  1. Oasis made a good living as a covers band
  2. Yep He made it sound like every other bass he uses......
  3. Tried Alpines - good but not refined, same for Flare Audio titanium ones on pure volume reduction ACS custom moulds are an absolute life changer both for rehearsals and for gigs especially being in the audience, it’s one of those things - hearing is so precious, don’t mess about with it, go custom moulds
  4. Gun oil is not too dissimilar if you can’t get that
  5. Haha I’ve has my cuppa already.....😱
  6. I love a judicious dink whether it’s either as a finish option or indeed happened of its own accord. Its like the third child syndrome - the first one especially you treat like a china doll, by the time you get to the third you realise they bounce and they fend for themselves, so you just crack on.
  7. They are weird shapes compared to everyone else. Pick up covers I think are glued on, but they will wiggle off - you may be able to then fit another split coil underneath, but the poles may not match exactly if that bothers you. The other thing would be to get the actual Pick ups Re-wound to your own taste and that may work for you - choose your U.K. based pick up maker as per your taste!
  8. The thing about Paulownia is it’s actually ecologically very sound as it’s quick growing round in the Far East, the soft rubbish stuff you don’t use, furniture grade stuff you can, and Japanese have been using it for centuries to make clogs, furniture etc. It’s porous so it needs filling to Strengthen it, but it’s not prone to warp. Yes it is softer, but As ever it’s the quality that will set it apart, that will be the cost difference as well as skill. Good quality Paulownia holds screws etc. Manufacturers have tended to use woods local to them for ease - hence Fender with Ash, swamp ash, Alder (as well as groan properties) other woods like Agathis etc which are found more locally to Far East countries potentially get a bad rep from snobbery on eastern vs USA produced instruments. Pine was good, but featureless. Vast generalisation on that, but not far off the mark. If you want the best wood - get a natural finish bass, it has to be, cant be covered by block colours, hence why relics are the best of both worlds as they show you the quality Wood underneath!
  9. For example - depending on how the auction goes on eBay there are a couple Aria’s, a squier, a Yammy, an Ibby (Fretless)
  10. As ever with woods there will be differing quality amongst the same species, if you haven’t let the wood properly dry and cure and taken the crap cuts, drilled holes for the bridge with no care that could be wider than the screw, then it will pull out, its as absurd as saying all basses made out of Pine by all manufacturers are crap because of 1 bass that was. @markdavid you can probably get a 5 string bass from the lower end line of better companies second hand for about your price if your are patient and scour adverts on various selling sites of choice
  11. How many members in the band? If needs be and he doesn’t come up to scratch you can always say that your ‘primary’ guitarist prefers being in a 3 piece (some guitarists do)
  12. He may not be a jamming type of guy, but can get a decent part together with some practice beforehand, I know it takes me longer than my guitarist to sort something jamming out other than a root note, so we record it and revisit it the next week when I have had time to work something out (as long as the guitarist doesn’t change it!) Give him a workload which is fair and not unrealistic to learn for the next rehearsal and see where he is at, if he puts the work in, plays a decent tune and provides a consistent layer of sound that others who can jam over the top can fold around, then actually it’s not a bad thing. If he cannot pop together pre-prepared material either due to not being able to have the time to do the work, or he doesn’t play well enough, then that is another issue. Better to play with nice people of lesser ability than a genius who is a bell end
  13. I dunno, it’s how they did Shell pink in the old days
  14. Yep for eBay This just arrived - who knows what I will do?! 1 piece Ash - rout and contour as I wish
  15. I suppose if you are taking a song from one genre to your own there will be a change, but if it’s a straight cover....?
  16. If it’s a last minute gig, then I can understand simplicity, but if it’s a recurring song in a set list often done really should be nailed
  17. Nail wherever possible and stay true. For example uptown funk without the chromatic scale and throw a little bit of slap, or even heavy pluck and pop the slap part just isn’t the same. If I am mashing things up into another song there may be a slight alteration in key or timing. The crux comes when I have to sing and play at the same time, some things just don’t compute, and if I haven’t got it, I won’t do it, but I will try up until the last minute to get both. Prime example is Pressure and time by Rival sons, I can’t yet do the bridge and play the actual line, or in Rage Take the Power back, difficult time rap and slap, put rap and play is possible with some time. No brainer for me. The key is not to rely on crap tabs, take the time, use your ears, find the parts
  18. Defo not - too much fun to be had. DP3X/dUg patch by Jon Willis for a bit of drive with clarity will be worth it - it transcends genres
  19. Looks good, but that MC8 looks a bit big and incongruous on the board, have you not thought about an MC6...?
  20. Mildly condescending......there is generally the possibility something to learn/reaffirm or share from most people on here regardless of length of time playing /perceived ability of skills or them playing the White Hart or White Hart stadium.
  21. I am not as well endowed as that picture, but I have forsaken clothes storage and my double wardrobe is all gear. I figured if I can squash it all in and the door closes, the Mrs can’t complain if it’s all hidden!
  22. Good work, just passing in tips I gained from others and a bit of trial and error! Hope it works out ok with the band
  23. Yeah that may work, and also run a sliver of tape up from the cavity to just on the body which would contact to a tape bit on the underside of the pickguard. I once after carbon painting a cavity ran a thin strip halfway up the cavity right around it and then up to contact as described above and that was just enough
  24. Yep I had a similar where I grounded not just to a pot, but also to the cavity and that worked. Also if you have a pickguard make sure there is contact on the under surface shielding tape with some point of the cavity shielding so you create your faraday cage properly. Other things like mobiles phones, etc nearby if these pick ups are hotter can be an issue
