Jeff Berlin Banned from Talkbass Shock!
lemmywinks replied to Spoombung's topic in General Discussion
And as far as soloing goes, Jeff has always been able to play Jaco under the table, and Jaco knew this.
Well, i know i'd prefer to listen to Jaco's perfectly phrased melody lines from "A Remark You Made" than anything i've heard Jeff Berlin play, guess it's all subjective. I've never understood the whole willy comparison of "playing somebody under the table", for me it's all about expression and not note flurries. This is why some of Jaco's stuff towers above JB's playing, all IMO of course. I've never heard Jeff get particularly exquisite tones from a bass, ever. His playing isn't as moving as some of Jaco's stuff for me. FWIW i'm not a Jeff hater, i like listening to some of his output and he always has something interesting to say. One of those guys who you listen to when he talks, whether you agree with him or not (for whatever reason). I just don't understand why one guy has to be "better" at bass than another! Btw i scored Clive Barker's Jericho for £3 the other day! -

Got to play one of the Teles today. I'd have to say it's definitely a £60 guitar in terms of fit and finish. The fretwork is poor - several high frets, lots of buzzing and choking - the first fret is particularly bad. Also the neck pocket has gaps although it's not shifting so is sound. Ferrules on the back aren't aligned and look sloppy. The neck will also need shimming as it's at an obvious upward angle - alarming considering the fret choking at the first few frets. Intonates ok after 10 minutes of adjustment. It's very frustrating as the fingerboard wood is stunningly figured, it honestly looks like something off a custom instrument. The hardware looks sound too, particularly the bridge saddles which seem better than the usual Tele fare. All in all it looks really nice (it's the white one btw). It needs a full set up and a fretdress, so still quite cheap all things considered but i do wonder what other corners have been cut and whether a used Squier would be a better bet - i think it would tbh. In terms of sounds, it sounds like a decent budget Tele. Not quite enough twang for me but still sounds cool through an old Yamaha 2x12 which has a sweet clean channel. The other mate who bought one is really happy with his, however i'll reserve judgement until i get my hands on it as he's notorious for buying p1ss poor guitars and raving about them! Still, even after playing it and noticing all the issues it has i'm thinking about getting one! Looks very classy, especially for the price.

Saw this seller and thought some people might be interested: http://musical-instruments.shop.ebay.co.uk...6.c0.m270.l1313 He is selling the new style Rockbasses at cheap prices, check this Fortress out: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WARWICK-ROCKBASS-FOR...=item1e616d07d2

Parcel Force see the case as external packaging and won't compensate for it. First mistake by the seller was sending the bass with the worst possible courier! Not how i'd ever ship a bass but some people think it's adequate - i received a pricey bass in just a case with a Porcel Farce sticker on it, no tape and it wasn't even locked. Just shows how different people have different expectations of couriers more than anything. The bass i bought was well looked after, mint condition in fact. Obviously the other BCer thinks the case was a bonus to protect it during shipping and no more, you saw it as part of the deal and bid accordingly (it looks like a nice enough case in the listing IMV). Now i see both sides of the story - and your pics - i think you have good reason to feel shortchanged as the case has been damaged during shipping. Seller negligence has spoiled a good case which you have paid for, not received free as a bonus.
Anybody want to print up a website with these figures for 500w 12" speakers. Its late and I can't find one.. Are they rated RMS at 500..or can just handle 500w amps which is not the same thing to me.
As Alex said "there are four 1x12" bass cabs on the market which can quantifiably handle 500W amplifiers without problem" i assume he meant the latter. Last time i looked on the Barefaced site the cabs were rated in that way, eg 'cab X is designed to be used with 300w-500w amps' etc. A practical way of doing things i think, might have changed it now though i've not been on it in a while. Prob for the best as i can't afford a cab at the moment!
Well,it looks like a very nice case,so what was his problem?
Yeah, nowt wrong with that - i'd be happy with it.
No problem! I'm not posting because I want to sell cabs, they sell themselves, but this 'flat earth society' is just silly. Go back 20 years and I guarantee the same comments were being made about 300W+ amps. And now what's the norm?
Totally understand, my days of huffing huge, heavy bass cabs and PA are long gone. My back is very appreciative of modern speaker and cab design! I always find it amusing that PA gear is basically at the forefront of speaker design and that's what we hear when we go to see a band, yet people are still hung up on buying 8x10 cabs because they see them on stage despite the fact that it's basically a monitor.
The new Acme Low-B112, the new AudioKinesis TC112, the new Barefaced Big Baby and the barely any older Barefaced Midget. Notice a theme? There may be others too!
Cheers Alex!
there are four 1x12" bass cabs on the market which can quantifiably handle 500W amplifiers without problem and whose tone is greatly appreciated by those that own them.
Which ones, if you don't mind me asking? Not being funny, i'm genuinely interested as i want one!

Are some people not destined to play 5-strings?
lemmywinks replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
Just gotta keep trying mate. When I was hunting for a 6er years and years ago, I tried everything but they all felt ...weird. Then one day, got my hands on a Washburn XB600 and it was perfect. Just what I wanted. There's something for everyone out there. Just keep looking and you should end up with a bass that doesnt require re-learning how to play. That is of course, if you're desperate to play 5er! Truckstop
Similar thing for me too. I tried a few 5ers and didn't get on with them at all. I bought a Warwick 5 string because i love their 4 stringers - hated the neck. One of the nicest 5ers i tried was a Stingray, also the OLP i owned was similar. Funny as i don't like Rays as 4 stringers! I'm much more picky with 5 string necks but can feel comfortable on any 4 stringer. I guess with 5ers and 6ers things like neck width, shape and string spacing are more critical as more adjustment has to be made. As with anything, buy used and sell on if you don't like it. -
The fit and finish looks decent, at least this one has been built by someone who can actually use a router. Ugg-er-lee shape IMO, still a country mile away from some of the horror stories flagged up recently. That fretless is still giving me nightmares.
Many people want an easy carry and that is understandable but 900watts and two cabs is getting away from a single carry esp as the main reason people want this is to help their backs. Loading up like you say with a cab in each hand adds up to quite a strain so the people might be able to do it but it puts them into the position they wanted to get away from. I think you'll end up doing light carries and often rather than a full load up. And 900watts on a gig just doesn't make sense. You need to playing stages for that and then you'd never go on stage with most of the lightweight gear here anyway... and you'll have hired help most times. I am not set up to do stages with my gear but I have 400watts and any gig worth doing that needs louder than that will have decent foldback. If I toured, I'd have 750 and 2 castored cabs. Of course, you don't have to use all on tap... but, really..900watts..!!!
But there's compact and light cabs that are comfortable to carry like that - i could quite easily carry a pair of Schroeder 1212l cabs like that for instance. I actually agree about 900w being a bit of overkill but hey, it's headroom - as bass players we love headroom! I get on fine with the LMII/1212r rig down there \/ but extra power is always handy. I imagine it would be a great match for cabs which need a lot of juice too.

They're shifting the standard Corvettes over to Korea and releasing some Korean versions of sig basses, as you've found! The Rockbass range is brought up to spec and are now lovely to look at, much like a German Warwick in fact. As with the last lot of Rockbass 'Vettes, there are different price brackets (Basic, Premium etc.) Shame the prices aren't lower though.
hmmmm... I'd like to see and hear and 12" or 15" speaker handling 500-600w of bass on its own so do rather agree that a micro amp for the carry factor is rather a load of nonsense...ditto the cabs.
Well it means you can put the head in a laptop bag and stick it over your shoulder rather than carrying it. Compare it to a big old Ampeg in a flightcase which is a two hand carry - so it'll save you a trip. My Schroeder is a one hand carry and it does big gigs on it's own with a 500w amp, loads of people gig with a single compact etc. Imagine - bass in gigbag, head in laptop bag, leads in shoulder bag, one lightweight cab (2x12 etc.) in each hand - one trip from car to stage and you've got a loud as hell rig!
...so I've been paying out something in the region of £600 a month!
Crikey! When you convert that into bass purchases it could quickly turn into feline resentment! Well, ex missus resentment....
This upsets me. Generally the feedback has been good with only a couple of people reporting bad experiences. I was planning on a tele but I'm now worried it'll not be worth the £59, what to do...
I've put a few mates onto these, one ordered the Tele (should be here today) and the other got the Strat. The fret wire issue is worrying, still the loaded body will fetch a few quid on fleabay if it's no good. I've nicknamed the Strat the Lollercaster as when my mate was opening it he cut his hand open (don't know how but he did!) so he has a new guitar he can't physically play and has missed practice this week!
Mick Quinn from Supergrass played his Ibanez Blazer bass.
According to an interview i read the natural Ibanez he always used was his first bass which he never felt the need to replace as it sounded spot on. Also his main recording amp (for their 1st 2 albums anyways) was an old Carlsbro combo - again his first amp. So the massive bass sound you hear on their albums comes from kit you'd find in a pawn shop in the early ninetes!

Subtle, delicate, tasteful, under-stated
lemmywinks replied to Happy Jack's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
This is just down the road from me, the seller has previously sold other butchered novelty tat on eBay which has been flagged up here before. He seems to have a habit of acquiring cheap instruments, ruining them and selling them as "one offs" even though they are barely usable. -
One thing i would say about Warmoth necks is that they can be heavy (they have steel support rods in them) and might change the balance of the bass for the worse. This wasn't an issue on mine as the body was a hefty chunk of mahogany but it might affect the VMJ. Also it felt a lot chunkier than what i'd call "Jazz width", i think that's quite a common complaint with the Warmoth J necks/. Another thing - the blocks on the maple necked VMJ are stick on ones IIRC which may explain their appearance.

Black nylon Rotosound strings - Sue Ryder P-bass
lemmywinks replied to mcnach's topic in Bass Guitars
They're not my favourite nylons but they are nice and not too pricey. They are thick due to the nylon coating but not especially high tension, the thickness may be a problem on the SR basses as they're string through and the bridge may not accomodate them. Also the ferrules on those basses might be too small (i think someone has already had this problem) - they're easily replaced though. I had to modify my acoustic bass at the bridge to accept these strings - it's a problem common with most nylon coated strings though. EDIT: Another thing - you may need to modify the nut slots for these strings. I just bought another nut to use with them as they're cheap enough. -
. Warmoth parts are very nicely made - generally better than the far Eastern fleabay stuff,
I'd say that's a bit of an understatement! The quality of the body and neck on my old Warmoth J was head and shoulders above pretty much every Fender style bass i've seen. The wood (Walnut and Pau Ferro) was stunningly figured and faultless. I got it used for a very good price and sold it for even less (£360) so they do lose a lot of value. It's new owner described it as "a work of art". Warmoth isn't the cheapest route to go down but the quality is assured - it's really great stuff.
i really have been trying to resist but not neutering on moral grounds! i think with all the unwanted pets we have in a so called animal loving country and the vast numbers destroyed because the charities are overwhelmed is proof that worrying about tibbles balls and how he wont be able to strut his stuff has back fired in a big way. lets hope they dont reach sexual maturity and multiply even further! i hope you manage to find a suitable home for them and that they get to have a long but sterile life. and blow a raspberry at the ex for me if you see her. thats the nicest way of putting it anyway. ad
Yep totally agree. Another thing i don't understand is people who buy kittens from pet shops. Why the hell do people still encourage kitten "farming"? Most animal sanctuaries have kittens as they get pregnant female cats dumped on them. When we went to get Mrs. Lemmywinks' cat they had pens full of kittens - all needing a home. A big pen with about 20 tabby kittens in it all meowing and climbing the mesh to get to you is probably the cutest thing imaginable! Both of our moggies were in need of a home and we were only too glad to take them, especially my little tortie as she's a total idiot.

The bassist from Jefferson Airplane. Great original player and active circuit pioneer. Also comes across as a very nice bloke.

Well, it's different... Can't help thiking he could have made 2 really nice basses from all that wood though. Tempted to message him and ask if there's any neck dive!
