All I can say is that Markbass are on the ‘wooly’ Side of the spectrum, and have a play to find the sound you like with or without pedals. Its the only way to get it, it’s what I did. I could suggest what I have used, by it may not be to your ears, bass style, liking etc. What I will say is try to change one piece of the chain at a time and live with it for a while, as when you first change there will always be a difference, not always better!

No he’s said you could get near depending on how you dial things in. His is dialled in differently as it’s his sound. He also refers to them with reference as to how good their sound is. The key is not just the bass in isolation, it’s in the context of the song and what guitars are doing around him. Yes he has a signature sound, but it does alter slightly as to how he mixes it and clean and distortion. Listen to the evolution of it through Kings X albums Faith Hope Love, Gretchen goes to Nebraska, Tapehead, Ear candy, Dogman and it’s not just down to down tuning for which they were one of the first main stream rock doing it alongside Dokken, even though blues had been doing it for years. Listen to his Bass sound in other bands Supershine, KXM both albums and Grinder Blues, you will get more of a picture of possibilities and how to fold the bass around the music. Now there is nothing wrong with the bass being more upfront and the main driver of the song, so that will require a sound which in isolation will sound more pleasing. Subtle differences depending on the band, take Glenn Hughes, playing with Joe Bonamassa he will sound different with Black country communion compared to Deep Purple. Look at Muzz Skillings compared to Doug Wimbish In Living Colour and how they differ, and that is with the same guitarist. Muzz is in the Vivid and Times up albums. Its all about balance, and I won’t mention you don’t need to crank the distortion on it, because you’ll probably say it’s a dirt pedal and that’s what you are supposed to do with it, it’s the primary function.....

Kind of you to say Mr Krow 👊🏾👍🏾. And thanks for amp compliments, I deliberately chose it as it’s v clean and will reproduce what myriad of stuff I send it! dUg is known for his dirt, but if this is to be sold as a take anywhere pedal then it needs to have a good clean tone as a base, or then it is just another dirt pedal if you catch my drift. Its a pre-amp pedal with dirt from mild to monster capabilities. Now it does have fixed crossover points, compression ratio’s etc. So it’s not hyper intuitive whereby every facet is for you to control like some may be, but if you are a Tech21 fan, you know what you are getting. A similar example is that Trickfish Preamp Pedal I put up on the thread in some respects (without dirt and it has 2 channels for 2 different bases to be Eq’d), or Verellen Meatsmoke if you like grit. I think manufacturers are finally being smart with things like this. Most people have an amp of some description where it has a power section, and a lot of venues have PA’s. Before these if you liked an Amp you had to shell out the cost for that amp for that sound and store it, that’s upwards of £1k for the ones I mentioned. Now you can have the sound, in a compact solution with your existing kit. I think it’s great at the moment to be a bassist!

@Al Krow for once I will disagree with you! I don’t think there will be a rush on these second hand. There is no disrespect to they that don’t want it, but I think those that will get it, really know what they are getting themselves into and what this will deliver. There are not huge numbers of flyrigs jumping around, don’t know how many units were sold, but that again is different as people who move it generally don’t use all the effects (from what i have read). This is a clean tone and a monster, or whatever distorted tone you want in a matchbox, for £270, and you may not need your amps at all (don’t forget the tuner!) Check our Grinder Blues his blues band, unfortunately they didn’t do any UK gigs or I would have been there, there will be some footage. He did a whole European tour with a bass and this and just used whatever was in each venue. Awesome!

@Lozz196 don’t resist, it’s futile. You are in good company here with us other strong minded folk. Imagine it through your Ashdown- Nirvana, Zion and Valhalla all in one

I’ve heard Andertons are accepting pre orders with 25% deposit based on a price of £290 and they estimate it to be £260-290. Don’t think it’s on the website, but you can call

@Al Krow accept apologies..., take the drive bit out my post and it's more representative

@Kev I am going to sit on the fence and see both sides of the argument, as both are valid. @Wolverinebass simply pointed out that the multiFx units like Line6, Fractal AX8, Boss has a new one at NAMM are not far off in price to 1 pedal and you get a load more, including the sound of a similar pedal (no doubt an AO patch will become available). There is nothing wrong in that, you are a seasoned player, know what you want, and will get it to use it how you want. There may be people newer to effects than you who stumble across the forum and thread and some balance to show them opportunities out there is justified. You could take it further and say why not spend the same money on a Genzler 350 Magellan which has one of the best drive channels out there, AND is an amplifier which is ultimately more useful than just a pedal. @fretmeister And Wolverine’s posts are not saying get the cheapest version of something, they are saying if you spend a little more you can get the same thing practically, AND a whole heap more. So it’s more saying don’t get a Ferrari with just 1gear, get one with flappy paddles, 7 speed gear box, reverse etc. I think sometimes we all get defensive of products we like, I certainly do with my stuff!

Can only comment on what I have heard, but aside from the obvious rack vs floor you will get different sounds enough to have both in your set up!
-
It’s a shame, but I hear prices are on the increase to display. Sandberg not there, Barefaced not there, not surprising on a way

I am not a fan of Ray’s in general but even I am finding these very tempting, I think it’s good work by EB

Can’t comment on everything, but I have a mahogany Kala bass and I exchanged the rubber strings for the roundwounds. Means I still get that thump, but also I can e decent noise with a pick. Action is quite high on them, but it’s a whole heap of fun. No matter which you get you will like it
