1.
yeah been checking out the barefaced series, looks good just worried that an 8 ohm cab through a 300w into 4 ohm head won't be loud enough, may contact him and find out, it's gotta hang with 2 guitarists and a drummer and don't really want to spend more than £500, the schroeder looks good but can I get them in England, with all the import tax etc would end up costing a bomb!!
The Schroeders are 4ohm (and hella loud) and can be bought from SHX music: http://www.shxmusic.com/ Alternatively just wait until one comes up for sale on here, they appear quite often and go for about £350+ Shaun at SHX also sells the covers too which are handy
2. A Schroeder 1212l will do the job, there's not many small, light one cab solutions if you play in a loud band with a heavy-handed drummer but my 1212r has always been more than enough. A Compact will also be worth a look, quite a few people on here use one on it's own Size is a big consideration for me, not just for transport but also for home storage A friend of mine gigs regularly with the Markbass 2x10 wedge combo, he loves it and it's replaced his big rig. That also will be worth trying as you'd have no head to cart around
3.
Seriously, is there any need for that?
Yes.
4. Can we start a petition to get Mark King's right arm amputated? Failing that just his thumb would do! Should i run away before the nuthuggers start crying?
5.
woudnt touch an LDV if you paid me, youd spend more time waiting for the RAC/AA and thumbing for a lift to gigs
Our lwb deisel high-top lasted for years with minimal work, bought for £450 from the local auction! Most reliable van we had
6. These are ace, our guitarist had the 30w 1x12 combo and it was the best guitar amp i've heard. Sound good at any volume but can go balls loud too
7. Nice! I keep thinking about selling my Zoot but every time i get it out of the case i realise how good it is! Is this in the Zoot porn thread?
8.
Watching those vids one after the other MK looks like he's thinking "Ha! I've got a thumb and you haven't. Look what I can do with it"
Technically speaking the other guy does have a thumb...
9.
I decided to watch that one, but it was a right plodder. As for him "single handledly" owning Mark King, I don't think he quite does that...in any sense!
He owned him in the sense that i could actually watch the whole video without baulking at the 80s cheeser spoiling an otherwise harmless song. Bump your mids up, ease off the treble and ffs give that thumb a bloody rest! MK is a nice little fella from the interviews i've read but whenever he gets that thumb out - eeurgh!!!
10. The guy on the OP totally owning Mark King.....single handedly? (sorry!)
11.
The worlds most expensive letraset with a cheapo bass attached?
Yep! Looks suspiciously like a Shine with a logo (and a few zeros) applied. The body shape, neck pocket and no-name pups (with 4 screws at each corner) all look like features i've seen on Shine/Chase etc. basses The original owner has left the country according to the listing, probably enjoying a nice holiday with the £4930 he made by flogging it to the eBay seller! Could be wrong though, might be a bargain!
12. Two things you'll need: 1 - A DI box or preamp/pedal with a DI out 2 - Decent monitors so you can hear youself I've happily done gigs like that before, some gigs i've done with proper audio companies doing the FOH the amp has been a token gesture. Just as well really as the biggest audio company round here thinks a knackered old Trace combo with a rattling grille and a dodgy power stage is a sufficient bass amp for outdoor festivals!
13.
Hmmm... ditch the guitarists. Is it any wonder us bass players have so many back problems having to lug around twice as much gear as our guitar counterparts just to be heard, because they are a. Selfish b. Stupid C. Incapable of compromise. Any guitarist worth his weight in **** understands the importance of calving out his space in the spectrums of frequency AND amplitude.
+1 Nothing more annoying than "musicians" who insist on chasing their rockstar dreams by turning their new toys up too loud. Unless you're playing Wembley then a 10-30w valve combo is more than loud enough. Our old guitarist played a huge ballroom with an Orange Rocker 30 Maybe ask them if they'll buy you a few pairs of fitted earplugs costing a few hundred each every year to compensate? It may seem like you're being a killjoy but seriuously, tell them to use the knob marked "volume" in a counter clockwise direction for once. If they can't get "their sound" at lower volumes then they've bought the wrong kit, not you
14. Or, rather than cart all that gear around and go to all that trouble rigging it up, why not just flog it all and buy one capable, loud, efficient rig? These days a decent head with one sensitive cab (two tops) will shift enough to play with the loudest of drummers. Also tell you're guitarists to turn down! Just my2p EDIT: Poor spelling and grammar, tsk!
15. If it is the nut then you can do a temporary bodge by dropping a blob of superglue on there to build it up a bit. I've bought a few used basses where a previous owner has obviously wanted to string it with telephone cable and completely butchered the nut, fitting a new one isn't difficult and they're really cheap
16. Having a ton of bass gear really started to get on my nerves so i've been slowly downsizing. My gig rig (a Schroeder 1212r and LMII) lives at my parents' house as i'm not using it at the moment, even when i do have it at home it's such a small compact rig that it's easy to stick under the stairs My Hartke A70 is at my keys player's house so my only rig here is a Superfly and a tiny EA 110 cab - the missus has makeup cases bigger than that! I just have a spare 1x10 homebuild cab to sell and then that's it, absolutely minimum gear!
17.
How are you liking the Superfly? I'm thinking of buying one as a backup to my RH450. My current backup is an Ashdown MAG250 which I'm happy with, but because of its size I very rarely take it with me, which defeats the "backup" concept.
I like it yeah, i'm always hesitant to recommend them to people though because of the issues they have. If you manage to get a good one (it's a bit of a lottery) then they can be very useful. They have very specifc uses tbh due to the way the power section works. As it's 2 seperate outputs giving 250w @ 4ohm or 180w (i think) @ 8ohm each you really need to use them with 2 cabs, pref 4ohm ones, if you want gig volume. They can go pretty loud with 2 decent cabs but with one you might struggle. I mainly use mine with a little home build cab or my EA CXL110 (with a Deltalite), with the EA it's loud enough for practice and makes for a tiny, featherweight rig On the positive side they have a great front end, the digital eq idea is fantastic and really useful. There's loads of low end on tap and used with a bit of compression (i really like the compression on this head btw, it's grown on me a lot) it's really clear and tight. You can get some truly excellent sounds out of this head, such a shame Ashdown dropped the idea instead of sorting the quality control out. It's also very handy as you can use pretty much any combination of cabs with it as it's 2 x 4ohm inputs. So if you turn up to a gig or practice and there's a cab provided chances are you can hook it up in addition to the cab(s) you've brought Tbh there are other options but none at the price of a used Superfly as they go for around £100 (they were £200 new unless bought early on). You need to be aware of their limitations and potential problems but if you can make use of one they're great sounding little amps
18.
Sorry! If it helps; if you find an Amber one I'll let you have my Green one... and I'll get it defretted.
I'll get on it right away, just set an eBay search for "Bolin bass - 4 string - Amber - BIN under £40". Not holding my breath....
19. You really are going to have to stop posting pics of that green Bolin WH, every time i see it i want one but can't afford it. I love the headstocks on those, a fretless version would be my dream bass Very cruel!
20. All the same, his advice was technically incorrect. The fact that the amp blew that day was most likely pure coincidence, unless it's one of the few SS amps with an output transformer
21. Have a free bump, Chris is a great guy to deal with!
22. A transistor amp is a solid state amp. Any amp which doesn't have an output transformer (ie pretty much all SS amps) is fine without a load. If your tech said that i'd be worried about trusting him with any other amp repair
23. Very gracious of you there Beedster, good lad! Warmoth necks aint cheap, they still charge $80 extra for a lined fretless neck, but they are fantastic quality. Used prices are pretty bad though as i found out when trying to flog mine - it took about a year!
24.
I wouldn't risk by putting an amphead or whatever and a bass in a gigbag that doesn't have enough padding between two, and those cheap bags don't seem to be protective.. You wouldn't want a broken neck or pots, would You, Lemmy?
Well the amp is a Superfly (used value around £100) and the bass will be either an Aria Jazz i bought for £45 or my homebuild Jazz (parts around (£140) so you can understand why i don't wanna drop any more on a gigbag! Tbh it's just so i can leave everything in one bag for weekly practice, i often have very little time as i'm on dad duty most evenings so i'm always in a rush when getting my gear together The OGC one listed above looks alright quality, i suppose i could always get a sheet of foam sewn under pvc to the inner section to protect the bass, i can get that done at work for free if i ask the girls nicely!
