1.
I've tried some markbass stuff before. I found them quite clinical sounding but that was all combo stuff will probably have to look around though!
Try the heads through a different cab. Mine goes through a Schroeder 1212r and it can do clean and hifi but also dirties up nicely with my MXR. With the Schroeder you can whack loads of low mids through it for a grittier rock tone.

  2. If i lived up 4 flights of stairs i'd sell my bass gear and take up the harmonica!

Seriously, Markbass/Genz and a single efficient lightweight cab that can handle plenty of lows (Barefaced etc.) I'd invest in a decent quality bag for your head and leads too. Being able to load your gear in/out in one trip is a great feeling!

  3. I'd imagine the programmable Sansamp would be a decent option as you can save settings (3 i think?)

I use an MXR M80 for OD, clean boost/eq and DI. I then use a ZVEX Mastotron for fuzzier moments. I recently used this with the M80 and it sounds brilliant, like a 3rd pedal in it's own right (in fact it's the best sound i've had!). Really all i need is the M80 and another pedal to mix it with and i have 3 distortion sounds

  4. Tried this before my MXR M80 last night, they sounded excellent together! Couldn't have imagined a better combination of grind and all out fuzz. Amazingly it sounded controlled and clear too!

I'm thinking this pedal is definitely a keeper, it handles everything i throw at it and takes up a third of the pedalboard space of my Big Muff

  5. I have a Mighty Mite P neck on my bitsa Jazz and it's very nice. Only mwahs when i tell it to!

Not sure i prefer the ebanol to wood, it's marking up already and i was told it would last ages. Sounds very natural though

  6. Could have a butchers at this:

Pretty much the same thing for half the price!

  7. Ah i thought it would just be the same model.

If it's anything like the one featured on the site this has surely got to be an absolute steal. The Stagg and Thomann ones are over £300

  8. Going a bit (more) OT, but just to put things into perspective:

We did a wedding recently for £500. Turned up, set up, easy. DJ walks in and asks straight away if he can use our PA. We say no so he uses the hotels rig. After messing about with crackly leads (all through the house PA, so loads of loud popping and generally not-very-pleasant sounds, for about half an hour he asks us to cut our soundcheck short so he can continue to mess about. Eventually, as guests were starting to arrive, our guitarist (professional sound engineer) had to help him set his CD player up as he didn't know what he was doing.

Later found out he "earnt" £300, couldn't even be arsed to bring his own PA

Think we're in the wrong trade?

  9.
When we first started doing the social clubs we were getting more than we were in pubs at the time.
After a few months we started asking for a bit more and for about 4-5 months got no work, from any off them.
These were all through an agent and he did warn us that the clubs pay peanuts but there are loads of band that will do them if we don't want them.
After a few months of doing nothing we agreed to go and do them at the going rate.
So that was another situation where the band either take it or leave it. We know of at least one 10 piece band that also play the same clubs and they get the same money as us. They do costume changes, the full works.
As they said to us at the time, they are working 7 days a week doing this. If they turned down the gigs they don't eat.
I'm just glad I'm only in a 4 piece band.
Too true.

A venue near me will only pay £300, fine for a little pub but this place is a big modern venue that makes a killing every night (restaurant upstairs, club downstairs). Felt a bit guilty telling them to stick it when there's an 8 piece band on every month who never complain

Still, they should get a proper job! :)

  10. There was a recent thread about this with loads of good info on

Try MXR M80 or EBS Multidrive

  11.
It's a Korean built DB95.
They are generically referred to as "Tropical" basses because they were built in the period when Dean guitars was owned by a company called Tropical Music.
    They were manufactured between 1991 - 1996.
He's right!

I had the 4 string passive version of this (there was an active and a fretless version IIRC). I paid £90 for it, lost the backplate then sold it for £45 and 5 sets of Elites. WIN!

Mine sounded pretty poor, had the same forearm rout and (very badly done) inlays. I've got an old bass book with the model numbers in, can fetch it if required

I've not since seen inlays done as bad as on my old Dean, more filler than wood!

  12. I was thinking of these gear4music ones, cheapys will do me. I'm not about to gig it just yet (it's too big and i'm lazy) plus i don't have £100 to spend on strings at the moment (or ever!)
