Four String Five String? Now NBD. Why is nobody surprised?
Cuzzie replied to Skinnyman's topic in General Discussion
The detuner is great. You can fit multiple ones to your bass if you want, and you can also get a double stop lever so you can go down 2 notes. I have done normal basses BEAD no problem, and am often permanently in drop D and half a step down so am nearly there most of the time. If you want a new bass have a look at the Schecter C4 apocalypse Ex which is a 4 string set to be BEAD with a 35” scale -
Cheers Can’t say I am a pro by any means, but you are not too far down the road and if you want to do a refin on what you have, happy to pass on anything I have learnt. I will say so far as paints, grain fillers, sealers etc spray cans go - Dartfords from the Rothko and Frost website are very good, better than the northwest guitars ones I used previously

There are a fair few imperfections on this thing, and I have already provided relic features by wafting a soldering Iron too freely and burning some finish, couple of chips already, intentional not smooth sand finish - it’s a living piece set out to get a few scars
-
Nope - an intentional palm placement dent for where I like to play from time to time - it’s fully quirky!
-
Far from perfect but it sounds and feels good - a few quirks for the OCD lot out there, but we’ll let them past between friends
-
Keeping it classic or considering reversing each P?
-
@LukeFRC never thought you were BF bashing, just interested in conclusions depending on how we all play and what we play
-
Isn’t the point of the SC and the 12XN that it isn’t the ‘Barefaced sound’ - it’s actually the sound you are putting in amplified, and with no offence made, it’s means you don’t like your raw sound without speaker coloration.
-
Looking forward to this. i nearly tried one and was going to get Jaime at Creamery to wind me a match at the bridge for a 58 at the neck
-
Well I took me at least 5 reads to get the right vowel when it said purple ball end.....
-
Very light sanding to the side of The nut and it slipped in and held tight - no need for glue
-
Yep - It’s a Tusq XL nut at 39mm, that neck is 42mm so far in my hands not attached - very playable
-
I completely get that, and for the savvy buyer it can be used to their advantage
-
It’s one thing that annoys me when people sell on different platforms for different prices-I suppose there is room to wriggle them down to their other price - most reverb sellers are happy to have some form of negotiation

Yeah of course, it’s a guy on eBay blackstar-guitars https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/303518152681 on message comms with him he says they are made in the same Japan factory as Allparts necks. It feels and looks very similar to an Allparts neck I have so I can only take him on face value and he was quick and efficient with comms and delivery. Its not the fattest P neck you will see, it’s defo a P and fatter than a jazz and seems to hit the right spots, but will let you know when it’s hooked up I have done some rear relic, which I know is not everyone’s taste, but I will leave the finger board alone despite wanting to get the acetone out and see! I like a more bare wood feel anyway. Fret work is good, you’ll see in the pics the nut I fitted is slightly too small, but I only had a jazz nut sitting around, and couldn’t be bothered to order another - heel access truss rod.

Have to echo that, as we can all agree there is no wrong answer here, phenomenal cabs and the One10 still amazes me on what it can handle and do for its size. Of course there are preferences, but I’ve used them side by side personally, 12XN on its own is genius. Supertwin all the way for me - I think my standpoint is with correct EQ/Preamp etc you can get the 12XN on its own to sound like the other 2, but not vice versa.
-
I certainly will do, thanks for your kind words - happy to admit that some contours were a happy accident - if you see the one on the top horn on the Painted rear shot, that was slightly over zealous chiselling! When I get her/him up and running, I’ll try to compare with my ‘58 P (sort of). That one is a mighty mite body (alder instead of Ash), all parts neck (so should be similar), 4 bolt play instead of 6 bolt ferrules, Hipshot A instead of B bridge and it’s a Creamery 58 - I know a lot of variables, but it’s a sound I love. Will try to get done ASAP - the terror of homeschooling aside
-
Will do, and I get what you are saying, but part of the last few posts were exploring trying to get people to play together safely, and the others about trying to predict when things could change and we could reliably decrease anxiety of playing out live whatever the gov say.

The protests will be key, it could be seen as a ‘testing’ bed. If approx 2-3 weeks after the protest there is not a steep second wave rise, and I suggest waiting another 4-6 weeks or so after that for people seeing relatives/friends to check for another wave in the non-protest Group it should give us some idea.
-
I think that is precisely the key and depends on the level of trust. If for example you have 3 people Who have been vigilantly shielding, going to someone’s garage to jam is probably ok. Similarly if you have 3 people who are careful but are frontline staff with an equal exposure risk, then again it’s probably ok, it’s a many convoluted thing, but could work with the right crew.

So........Started with a slab of ash Did some shaping by hand with a spoke shave, Shinto saw and finished off with a router and orbital sander To 3000 grit (not even though) - belly cut and forearm contour to my spec for where I rest my hands - thanks to @Jabba_the_gut for telling me how to do a neck pocket. Dartfords black grain fill and sealed so when it naturally relics older looking wood will come through. Decided on doing a blood orange colour - again Dartfords have awesome nitro spray cans, I deliberately wanted some grain to show. Hipshot B style bridge, Seymour Duncan 51 P stack pick up (same as in fender dusty hill bass and their 51 P reissue Custom shop), tonestyler bass ten to be fitted. Pickguard is a normal white P one shaped to what I fancy, @Deedee kindly sent a black 51 pickguard which I may also use but I will have to shave back the neck pocket part (no hassle), or bare, I can choose depending on my outifit. Maple neck from same factory as Allparts get theirs, but cheaper and will be Hipshot ultralites (again thanks Deedee for the trade) Thats the latest parts bass - should pop it together this weekend hopefully!

It’s difficult, but if we take live performing out of the equation, it all depends what kind of musicians you play with Or bands you are in. The only people I play with are mates, and good mates at that - we all trust each other and are doing the right thing in our respective bubbles, in fact because of my job I am probably the biggest risk. But.......If you have this level of trust with band mates, then it’s conceivable to meet and jam and play around during this time I would imagine

It slightly misses the point that if these young people though less susceptible become carriers, they are likely to have parents, relatives, grandparents, workmates in the vulnerable or over 60 group. Yes they may not be affected, but others may and probably will be if it is spread around As mentioned earlier on these posts, it’s not just fatalities, the the morbidity which can be life long. This remains a difficult problem. I don’t have the solutions, but all angles need to be considered
-
Agreed - I go to 1000 minimum and even then if you want an über smooth finish you have to work hard and be prepared to use your hand and not just the orbital sander. Oil finish I’ve used Gun Oil to good effect which is similar to the ones mentioned. The finish you want is dependent on you and how much work. If you want a gloss/shiny finish I would dilute it with white spirits and white sand in the first couple coats, then use as normal and build them up and buff it
