I really don't get the whole "Ric sound" thing, the ones i've played have sounded nothing like what i have come to expect, that's with me playing them and their owners gigging them. The best "Ric" sound i've had from a bass was attained with an RD Artist. I also find them uncomfortable basses to use btw, the little quirks are, for me, serious design faults.
 2.
.... its because of the singular, characteristic sound of Ricks - precisely the same reason that the likes of Chris Squire and Bruce Foxton still play them today I am guessing
I though Bruce Foxton played Precisions more nowadays? In most of the recent clips i've seen of him he's playing a Fender, still gets that same sound though!
 3.
A sensible way forward may well be to keep the SWR combo at the rehearsal room (where there are stairs...) and replace everything else with a suitable lightweight head + cab, or maybe a decent combo.
When you have one lightweight compact cab and a head that fits in your lead bag stairs really aren't an issue any more! When i rehearse i take all my gear up 2 flights of stairs and have a free hand to carry other peoples' kit. The heaviest thing i take is my bass!
 4. The endpin jack is probably the least invasive stable solution, plus it doesn't spoil the look of a very bonny unique bass. Must admit i'm a little jealous! I have a dead simple vol/tone unit wired to the piezo in mine (an old fretless Ozark) and tbh i prefer it to pretty much every battery equipped acoustic bass i've used, especially on a fretless. I just roll the tone right off and it's spot on. You may want to get some black nylons on there if the bass/neck will take it, sounds wonderful!
 5. I've been using a Schroeder 1212r with a LMII for years now, never had volume issues and it's always done a great job despite being so small. It's important to realise that everybody will just recommend what they use though! You might want to have a chat with Mr. Claber about what would suit your requirements, i'm sure he could give you great advice about what would suit you. The Barefaced 2x12 looks good.
 6.
They had gosh awful capacitance, and rolled off highs horribly. We used them anyway, being less than knowledgeable about what capacitance was, and just accepted the loss of highs for the convenience.
All the same i used to love my yellow curly cable, i bought is because Devo used to use them and i thought they looked ace!
 7.
We A/B'd some cables together a couple of rehearsals ago. He's right. The difference in tone is very similar to the difference between new/old strings.
The only real way to tell is to do a blind test with every other factor being a constant. Funnily enough whenever this happens nobody can tell the difference! Incidentally i changed to obbm and home made (same components) cables a while ago and didn't really notice much difference. If my PW cables hadn't become unreliable then i wouldn't have got rid. Maybe your VD/Neutrik cables need looking at?
 8.
The straps are wearing out where they join onto the bag. For me to be happy with the repair it would need new straps attaching which means opening up the seams on the bag where they attach and re-sowing. And of course there's no guarantee that it won't happen again. When I find a suitable replacement you're welcome to have the Ritter bag for the cost of postage and packing.
The same thing happened with my acoustic bass bag when i was at Uni, my mum got it repaired at a local place (i now think it was Bacsew who make amp covers) and they attached the straps to the bag itself and sewed another piece of matching material over it. Looks different but you'd never know it covered a repair and has held steady for 10 years now, if anything it's more sturdy than ever. The company i work for manufacture special needs harnesses and belts so i'm now in a pretty good position if my gigbags ever fail! Very generous offer RE the Ritter btw, thanks bud!
 9.
Slightly tangential but my guitarist doesn't like the sound of my Neutrik/VDC cables.
10.
I can say without fear of contradiction [ALL: OH NO YOU CAN'T!] that Dave Gilmour would have been just as successful had he used cryo cable, ordinary cable or rusty barbed wire.
Except David Gilmour's best recordings most likely didn't use any of that cryogenically frozen BS, so history would tell us that he has actually been far less successful when using it. Listening to some of his solo albums it sounds like they froze his musical ability too....
 11.
I bought one of the Quikloks. Used it twice and it broke. Bolt the holds the side that tightens has sheared. I'm not very happy to be honest.
Maybe try one of the Giraffe ones? The mechanism relies on a sprung bolt that secures the angle, quite sturdy but i wish there was one on the other side for peace of mind.
 12.
A couple of you mentioned the desire for a foot switch mute whilst also indicating your love of the Markbass amp, get an LMK the channel footswitch doubles as a mute for either channel as well as allows you to hit both buttons to jump from channel A to B.
Or just buy a tuner pedal?
 13. I don't need anything more than a LMII in terms of tone or volume but i would like a mute switch. Also it would be handy if it were half the size and weight. If i could get that for £200 then winner! I actually really love the Superfly front end so i'd love to see that on the front of a top-spec amp, probably wouldn't buy it though.
 14. Oh yeah, didn't realise that was you! I'm pretty sure i've heard of more HiBeams breaking though, as said the quality control has been iffy. Tbh my favourite strings are Elites Stadium which can still be had for about £15, also check some of the Warwick ones out. Even the really cheap ones are decent. Hartke ones are also well liked on here but not to my taste.
 15. Check the bridge for sharp edges, but you might just have been unlucky with suspect batches of strings. In fact the only set of HiBeams i used did this after about 20 minutes play (i followed the instructions on the packet) and there has been another thread recently: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...;hl=dr+hi+beams Also Geoffbyrne has an the A and E strings for sale if one you broke one of those: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...p;hl=dr+hibeams For 2+2 headstocks but that shouldn't matter on the lower strings.
 16.
Mine has rotary knobs and a 9v battery I think it's about a 1996. Intonation is fine on mine too, has yours got nice wood?
The front and sides are quite plain but the back is really nice, all just laminates though. Mine has seen better days but it's had loads of use - it went with me everywhere during my youth. It's de-fretted now and the dot markers have been removed and filled with rosewood dust. Also it's got a repaired bridge and input jack due to having to bodge it whilst living on a campsite in Devon when i was 18. I think it's been used much more than the average acoustic bass though!
On MTV's unplugged series, most payers chose an acoustic, because they felt they had to for the gig. Other than Nirvana, where i think Krist played an acoustic perefctly
Yeah i always liked the bass sound on those recordings, the bass he played was a huge bodied thing too IIRC. That unplugged album is the reason i bought my acoustic bass although mine doesn't sound as deep.
 17. I also have an Ozark acoustic bass, from the late 90s i think, the one with just passive volume and tone sliders.. No problems with intonation despite the basic bridge, i've had the bronze strings and a few different sets of black nylons on it.
 18. You could always get the straps on your Ritter repaired/replaced? If it's a piece of kit you really like then might as well get some more life out of it. Alternatively sell it to me on the cheap so i can get it repaired at work!
 19. I've cropped and resized those for printing on A4 if anyone is interested. I've printed a set and they're pretty clear.
 20.
It needs a pickguard regardless in my opinion.
With an "R" on it!
 21. One of my favourites too, brilliant track.
 22. Bargain at that price. I had one of these and it was a handy no-fuss bit of kit.
 23. I think i still have an old USB wireless adapter knocking about if i haven't binned it. It's WEP only though so probably won't be suitable for your needs. I also have a laptop PCMCIA wireless card, again WEP only so prob not much use. You're welcome to either/both though. If you get no offers i've used the eBay cheapies from HK/China with no problems.
