Less expensive Radial Stereo J48

I think a lot of amps now have some form of HPF built in, some more agressive than others. The Thumpinator operates at around 30hz or something like that and I'd be surprised if many modern heads aren't filtering somewhere around there already.
-
It's been about two decades since I last matched amps to cabs based on watts, besides you can blow a driver with an "underpowered" amp if you're an idiot, I have a knacked Deltalite I can stick in the post if you don't believe me. £60 when I bought it and £120 when I looked for a replacement, there was a lot of swearing involved mostly directed at myself.

Exactly this, Fender make Fendery things because that's what people will buy, to the point where they'll pay a massive premium just for that name on the headstock. They're a heritage/legacy brand like Gibson so there's no point in angering shareholders by producing something your target market won't buy and the people that would be interested won't pay the Fender tax anyway.

Peavey also do good budget 6 strings, I'd be looking at a used Grind or Ibanez SR5xx over a new Squier really.

Weird double post
-
I'm guessing the graphite rods may have worked out cheaper than a 2nd truss rod and the tuners look like generic Gotoh clones with F style elephant ears.
-
I have a box of connectors at home, if you put a pic up of what they look like (inc where the locating ridges are) I can see if they're compatible. You can also buy Ibanez preamp spares online from Banzai, Meinl etc, think Thomann did them at one point. Assuming the bypass connector is 2 pin it may just be a simple switch so that should be easy to rig up to a push/pull if your current volume pot is just a standard potentiometer. Spares from the other Ibanez 3EMP preamps might fit, the mid and mid freq switch were sometimes linked with two separate connectors so you might need to buy that whole assembly.

Inexpensive 5 string bass with stainless steel frets?
lemmywinks replied to tretim's topic in Bass Guitars
The Ibanez EHB 1005 and 1005MS will have stainless steel frets and are lightweight, usually around £500-£600 used. -
I did look at that, Thomann have a B Stock BV1001T for around the same price as the HB. Looked at the manual though and it doesn't seem to list the frequency point for the low eq. Is the comp ok on it? AFAIK the T version is a Streamliner clone, is there much difference between that and the M version other than a lack of preamp tubes ,corresponding gain control and the difference in mid frequency options?

That's good news, I loved my old Hartke gear. I gig with IEMs and rehearse straight into a desk so that sounds ideal. The only snag is the TC head being red matches my cab and the HB doesn't!
-
I don't want any drive at all, I like the feature set of both amps but had heard the preamp was a little uninspiring on the 800B, I mainly use the pre on my basses really so not a massive issue. Is the DI out ok, no noise etc?

Been considering a small but high powered head for rehearsals and possibly the odd fill in gig I may have coming up with a different band and have been looking at either the Harley Benton 800B Quilter clone or a used BH800. Would also free up my small home rig to lend to a mate who is struggling at the moment. Anybody had experience of these two, particularly how the preamp sections are voiced? Do they both have bags of power as their ratings suggest or are they made of lies and deceit? Are there any other cheap, high powered yet tiny heads around? At the moment I have a TC BH250 which is fine for low volume, however my PJB C8 Lite cab is a bit thirsty in terms of power and I think it needs more juice to get going, there also isn't much going on in the <80hz area with the little TC and the bass and mid -/+ eq points points are far more appealing on its big brother. I emailed HB and they claim the Block 800B has no HPF, low end boosts at 100hz though compared to 80hz boost and 50hz cut with the TC. I did go to put a wanted ad up but the site doesn't let me any more so if anybody has a used BH800 let me know please!

The plastic knobs don't make sense on a cramped control plate, I swapped mine out for metal flat topped ones which were narrower/taller for the dual concentric pots. Much better for making adjustments.
-
If you don't like the string spacing then try something else with a wider/narrower spacing. I went through a ton of 5ers before I realised 18mm+ is what I need. I'm not fussy with a 4 but it makes a lot of difference with the extra string(s) IMO. Practice floating thumb technique or your own adaptation of it, particularly if you're playing passages above the bottom two strings (heresey I know). As already said play your 5 exclusively for a while, it won't take long to adapt but going back and forth early on might increase the chances of hitting the wrong string at a gig.

Is this 1993 Squier Standard Precision Bass any good?
lemmywinks replied to Leo2134786's topic in Bass Guitars
I've just stuck a set of Grover clones on my Aria STB (the 5 string JB DX model), might have to fill and redrill some screw holes but they're a big upgrade over the stock ones and still very cheap: https://northwestguitars.co.uk/products/4-x-bass-tuners-open-back-for-right-handed-fender-squier-jazz-precision-bass -

Thomann are still knocking out the P/J Sadowsky MetroExpress basses for £339 btw: https://www.thomann.de/gb/misc_4_string_basses.html?manufacturer[]=Sadowsky&gk=GIEBS4&sp=solr&category[]=GIEBS4&cme=true&filter=true Check FB/eBay etc for a used bargain on a Sire P5 or Squier CV 60's. If you like shorter scales there's a Sire U5 in the classifieds on here for £300 -
Is this 1993 Squier Standard Precision Bass any good?
lemmywinks replied to Leo2134786's topic in Bass Guitars
Tuners look meh. Nothing wrong with the Aria STB btw, they're solid basses and a bit under appreciated. I had a later Standard Jazz made in Indonesia which was a really nice instrument, would be looking to pay no more than £150 for one though. Can get a lot of bass for circa £300 these days, unless you play it and it really speaks to you then I'd look elsewhere. -
Have these literally gathering dust which may be of use to someone. J pickup working, black cover 194mm, unknown origin (white + wire). P pickup working, black cover from old Kay sandwich body P copy if memory serves. J pickup not working, black cover 192mm (yellow + wire), no idea of origin. P pickup not working, white cover assume this is from my old Sue Ryder. 2 band G&B preamp with pots, working but the blend pot was scratchy last time I used it. From a Shine SB525TA I think, not the best preamp but can get a bass up and running. All pickups are well used so expect some marks to the covers etc, the Kay P pickup has some rust as it's ancient. Maybe you have a bass you really don't like or need a dummy pickup, could put them in a drawer for a decade like I did, loads of fun to be had really. Dunlop Straplocks in black, ancient things that haven't been used in years and instead have been taking up space in my drawer. Seems to work ok, fed a bit of oil in them and they're smooth enough. Staggering price drop of £1 down to £7 delivered.

I tried the Shuttle 3.0 when they sold it with the 1x10 cab with the head in the detachable cage thingy, this was before mini cabs were popular and it made me buy a tiny 1x10 bass rig. I do like all the features on some TC amps, I wish more manufacturers would incorporate that line of thinking into their designs. Ashdown have some clearance Rootmaster 800 heads at the moment, think they're usually around £800: https://ashdownmusic.com/products/like-new-rm-800-evo-ii-head

I think that's just how those amps sound tbh, they have plenty of volume so loud isn't an issue, there's just lots of APM and digital trickery to get there so the more powerful version would essentially be more of the same. Plenty of people like that baked in sound but plenty of people don't. There's a few micro heads on the market that use the ICEpower 700AS1 modules, Quilter, Markbass etc do them. I've been looking at the Harley Benton Block 800B recently as my rehearsal cab is a bit too power hungry for my little TC BH250. There's also a Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 in the classifieds:
-
The RH series have a baked in sound which seeks to emulate old school valve warmth and has always on compression, if you're after clarity then you probably won't get it with the RH750. The actual power of the RH750 is most likely less than half their stated rating as well, can't remember the exact figure from when they got found out originally but I suspect if you search you'll find it, not that it matters in terms of the sound and volume being enough for you. EDIT - apparently both the RH450 and RH750 are 236w amps.
