I doubt that, I play at a sensible volume, they'll last a long time
Erm I was talking about Ash's cab that is being built by Matamp, it's now either finished or nearly finished.

Well as for touring with tube amps, I gig loads and tour quite often and all my amps are tube, as our both my guitarists, we don't have problems with them. I just had my 400+ serviced and it was about £100 but at the same time it's from 1982 and none of the previous 3 owners (all bc'ers) mentioned that they ever had anything fixed. The tall and short of it is if you want a tube amp sound nothing but a tube amp will do you, regardless of people going on about the benefits of tube preamps and ss power amps, tube pre's do not add that extra harmonic depth. I'm looking at getting rid of my 400+ to get 2 Matamp GT200's, I also have 2 Mesa Boogie Stategy 400's that I'm going to pair with an Alembic F-1X, So I might end up with the Alembic and a Strategy and 2 GT-200's, or a GT200 and the Alembic and 2 Strategies or 2 GT200's and the 400+ Not sure at the moment, they all have their pros and cons the main Matamp con is the cost of buying 2 of them which I can't do outright and I can't sell my Mesa gear off to fund it as I'd have nothing gig worthy then but once the Alembic comes the 400+ can go and the first GT200 can come in then a Strategy can go as I can use a GT200 and Strategy and then the 2nd GT200 will come in and then I can take it from there.........maybe How I've broken it down recently is this Mesa 400+ Pros Loud Rackmountable Cheap relationally to other tube gear (2nd Hand) Very robust and roadworthy Lots of eq and tone options and plenty of I/O for all your needs Mesa Tone Cons Very expensive to retube No support from Mesa or Warrenty Mesa Tone (This is in both because you either love it or hate it, I plugged a GT200 into my Strategy and it still has all that clean top that Mesa's have, this can be great or awful) GT200 Pros Loud Reliable Cheap to retube (£120 to do all the power tubes) Lifetime warrenty where most repairs are done for free Custom built to your spec both sound and asthetics Cons Cost due to people never selling them second hand but at the same time still cheaper than Hiwatt and Orange Won't do a 2ohm load (But you were never going to run 2 8x10's on this like me) That's about all I can think of

You should have gone with the Audere preamp personally mate

Bass Day UK 2009 (Royal Northern College of Music - Nov 22)

Matamp have just booked a stall on the 3rd floor, so plenty of cabs and amps for people to try I'll also be there. -
Be interested to know what you use for your 'cream pie' patch? My plan for the 6 effects is currently... Whammy, Octave, Synth, Delay, Reverb, Boost. And to keep separate drive pedals. But I may just filter everything off into two different scenes lumped into two groups of effects I commonly use together if I like the drive sounds. I can't wait to have a play though!
Tube Comp

Mad synth-like bass sounds without getting a synth?

Sounds like you want a drone looper like the dd3 to fire a sound into and hold it -
Mad synth-like bass sounds without getting a synth?

How does this sound to you? http://www.grygrx.net/bass/tayste/Synths%202.mp3 -
It was alright about 200m from the Riots but lots of police so was all good.

I posted these over on TB someone asked me to do these goatkeeper settings only thing I adjust in this clip is the speed, I don't use trem often so just playing it by ear and guessing something that shows it off. http://www.grygrx.net/bass/tayste/Goatkeeper.mp3 As for the others people, All clips recorded with my Valenti J4 tuned DGCF into M13 into Radial ProDI into M-Audio Firewire 410 into Audacity, nothing other than M13 here. Fuzz and Wah Ok so this goes Clean - Wah - Fuzz - Fuzz Wah, these are my preferred settings that I use live. http://www.grygrx.net/bass/tayste/Fuzz%20&%20Wah.mp3 Synth 1 These are a mix of 4 fx used in different conversations first is Octave Down Fuzz, then Octave Down Fuzz and Voice Box (I use this as my Subdecay Noisebox clone), then Octave Down Fuzz and one of the Tron filters (My 442 clone), then Facial Fuzz and same Tron filter, then Facial Fuzz and Voice Box. So to me this gives you an idea of traditional fx combinations. http://www.grygrx.net/bass/tayste/Synths%201.mp3 Synth 2 These are particular synth ones, I can't remember them all but will happily upload a sysex file of it, but near the end I turn on a few combinations of the fx used previously and to me it's just stunning and that's the real plus to this unit, is if you require 3 synths to get your synth sound you can http://www.grygrx.net/bass/tayste/Synths%202.mp3 Let me know what you think Cheers

Visual volume ones have a boost in them, so you can go above unity gain.
Pretty univerally £329.99. Except dv247 who have it for £326.71. Dunno if any of those are postage free. Tonefactor works out about £280 with their $20 shipping I think? But you'll wait longer to get it. They're usually pretty good with customs, but you never know. I got it to about 250-260 with shipping unless the rate has dropped since yesterday. It would be about a 10 day wait but I snagged the last one so they need to restock. I think the £100 quid saving is worth it.

Flapping backward and foward = not rigid. Weakest link is the back, pressure is equal in all directions, and thats where the energy is lost.
Yep, but obviously that depends on your definition of rigid but I would agree on a speaker cab back moving = not rigid But if you just the cab on a whole, it could be classed as rigid as a cube
No, I didn't mean size matters more for portability than weight does, I meant that size has a measurable effect on output (though it's complex) whilst weight has no effect whatsoever (assuming rigidity is maintained). Alex
Fair enough but on that, the Matamp 4x10 sounds alot better than the EA one did, I'm not aware of the volumes (not loudness) of the cabs as the Matamp is deeper but the EA was wider, both are ported cabs. I was always under the impression that density of wood had a large part to play maybe this is what you mean by rigidity but if the sides of a cab are vibrating heavily then energy is being expelled sideways and not straight forward like we want, maybe this refers the rigidity. I was at a gig and some guy brought some home made mdf and chipboard cabs and they were rigid, I could jump on them if I wanted, they were big and quite light but the back flapped forwards and backwards like a speaker due to the thin wood used there, but all the while still rigid (as in square and you can stand on it without it collapsing)

I wouldn't really call 100w and 200w low power in the tube world and I did put my 400+ into but didn't think it was worth mentioning as I doubt anyone with a 400+ is looking for a cab they can carry with 1 hand.
Got the Northern Compact from Monz a couple of weeks ago. Instantly impressed a) Monz made a fair detour to drop it off and The Compact must be helium filled - it weighs nowt! Alex's 'one hand carry' claim is not bull! Had a small 70th birthday party gig the same night so got a faint tryout, but since the Trace was less than volume 1 and we were on a hollow framework stage the sound was hard to assess. Took it back to the shop and hung around after closing time so I could make some noise. MmmHmm! A-Bing with my EA CXL112, using Trace AH250SMX. I'm used to 10s and 12s, so I can find 'my sound' easily with such. Doing that then swapping the cable to the Compact changed the tone, naturally enough. My first reaction was to remember why I switched from 15s all those years ago. However, after a faint tweak of the EQ (actually taking it more towards flat) and a few more minutes, all the time trying different basses - Overwater Progress III fretless, OW Jazz 5, Aria Jazz DLX and Cruiser P-bass - I started really getting into it. Trying the two cabs together the bottom end disappeared, so I resoldered one of my speaker leads to reverse the phase - problem solved. Does that sound about right, Alex? On balance I'd say I prefer my existing smaller cab and speaker as a standalone to get my regular sound, but wouldn't struggle if I was offerd use of a rig with the Compact. If I was doing bigger gigs, space-wise, My existing setup with the addition of a Compact would be great! Also, as my crappy photo in the kitchen shows, the dimensions are perfect for an integrated look. Hmm.. maybe the wife will go for that one? Monz mentioned on handover that he felt the cab was vibrating such that you wouldn't want to put anything on top of it. Visions of our old washing machine with a trashed damper flashed across my mind! No such probs or me, even when I had the ceiling of the shop rattling! Must go and see Monz in action, methinks.. All this time, I had in my head a price tag of about £650, and having heard and carried the Compact I'd already decided that it was well worth the money. I've just looked on Alex's website http://www.barefacedbass.com/thecompact.html and realised the cab goes for £450 plus shipping.. BARGAIN ALERT! Anyway, I handed the Compact on to Rik(ESA) last Friday evening outside the Shama at Bingley http://www.shamabingley.co.uk/ which is another major recommendation from me if anyone is in the area. Then on to Tonybassplayer, I believe. Anyone else between W.Yorks and the Northeast? A massive vote of thanks to Alex for the trust and the use of the cab. I'm seriously tempted.. anyone want a bombproof 2x10?
This is interesting because I had it a few hours before you did when Monz dropped something off to me and my direct comparison was against the CXL112 I use to own and I came out with a similar conclusion, that if faced with having to play a single small cab I'd go with the EA again. We both commented about the vibrations, which in our defence we both use all tube heads so there is a lot more low end and additional harmonics in our sound than some other peoples and also having a more fragile tube amp on top when vibrations reduce tube life is also a concern. My direct comparison was with the Matamp 2x12 which I aquired/wouldn't let Monz leave with it. It worked a lot better more me and my sound, more volume, more depth to the tone, greater power handling and sweeter sound with a cranked tube amp, that's not to say that the Compact was a bad cab, but it's not right for me, but then I don't have weight or size concerns with what I do, but I was surprised when I put the 2x12 next to it, there was only a couple of inches here and there to it. But glad I got to try one anyway I can put it in the gear memory banks
Depending on your idea of how loud LOUD is, I'd say that it isn't weight that matters but size. Obviously larger cabs are heavier but they don't have to be HEAVY! Ask too much of any speaker and it'll go 'blah', whether or not the cab's made of foamcore composite or concrete. Alex
I agree with this I had an EA NM410 very light but very qide, very difficult to carry, then I have my Matamp 4x10 (Non Neo) a lot heavier than the EA but easier to move as it isn't as wide.
-
Older drivers with ceramic magnets can weigh two to four times what newer neo magnet drivers weigh. Cabs made of cheap particle board or MDF will be heavier than those made of plywood. Well braced cabs made of 12mm plywood will weigh less than poorly braced cabs made of 18mm plywood. Birch is heavier than Poplar. There are many reasons why some cabs are light and some weigh a ton. But weight alone isn't an accurate predictor of how any speaker will sound.
Very true but I assume you'd agree the quality/density of wood is important as well not just the thickness.
