I can see both sides of Queen continuing without Freddie and John: on one hand you've lost one of the most instantly recognisable and flambouyant front men in rock music so the bass player sees this and thinks that there's no point in continuing without him;
I don't think that's why John refused to do it. Most accounts i've read cite emotional reasons as he was very close to Freddie and didn't want to do it without his friend. Although i guess there's no official line, it's not like he's going to be doing an interview with Piers Morgan any time soon is it?

Not using this anymore as i have two Aqua One setups. It's a Rio 2ft x 1f x 1ft glass aquarium, good quality with no damage and holds water fine. Comes with a plastic hood and tray which are functional. I'll also chuck in some ornaments which came as a job lot which i don't want - a stone castle and bridge, an urn, shipwreck and treasure chest. Doesn't come with any filtration, pump, heater or lights, just the basic tank. It was last used to house a Salamander so they weren't needed! Collection from Thornton near Blackpool.

Yep, it's a nice cost-effective solution and is light as a feather too. When my EA CXL110 arrived with a dead driver i put a Deltalite in and it sounds lovely but also made the cab about a third of the original weight.

Korg Pandora mini. Anyone tried one yet?

Any ideas on price? Looks handy, want one! -
You can quite easily roll back the mids to tame a 1212, the mid grunt is a mixed blessing as it gives so much perceived volume without cranking the amp, you kind of get used to having it there all the time. On the gigs we did with quality in-ears where the drummer could hear himself (and thus didn't bang the crap out of his kit) i could eq the amp how i wanted without having to worry abour cutting through a dense mix. It's amazing what the 1212r can sound like if you back the low mids off a bit, really modern sounding and sits in a mix really well. It sounded like a cab with a much larger internal volume IMO. Coupled with an Auralex Gramma i could wind the amp up and still get the immense volume without boominess. Err, a bit OT!

I've always been a little dismissive of the LM250 and the lower powered micro-heads, perhaps unjustly as i've never actually tried one. I've always seen them as much less power for not a great deal less than their bigger brothers - the LM250 is about £100 less than the LMII on the used market Are they suitable for gigging with loud drummers? I suppose it only gives an extra ~3db and in most cases the cabs will be the limiting factor. I tried my LMII with my old 410XL and whilst it sounded really good it didn't get to the same volume levels as my Schroeder, however that cab does seem to make any amp sound loud as hell. FWIW i think a vertically stacked 2 x 210XL rig would be pretty sweet

Hohner P Bass copy, red with a white scratchplate - possibly my least favourite combination. It was, oooking back, completely sh1te. I swapped it for a 386 PC setup to do my school and college work on and the lad that got it sprayed it (badly) purple with green flames, it looked awful but i was glad i got rid. Picked up a nice passive Dean for £90 afterwards which was a massive upgrade, sounded miles better. The bad thing is that P copy put me off Hohners for ages so i turned down the B2 Steiny bass i saw in a pawn shop for £80, even though it played really well.

Save up another £50 and get a used LMII off here, they've been around £350 second hand for ages now. I haven't heard of anybody who's tried the Harley Benton but they look extremely similar to the Ibanez Promethean head, the 500w version is only an extra £100 too. I'd be really interested to hear any opinions on that. I suppose Thomann do a no questions return service, just waiting for someone to take the plunge on one! The 250w version at £123 looks too good to be true. Also the LG1000 is an option, especially as the other versions (and the Superfly) are known for being underpowered - really a mismatched preamp issue. You'll still probably need some sort of preamp to get decent volume out of it though so it's a less "micro" option than the others.

I love a good Fuzz and Overdrive, preferably both on at once. Having said that i use a Zoom MiltiFX for silent practice and i always either revert to a RATM type patch or a really squelchy Envelope Filter. In fact i've come up with a few ace bass parts just through jaming with those on.

Been looking for a cheap shoulder bag to carry my Superfly around in and came across this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mens-Army-Retro-Comb...=item53dd4c450c Quite a good fit for my Superfly (out of the bulky casing and with added feet), doesn't rattle around and decent clearance from the fragile buttons. Got enough room for a couple of cables and a kettle lead as well as some bits and bobs like a multitool and small tuner. Strap is flimsy but i replaced it with a spare one from a laptop bag. Just a heads up as i know it's hard to find bags that are a good fit and the official LG one is a bit turd.
But I am wondering, for those that really do pro gigs, like pit work or sessions etc, although a broadway production wouldn't suffer if the bassist played a Cheapo, would you be judged by the guys employing you on your gear before you play a note ?
Still i reckon you could turn up to a session with one of those HK Marleaux copies like the one Shockwave had and everyone would think it was a £2-3k bass. Pic from his FS post here: Cheap doesn't always have to mean a Fender knock-off. That thing looks like a boutique bass, well i supose it was shamelessley copied off one! I think if people don't recognise a brand name and the instrument looks upmarket then they'll automatically assume it to be a luthier job.
To be fair to pretty much all basses sound fantastic through good backline anyhow
Fixed it for ya!

I've played weddings and other functions with a £45 Jazz copy, sounds great through my rig and is nice to play. The most i've ever spent on a bass is £750 and i consider that much more than i needed to spend, it was a nice luxury but there are very few bad basses out there. I'd happily gig a Squier/Aria/Westone/Stagg etc. Jazz for the rest of my days, as long as i didn't have to compromise on amplification.

I seem to be losing the bottom end when I slap!!
The MXR M80 looks a handy bit of kit but a little overkill for my needs I think. I used to have a Catalinbread Serrano Picosso which was a nice little boost but I sold it to Higgie when I bought the other pre-amps as I didn't think I needed it anymore - wrong!! Will check out the Silentfly and Boss GEB7 and see if they would be worth buying, will also try the suggestion of trying to play lighter with the fingers but not sure if I can do that! Also got me thinking how Flea manages live as he has a really heavy finger style but I never noticed any drop out when he changed to the thumb?
The Silentfly one i have isn't the Blue Dragon on his site, totally different circuit - although atrangely it's still called Blue Dragon! Really well built though and the same size as the Catalinbread. The MXR Micro Amp is also a good shout at about £60 new, the M80 comes in at around £80 used though and i know which i'd buy! Maybe use a little compression? That's what i use on my practice rig to get a nice balanced slap sound. -
The problem occurs when the seller does send it and it's a POS and you are out of pocket returning it and potentially in the process the seller tries to rip you off by denying the item has been returned... Did that seem a little bitter and personal?
Ah yes there is always that! The thing is that Overwater auction had quite good, if very shrewdly taken, photos which seemed to show most of the bass in detail. I guess if you rule out every bass that doesn't have hi-res pics showing every minute detail then you won't be bidding on many basses, although that's not really a bad thing! In fact the Fortress i bought had a replacement Ovangkol neck if anyone remembers the thread on it. Nothing that bothers me as it's all genuine Warwick parts (and i really liked the Ovangkol one i already had) but i suppose that might bother some people who really like the Wenge ones. I'd feel cheeky complaining considering what i paid though.
May not be totally representative. Would you give £300 to a seller with low feedback and not 100% at that. The question is does the buyer actually ever get the bass or just a load of hassle and eBay/Paypal claiming! If the seller had high feedback at 100% and actually bothered taking some decent photos they would have got much more. Still a good local pickup for cash purchase if you were close enough to the seller.
Totally, in fact i bought my Warwick Fortress from a zero feedback seller without any pictures, got it for £250. If the seller doesn't send the item it's barely any hassle to claim your money back through Paypal, i'm more than willing to sacrifice a few minutes of my life if i can get something i want for much less than i'd usually pay. In the case of that Warwick Corvette i linked to, it was owned by a friend of a BCer (The Greek), so i'd be more than happy to bid if i could justify it! It was mentioned here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...l=corvette+ebay

Can you not rack it? That would keep it perfectly safe, is cheap and cuts down on all the excess weight and bulk of that big wooden box. Also keeps the original exterior safe from road wear.

Aye i thought they looked pretty sturdy in some of his eBay listings. I particularly like the zip-fronted one (Hisys i think) which is pretty much what i'm after but turned on it's side. Bonus is if he has shop then i can take the cab down and get a better idea of the materials. I actually work in a not too dissimilar field so can provide vehicle-quality parts for strap buckles and anchor plates etc.

Ah cool, cheers for the info bud! Yeah i'm kinda after a cover that retains it's shape when it's taken off as it's basically gonna be used as a shoulder bag with a mini neo cab in so needs to be sturdy. The Hartke ones were excellent quality and the Schroeder one i got off Shaun at SHX (£25 in his sale ) is also top notch. The Roqsolid ones in particular look a bit floppy, although it's really hard to tell as their site is awful and doesn't showcase their product at all. Same with the Hotcovers website, i really wanna get a look at what they make but it's just one dodgy generic photo!
Ahh we've got some of them to cover our EV speakers. They're top quality!
Excellent! Looing at the site i see he does shooting gear and it looks like top quality work, not too many close ups of his cab covers though. The only reason i know about it is that his covers crop up every time i do a local search for "Bass" on eBay, handy to have someone like that just a few miles away. I've messaged him about a quote, i see he does zipped covers which is great as i've enquired about a full padded carry bag with a zipped top and shoulder strap. I'm not too keen on the look of the Roqsolid ones, they look a bit plasticy as do the Hotcovers ones. I know they have really good reputations but i prefer the style i have on my Schroeder cab and old Hartke cabs - kinda like padded neoprene. Annoyingly the Silverstone ones look brilliant. If it comes down to it i can just get a slip cover made for nowt at work so nothing to lose really.
