  1. Bit more progress on this - routes and now going through the oiling stage - apologies for the low light on a couple - it’s in me shed. The block of wood above the full length shot is for the next build! The block started at 5kg - this is hovering at around 2kg no hardware so should be nice and light
  2. Cheers - it’s tone for days and not just dirt - clean is wonderful too as well as just a little break up. I have mine in one of those trolley Dolly Gator wheelie semi hard cases - the 2U one has space for a rack tuner, I I need nothing else and it’s very easy to transport, which one do you have?
  3. Tech21 dUg Ultrabass 1000 - basically it’s quite expensive (I got a great second hand deal on mine!) and niche so sales were never going to be great, and the DP3X pedal has probably killed it as you can get nearly all the way there with that and another amp
  4. Ok - my solid state with no fan came out in 2015, it’s discontinued now (not for any reliability of issues of it being rubbish) - I would call that modern - but it is a 2U rack size
  5. How old is old? or how modern?
  6. I just ordered the last one, I don’t mind if they make a boob, but I hope they don’t pink torpedo it up
  7. The naked tone (not in a band context) is for me normally not that pleasing to the ears be it headphones or through a speaker - I try to remember it and tweak accordingly - it sort of has to sound wrong to sound right. For solo practice, I just use a more pleasing tone just to know I have timing, notes etc correct
  8. We are all being a bit harsh on the company, they may just be having a few teething issues......
  9. Looks top notch my man, you know you are a tubes man at heart - can’t wait to have a play Congrats
  10. Plenty people buy a bass because of the headstock logo despite it being possibly inferior to another make....
  11. Replicating a journey of mine - G&L’s went out the door when Sandberg came along - congrats
  12. Pretty sure I got hem from there, b can’t see them now.......if something rings a bell I’ll let you know
  13. All depends on how much look and tightness means to you. I got a set from Axesrus, their own brand - £24 all in, do the job very well, if you are harsh you can tell they are not geared as well but they do not drop the tuning and hold it well, or hold off for the second hand market
  14. The licensed (more expensive ones) can be configured to Right or left side, the standard ones they are fixed to either right or left
  15. Depends on the hole size of your tuning pegs in the neck head. If the hole is bigger than the bushing, then you can often just wrap tape around the bushing that screws over the peg to make it fit and it can’t be seen, obviously not the same the other way round. USA licensed ones which are more expensive are able to be swapped around by unscrewing and re-arranging. Cheaper version are just as good but you can’t swap
  16. Agreed with above - some of it will come down to the size of head you want - my solid state doesn’t have a fan - but it’s ‘big’ for today’s size at 2U rack size. Its got loads of space inside to keep it cool, but I love the sound so it’s a no brainer.
  17. Next mission to search!
  18. I really don’t think you will regret it - when you speak to him you can ask him to vary somewhat from the ‘stock’ pick ups he does, for example leaning a 58 slightly more to a 60’s
  19. Exactly my feelings - latest build was a use up the parts draw thing, next one will be English spalted Ash body, and I like the idea of the rest being UK as well - good idea.
  20. It’s defo a humbucker
  21. I have a Bassculture DC5 in my parts cupboard you are welcome to Haüssel’s are very good pick ups, and they have real balls if you like higher output. Their J pick up is one of the few that solo’d in the neck give you an almost P sound
  22. I am not sure if they do a 5 string but the Seymour Duncan Hot stack P I eventually managed to source and pop in a build - it’s the same as the Dusty Hill Fender bass - it’s super hot at 29.8k but what a lovely lovely pick up - glorious for finger style Play.
  23. Oh you will be fine then, I have been trying to learn from scratch - routers are very cool, I’ll let you know what I have but it’s the bits that are most important for sure. The pick up thing will to a certain extent be visual - are you a ‘has to be middle of the magnet man’ or not - sonically being off set is just different - look at Old Smoothie Stingray for example where it was made deliberately so. To that end the spacing may not be ‘so’ important depending on what you like
  24. Or a hum cancelling stacked coil?
  25. Sounds great and go for it!!! Absolutely with the neck this is where you need your luthier to get it spot on, it’s so important, a slightly scruffy body is mojo (that’s what I tell myself with my builds!) but necks have to be spot on. Templating isn’t pretty easy actually, just get some big sheets of MDF, and make sure you have a dust mask as it’s bike stuff, even pick up and neck pockets are easy to rout, and there are loads of tips for reference points out there, bang me a PM with your email and or number and I’ll share what I have gleaned over time if you are interested. For all things finish related I have found Dartfords to be about the best company in the U.K. for stuff Hardware is so personal, but there is a reason Hipshot and Gotoh stand the test of time - I particularly like the Carbon-o-lite series if you fancy splashing the cash!
