  1. Then whole whole hearted apologies for getting the wrong end of the sticky stick. IMHO - there is one culture and that’s Human Nature
  2. @Bluewine the use of compression has absolutely nothing to do with learning to play the material correctly or not, that is plainly not learning to play the material properly. If you are of the opinion that compression, or those that use it are trying to mask that, then that is derrière backwards thinking
  3. @tonyxtiger i’d Be happy if you stick in some tablet and a wee dram, that’ll do me
  4. @Ghost_Bass fuzz off for you then. to remove any unwanted noise in your chain
  5. 2 choices - if it ain’t broke and all are happy, nowt to fix. If you wanna see if it makes it better go ahead, but don’t use it once super maxed and then say, pah it’s no good. Take time to tinker, find what works for you and your playing and your band and then see. A day not going forwards is a day going backwards
  6. @Al Krow don’t be silly, there is no such thing, its all fables smoke and mirrors
  7. She baths regularly me once a week at best - typical smelly boy I am
  8. Something similar happened to me, my wife was nagging me about soemthing or other, I dunno I wasn’t playing attention, but on this occasion, I put her vocals through a compressor, and Lo and behold what she was saying suddenly made sense and I could hear it correctly. Well, I took out the bins, emptied the dishwasher and even took my weekly bath. Afterwards I managed to get a really squashed sound just by twiddling the knobs. As a result this one may be a keeper....
  9. Gig Truck - like it! i could be like Colt Seevers
  10. Unbeknown to me until recently there appears to be a vast resource of information about compression, both on this site, and over other areas of the worldy wide webbie, who would have thought..... Some people seem to like it, some people don’t. Just when the reaping has occurred and a victor/truce has been announced, the Capitol announces another compressor games where previous immunity holds no sway and we are back into the bear pit. Maybe a short survey could provide a fresh outlook. Os there continued hunger, will a truce be called, or will it be Groundhog Day? Stay tuned.......
  11. @51m0n it’s by no means serious, I like compression, I see it’s uses and I use it and I try to keep educating myself as best as I can on it, but am not in guys like yours league on it. I have to say I am not a fan of the question in the thread, and mine was about as silly as that, intentionally
  12. Great list of basssists and great chops. Thank goodness they all used compression or the audience may have left and we would never had heard of them
  13. A friend of mine who I think has a great opinion of gear, recently tried a Sire V9 jazz and was completely blown away by how good it is
  14. He forgot compression.... https://www.facebook.com/danny.sapko/posts/10159566927360274
  15. 🤦🏾‍♂️ You actually moved it off track when in publishing interim results saying 50% of people don’t have one-that was not the point of the survey. You also moved it off track posting a graph basically implying compression does nothing for a signal. Theology and politics(my fault) are bad examples(beliefs are too tricky), a better example would be more like me telllling Nuno Bettencourt his songs and progressions and guitar playing is wrong based on the fact I got my 6 string out at a campfire a couple of times. So, in the spirit of keeping it on track and staying true to the title (I know your blurb challenged people to do it at a gig) Did anyone notice a difference in the sound (pleasant or unpleasant either way) turning your compressor on and off be it gig, bedroom, house, solo, band rehearsal or any situation? (see what I did there?!)
  16. @Al Krow i know you like to challenge things, and have gone toe to toe with Alex Claber on physics of cabs, sound dispersion etc........... But did you know one of your spats that you were going toe to toe with on compression onTalkbass is Frank Appleton who is a CEO of FEA labs, and may know a thing or 3 about compression. Yep those guys could be way off the mark in what they are saying........
  17. @PaulWarning I agree with you totally, from having read a numerous amount of threads it seems to me the no compression group say prove you don’t need it, the compression group give examples of where compression is used at every point along a signal chain, whether intentional or not, and then things like it’s a cover up for sloppy technique, I don’t use one and my sound is fine comes out, yes it happens in studio recorded music and that’s fine, but no need live, The audience won’t notice etc and it all descends. Is it compressor as a function, as an effect, as a limiter, for sustain......... I Suppose the question is do you want an additional compressor pedal or rackmount, in addition to the natural compression happening in your chain? If you want to yes, if you don’t, don’t. If you want to experiment do it!
  18. @Brook_fan ah yes, that was probably because the OP also posted the same thread on Talkbass at the same time and was relaying 1 of those results not in favour of compression, and I just pointed out in the interest of balance that the other 99% of replies thought it was just another thinly veiled compressor bashing thread. And I cannot disagree with your description of a use for compression amongst the many out there depending how you set it up
  19. @Brook_fan if it’s in relation to Europe stuff, it was only mentioned once or twice, andnthats my fault, but actually it’s sort of relevant and comparative. According to the figures it’s a 50-50 split, each camp will believe they are right and will trot out reasons for it, and the debate will roll on........going no further as I certainly don’t want to politicise it!
