1. I was given this a while ago with some laptop spares i bought.

AFAIK it's working (it came off a knackered motherboard), i have no PC to test it with as i only deal with and use laptops

It's an Nvidia FX5500 by Inno3D, it is 8x (although i think also 4x compatible) and has 256mb RAM.

It has the following written on the sticker:

    Inno3D
FX5500-8X W/256mb CRT DVI PC AGP

Might be useful for someone with a slightly older system looking to play a few games or something
    Free to good home!

  2.
Having played both, I'd go for the Stagg. One of my pupils has one & it really nails the EUB sound, especially at the price point. Red is seriously cool, too.
+1

A Stagg with some foam wedged underneath the strings can do a great DB impression, i disagree with the colour choice though, i thought it looked horrible in red. Black all the way!

They come up for around £220 - £270 2nd hand too

  3. +1 to all the above. I've been guilty of more than my fair share of howlers, some on quite high profile gigs.

One of my worst gigs was at a private party for the Nolan sisters, i was mixing it big with such luminaries as Alvin Stardust and the fat one from Blue :)
Dropped about 4 absolute clangers, the rest of the band noticed and as there were quite a few musicians in the audience they noticed too, felt like a right tw@t.

Maybe a quick call to the bandleader with a quiet apology would show them you're being professional and can admit when you've made mistakes? It's not about the mistakes you make, rather how you deal with them.
I'll never forget going to see the Chili Peppers at Manchester and seeing Flea drop in a couple of bum notes, scuffed a few as well. Happens to all of us!

  4. Hartke have a little 1x12 300w cab, switchable between 8 and 4ohms:

Ibanez also have the Promethean cabs and combos:
    http://www.thomann.de/gb/ibanez_p110c_promethean.htm

4ohm and 500w, should be ok with a LMII

  5. The head should slide out after removing the screws on top of the combo, you'll probably need to make a lid for it though as i don't think Hartke put them on the amps in combos. It'll just be the standard HA3500 in there, great amps!

Don't take a saw to it, cabs are specifically designed and tuned to give good results. Sticking 2 speakers in a box will probably sound disappointing.

Your best bet is to flog the combo and buy what you need i reckon
There's 2 Hartke 2x10 Transporter cabs on sale here for £120 the pair, have a look at those maybe?

    EDIT: Here- http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=78560

  6. Happened to me a while ago, think it was a dodgy lead as one of my Planet Waves failed a couple of gigs later.

Only happened the once in over a year of solid gigging, i always DI from m MXR M80 anyway so even if something did fail i'd still have bass through the PA

  7.
This is how I would had designed it :):)
That's better. I'd still omit the cheesy "Bass-o-meter" logo though, makes it look mmore like a cheap kids' toy than a pedal

  8. Parcelforce = no. I received a bass via PF48 and it took nearly a week,

I use Interparcel as they're cheap and extra insurance doesn't cost the earth.
Only had one problem with them, when i received a cab and the crossover had developed a fault, the risk you take i think. All couriers will handle boxes quite roughly and i've used them since

    Parcelbee are also very cheap

  9.
heh, oh dear...

Im the same as most - that being a bounce off unless im double thumbimg (or trying to, Ive only started learning recently!)

However i always slap thumb down, even though i wear my bass unfashionably high. Just feels more natural for me!
How do you double thumb with a thumb down technique? I'd always struggled with it that way as i'm a thumb-downer too

  10. I can agree too.

Basses like that are purely a luxury, like saying how can you spend X amount on a car when you can get one for half the price, it's being a member of an elite club whilst at the same time paying a master craftsman a lot of money for building you an excellent example of a product.

I have 3 great basses, all worthy of big gigs. One was £598 new, the others were £250 and £750 2nd hand.
I tend to lust after more standard basses (Warwicks, nice Jazzes etc.) and personally think Gus basses are ugly as hell, i wouldn't play one if they were £400 because i'd look a tw@t.

For those that like 'em though nothing else will do

  11. I think there are vastly different sounding black Russian muffs, going by what people say about them. Mine has tons of low end and is the best sounding muff i've had, if not the most practical due to powering issues and the size of the thing.

I modded it to accept a boss-style plug but still have to use a polarity reverse cable as it's C+ve, i think you still have to use a seperate power supply due to earthing issues?

I use a ZVex Mastotron as it still has the great sound and retains bass but is about a 3rd of the size

  12. In fact there's a thread on there about putting an Aguilar OBP-3 into a 'wick:

    http://forum.warwick.de/10-warwick-basses/...p-3-preamp.html

  13.
Because it allows the cable company to "add value" and so increase its prices and profit margins. When they started out, Chord used to make no-nonsense, well priced cables. Now they sell speaker cables for £1,000 a pair, which gives you an idea of their business model. By the way, virtually none of these cable companies actually makes its own cable or plugs; they just assemble the bits and market them.

Any company can assemble a good quality 6m instrument cable and get it to market for around £25 - Neutrik jacks, a proven pro cable like Klotz, Belden, Canare - or even less using a good quality 'no brand' cable. From a performance point of view, there is no point spending much more than this - you're not going to make a better performing cable. If you do want to spend more, your extra money should go into very high build quality and QC, but chances are that what you'll get for your money is audio jewelry and - quite possibly - an inferior cable.

When marketing is more important than engineering you get things like Chord's cream outer jacket (I can't think of a worse colour for a cable that's going to spend most of its time on the floor) or the solid core of the Evidence cable, which not only makes the cable stiffer than it needs to be but also makes it much more susceptible to breakage.

Much of what is written about 'exotic' cables is written in good faith by people who really believe what they say and are convinced they have actually heard improvements from their expensive bits of wire. Unfortunately, they are often listening with their eyes.
Massive +1 to all of that.

I wonder if anyone who champions these exotic cables could pick them out in a blindfold test?

    I'm guessing not
