What gear do you use to get the best tone for your bass DI?
Cuzzie replied to violetelectric's topic in Recording
Tried a few various ones - but this was pretty fun and good, and yes in all likelihood overkill. Bass into a radial JDI - Clean unaltered signal taken from this and run the signal on. Into pedals which as a CaliCB compressor and Tech21 DP3X (running clean or dirty) - DI out the pedal. The signal chain carried onto my amp (Tech21 dUg Ultrabass 1000) and i took the DI out of that. It gives 3 simultaneous tracks - You can use the JDI at any point to give a run off of the signal at that point. Is it any better than what is suggested?I dunno, but it was fun and you have 3 different sounds all in time etc. To then layer a sound. -
Like this -nice work

Checked my BF cabs - no sharp edges - no issues

If you’ve seen the film of the same name as the pedal - it’s just fine!

I have a focusrite Scarlett - it’s great - choose the one with as many channels as you want, or presonus is fine. It comes packaged with lite versions of DAW’s - which are fine - I chose to get Logic X Pro. Microphone - so much choice out there but I have Sennheiser e935 - mainly for live work but it records ok - second hand is a good market, but Shure ones you mentioned will be fine. Get a mic stand and a pop shield definitely. For drums get EZDRUMMER or Superior Drummer - they offer trials to see if you like, and you can add drum packs when they are on offer. Real drums recorded giving an awesome array of real drum loops, you won’t regret this one. You can get this all in budget -
Back onto fart gags again......

It is amazing how some folk read things in different ways, and it’s not a diss by any stretch, but I got something more like Alex wrote on here from the online description as opposed to just being heavy distortion/fuzz

All the points are encapsulated - some like fully digital, some like some aspects of digital, some like analogue - to suggest any are dinosaurs/superior or the norm is folly really. When touring happened i saw a decent chunk of bands who I know have been through normal amp to fractal/keeper/line 6 and then back to normal amps even without in ears at good stage and venue volumes with a great mix. it can all be achieved

I reckon i am on Santa’s naughty list

Thats because people spent too much time lambasting and throwing shots about what i should have had etc. @Al Krow you say it is pitted against the stomp, but you yourself are not a fan of most PC editors, even on board pedal editors, so surely (and it doesn’t mean you should get one) you are a target audience for this? As @EBS_freak said everyone is allowed an opinion, but then in the next breath said that most people giving the opinion are deaf or in a honeymoon period, so should the opinions be listened too? Some people move in silence and don’t need to declare the pedal has been bought or not bought. The pedal will be good, of that there is little doubt, it has 2 quality teams behind it - i think we can all confidently say that - only Alex knows how many units need to be shifted to make it a ‘success’, so we will see.

@alexclaber can I ask about the innards of the pedal - for the fuzz/OD what is creating the clipping is it silicone or germanium based or a combination?
-
Yeah - we had a little chat a while ago about it. Tech21 dUg Ultrabass 1000 No longer in production. The DP3X is mighty fine and catches its essence, as do a lot of the helix patches etc out there - but getting down into the nitty gritty and variability of it - there is nowt that quite replicates it

Is this turning into a 2v1 or a battle royales with cheese

A maybe again! Vinyl was nostalgia, The future was mini disc (i personally loved them) CD, MP3 and Vinyl has managed to sneak its way back in. Who knows what is going to happen to venues etc. With what’s going on - maybe we’ll have to play in venues without existing PA’s as they cannot afford to buy them in, and having old fashioned amps and cabs brought in by the bands may become a reality. I know my amp is difficult to replicate, its been modelled closely, but not enough yet, and if needs be i could use it as a giant pedal without a cab

Thanks for your answer - Defo deserves a response I know most of it's rhetorical - but I'll have a stab - How many would have gone out and gotten it if it was an amp released and bitten the bullet? At the moment, not a lot. Unless it's was a cheap combo or practice amp for use at home. I'm sure there's a lot of people that are wondering whether they'll ever gig again. There's a lot of re-evaluation going on for a lot of people, especially if there's a lot of money tied up in gear that doesn't look like it will be used in the foreseeable. If it was an amp, it's impossible to say what would have happened - a lot of people would buy off the specs. There's no specs, there's no amp. It's a pointless question really - but I will nail my colours to the mast... given the pandemic, if there was an amp for sale, I would guess the sales figures would be impacted way, way more right now, than a pedal, which can be used at gigs, at home, rehearsals (if allowed) and recording sessions... oh and they are a lot cheaper than amp is likely to be. Yep it was rhetorical, and possibly a silly question, but a fair few responses showed dismay it was only a pedal, not an amp giving an impression that they may have been in for it if it was an amp. How many who would have bitten the bullet bought the pedal have changed their minds based on the graphics and lack of DI amongst the other things mentioned? ZVex made alterations to their SHO because they failed to take into account, theres a whole load of church players in the states that liked the pedal, but felt it was inappropriate to have Super Hard On written on it. I guess there will be all sort of people offended by that kinda thing. That promptly had a change of heart and relabelled it the SHO. Of course, you could have taped over it... but why would you want to do that when you've bought a pedal at a premium? Design is a very important - and often overlooked element of a product. There's always the camp that don't care, it's functional, it works, it does what they want it to... but they are also the people that don't care having their car doors dinged at the supermarket. If you are investing in a product, there's a certain element of visual appeal that in many cases, takes place. I hate the look of the Fiat Multipla. It could be the best car in the world... but I hate looking at it. Would I care if I hated looking at an FX pedal? Probably not... but if there were two otherwise identical sounding units, I'd take the one that visually appeals to me. The DI element - well, that's a fundamental requirement to some. If it doesn't offer it and you want it, look elsewhere, or go begging for a v2 and hope for the best. I am guessing that this product has been produced to be the minimum viable product that has enough appeal to sell over competitor products. Adding DI would be an added expense that the vast majority of people would not have used. Is this a preamp? Or a magical fuzz, grind, clean whatever box. If you want a pre, get a pre with a DI. If you want a whatever box, consider this. Of course looks matter, but things like super hard on or Pussycat Melter pedal Made for Satchel Of Steel Panther are a complete world apart. The graphics part was more about the ire or lines/waveforms instead of words for the functions of the knobs which does not seem to be present at plenty of other pedals out there that do something similar. The DI - most desks/audio interfaces will be able to take a hotter signal, and i would think that most people who need a DI as essential will probably own/carry a dedicated DI box have something else with it - happy to be wrong. How many people will throw in thoughts on what they thought the pedal should do/look like and never had an intention of getting it or anything like it anyway and use that as an excuse for not getting it? If you are never ever going to own a Ferrari, does that mean you can't have an opinion on what you would have liked to see on it or comment on what you don't like about it? It all forms part of the market research and is a valid input. A Ferrari has to have curbside appeal so that those that don't own it, aspire to own it. Fair point, everyone can have an opinion and can have valid input, but often you’ll seethe comment, i would have got ‘x’ but it doesn’t have ‘y’ when in all likelihood they were ever going to get it. How many people would change their view based on any clips coming out from BF/COG or based on a BCer who may get one and give their thoughts, and does it matter which member does that in weighting the review/opinion? Not me. No offense, most of you guys are deaf or are prone to honeymoon periods. I'd like to see reviews just to see if I agree or disagree with the points of views displayed in said videos... and get more informed about what's out there. Again your opinion is fine and many people knows exactly what they want and like deaf or not. Honeymoon periods can relate to a journey people are going through with a particular sound. It may or may not be fickle, it could just be searching. If it suddenly appears on Tim C or Dusty Hills board, does that make a difference? Hell no, there's only two people in the bass playing world that prompt people to buy gear. That's Mark King and Marcus Miller. And the people buying that gear tend to be those in jobs outside of music. What people play and the whole endorsement thing is a complete nonsense. The artist using is essentially irrelevant - we all have a weak spot for a product be it a manufacturer, user, endorser etc What’s the conclusion? We are on a forum where people share views and opinions. Sometimes in keeping with others views, sometimes not. What's the problem with that? Does it really matter if anybody buys this or not? Maybe to Alex. Not to the rest of us. But if we disclose information about what's good or what's bad, it will drive improvement... and when it comes to Barefaced, people seem to have issue whenever something is said that doesn't go with the grain, whatever that may or may not be. So I think we are on the same page. Maybe? Maybe - I think some things cop it more than others, some products or manufacturers do not get as much love as they deserve, some are sitting in the middle. The point more is that more often than not, something gets numerous pages about its faults without actually knowing anything about a product. TB is berated for being over positive about things, and having people say you had me at Timmy C, but the reverse often seen here is just as bad. We are probably not far off......

But the brand does Bass cabs, guitar cabs, Powered FRFR cabs - technically this serves all masters as it can be used on bass, guitar, synth according to its written profile - it surely makes more sense

You have to ask the questions: How many would have gone out and gotten it if it was an amp released and bitten the bullet? How many who would have bitten the bullet bought the pedal have changed their minds based on the graphics and lack of DI amongst the other things mentioned? How many people will throw in thoughts on what they thought the pedal should do/look like and never had an intention of getting it or anything like it anyway and use that as an excuse for not getting it? How many people would change their view based on any clips coming out from BF/COG or based on a BCer who may get one and give their thoughts, and does it matter which member does that in weighting the review/opinion? If it suddenly appears on Tim C or Dusty Hills board, does that make a difference? This will evidently go in roundabouts What’s the conclusion? A manufacturer has the balls to release a new product to their line which is core to their values, and yes there are distortion and fuzz pedals out there, but so what, this may just be a stellar one. Some will like, some will say it’s so so, some may not like at all. Good luck to the maker and those that may or may not get it

Exactly - I had the Mantic beef bag, other Mantic pedals have different names. Do we really have to be so descriptive of everything? Maybe I should write to the people that make emoji’s and say we want one of a Pen15 instead of the Aubergine as I am getting confused between someone asking me for dinner and someone asking me for ‘coffee’
