pinch of salt ) but you could funk all day with the bridge pup. What great values these are !! PS if you install a set, dont forget to turn your amp down from your last setting
14. Have any cab builders ever entertained the using of Volt drivers ? I got some blurb inside the box that my Beymas came in, and there's some wicked drivers in the pamphlet. Not cheap by any standards though 98.5db 50-3000hz Maximum X-max 36mm !!! http://www.voltloudspeakers.co.uk/loudspeakers/rv3153-12/
15. Quite right Phil - only tested at bedroom level so far, but within the next week or so, we'll be having a rehearsal, and then it will show its worth, and i'll post back with the results from proper volume playing
16. Sorted ! At last The nitty gritty - these Beymas coupled with the cab mods made, care of the friendly gurus and big thanks to them, specially stevie who plotted the graphs - (cheers mate), has really tightened the sound up nicely. Same output volume as the higher wattage Eminence ( though we ignore those watts mostly, i think ) But the authority, the balance, ... is lovely. F'instance - with the umodded cab + Betas, if i were to say play 14th fret on the G, then immdediately play the 14th fret on D, there was this bloom and jump in volume - strange, as you might think this was more to do with the pickups or strings or both ( Nordstrand P/J SE set ) but i doubt its them. In fact it wasn't... Its happening in front of my ears right now, as i have one unmodded cab + beta , right next to the Beyma / modded. ( dual channel power amp ) The Beyma / Modded cab has controlled this, and anywhere else i got that scenario of bloom / vol jump. It wasnt horrendous, but anyone would notice it. The evenness across lows mids and highs has improved a lot, the tone is def. tighter, and for not much layout after factoring in sales of the Betas ( 2 have gone already ) it turned out a cheap upgrade We call that a result ! 2nd cab to do now, but since its going to be a carbon copy, no need to bore the audience with this one
17. No probs Ben - and if you dont want to use Ebay, here's Simon Twine's email at pickups plus. [email protected] Thats how i got mine - Alan Entwistle had forwarded my email to Simon, who contacted me and then after a chat, he sent me a paypal invoice direct. The prices are no different to the Ebay listed one's, so it doesn't matter how you order them
18. I've also mounted the Precision and only had to cut down the foam underneath my other pickup. Good fit too, but havent used it in anger yet, as Simon has thrown a Bridge Jazz in the post, and will check them both out at the same time
19. Yeah they are. I contacted the builder Alan Entwistle, and depsite being in China at the time doing business, he replied the next day and put me onto Simon Twine at pickupsplus Alans website http://www.entwistlepickups.com/pickup.php?cat=bass And where to buy from pickups plus http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Entwistle-JBXN-Neodymium-pickup-for-bass-guitar-/231141252091?pt=UK_Guitar_Accessories&var=&hash=item35d1179bfb
20.
The only thing I would suggest is running the preamp gain as high as possible without over-driving to get the signal to noise ratio and better dynamics.
Aye Greg - thats how i have it now. preamp vol on 3/4 , before any harshness, and with power amp on nearly full, control the overall wanted vol with preamp master
21. Yeah that would figure. The only one of those 3 thats on zero is the gain input, variable between -11db upto +30db
22. I've just ordered and recieved their Neo magnet PBXN and JBXN but there was a hiccup and got sent a Jazz for neck instead of Jazz for bridge. I've been dealing with Alan's official stockist ( pickupsplus - Simon Twine ) and they're real nice to deal with. Very fast on communication and threw the pups in the post real quick. I had them the next day. So cannot test them out yet, but man these things weigh a ton. The magnets are incredibly strong too, and from 1.5" away from each other, the Jazz and P were making each other repel. They're also pretty deep in dimensions - think Dimarzio DP123's - and have yet to find out if they will sit low enough in the pickup routs to get under my low string action. Check the depth on that P pup - its monstrous !
