  1. A cheap "fix" for a dying Micro USB port is to get one of the magnetic cables with the corresponding adapter which permanently lives in there. I have a couple of old devices I use these with to keep them alive and save wear and tear on the port. Some are charge only and some have the data lines present.
  2. Tried the MW-1 again straight from my Fishman Platinum Stage DI set to pre eq, was much better but the P2 (or rather the AE knockoff which was within easy reach) was at its limit. Tried it again through my Soundcraft Notepad 5 and could get ok results, however directly comparing the wireless sound to wired it seems to compress a bit and lose some low end. The distortion is weird, doesn't sound like clipping but just an intermittent bit of background inteference fuzz on louder notes. Much more prominent right after changing channels and then settles down a bit, will try on the XR18 as I suspect the power supply on my Soundcraft may be on its way out as if I leave it plugged in (there's no power switch) when not in use it produces an annoying whine. Failing cap or something?
  3. It does "work" but there were issues with the signal when I tried it at home, like little dips in volume and momentary distortion which I attributed to the signal incompatibility. Had a similar experience when trying to use a wireless guitar dongle that didn't like active or high output basses. I've had worse monitoring at gigs tbh but it wasn't ideal! It works fine with a mic.
  4. That's what I found when I looked, the cheapest I found was £80. Might as well just get that Alto and let our singer carry on using the Lekato wireless for her mic.
  5. This one as well but its 2.4ghz: https://www.thomann.co.uk/the_t.bone_free2b.htm
  6. I was looking at those, couldn't find a 40db version cheap enough to chance it (they were about £80) but didn't know you could daisy chain them. I did try it with my small desk dropping the signal way down until it was workable but the P2 doesn't have enough power to compensate for this so it's just too quiet without another preamp in there. Can get these for around £80 and they claim to be line level friendly so might just treat myself to one for Christmas: https://www.altoprofessional.com/products/stealth-1
  7. Is there a 5.8ghz XLR dongle that caters for line level signals out there at all?
  8. Yeah they aren't a workable solution for a line level at all, the P2 can't compensate for the signal they need. We just use them for our singer's vocal mic.
  9. I have the Lekato version of that and it doesn't seem to play nicely with the line level outputs of our desk going into my Behringer P2, have you used them successfully with a belt pack rather than just a mic?
  10. PMT sell it as a Tourtech so price is about right: https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/tour-tech-abs-hard-case-for-electric-bass-guitar You can get generic ABS cases for £66 on Thoman and DV24/7, they probably all come from the same factory.
  11. Got some random bits to clear out: 2 x Warwick dual concentric black knobs, code 196577 1 x Warwick single knob, code 196573 2 x MEC 220k pots, code 82220 (I think, obscured by some solder) 1 x MEC 500k pot, code 85500 Got the pots with my old Warwick Fortress so assume the seller had bought them as a passive wiring harness but never fitted them. They're used and will need a bit of a clean. Knobs are in very good condition, unsure if they've been used. They certainly haven't in the 10+ years I've owned them!
  12. I would just replace it with likt for like, MEC pots should have codes on them.
  13. I stuck an East Uni Pre 4 knob (£150 off here) in mine, it sounds phenomenal but to be fair it sounds mint in passive mode as well. More than holds its own with my other two gigging basses, both of which were much more expensive and have Nordstrands as stock. If I'd have got the bass with the original pickups and preamp I may have left it as is but it was wired passive with a cheap (but excellent) set of WIlkinsons in there. After I set it up and gave the low B a blast I knew it deserved something a bit better!
  14. Just pulled my STB-JB-DX 5 string out for a play tonight, keep forgetting just what a fantastic budget bass it is. Such a great neck, same with the 4 string STB-J standard I had. Unfortunately I didn't get the stock pickups with my DX which is a shame as they're surprisingly good. The guitars are impressive too, a mate of mine picked up their fat strat copy for £50 locally with an amp, gigbag and stand when he was getting back into playing, just played great with a super low action and was a great platform for upgrades.
  15. Just spotted this and came here to post it, Andy got in first!
  16. Them being cheap (you can get a 5 string set from NW Guitars for around £30) isn't a factor as they are of decent quality and do their job a lot better than the bottom of the barrel machine heads on the V3. I currently have a set of the Grover clones found on Gen2 V7 basses (they were taken off a Sire funnily enough) on my Aria backup bass and the difference is noticeable, they hold their tuning during a rehearsal and feel much more solid.
  17. Sorry just seen this, pm me the address and I'll stick them in the post!
  18. Better neck is subjective, I much prefer the profile of a Sire 5er to a Squier. The B string is usually extremely good on Sires as well so a point over the Squiers there IMO, plus the pre on the Squier Contemporary is pretty much junk. Comparison here: For that sort of money I'd be looking at a used Gen2 V7 (or V5 if you don't need the preamp) as they have better hardware, I think the V3 still use the low end tuners.
  19. Seeing as he plays appropriately in his other band it's an attitude issue rather than a technique one. He views your band as a throwaway gig where you can put up with him playing in a selfish manner or get someone else in. You're fighting a losing battle here really, a drum screen may look slightly ridiculous in a pub setting but it might be the only way to paper over the cracks and get FoH under control. We have a similar (lesser) issue with a guitarist who has started to bring his amps to gigs and change his settings on a regular basis after a long period of us just using IEMS. I end up doing most of the PA side of things and it just causes issues where the consistently we had is replaced by problems which I don't always have time to fix and can't do much with anyway as he's taken control away from the desk. I don't have any time for selfishness in working bands, same with poor song suggestions that are only put forward because one member wants to play them on stage even though they clear a busy dance floor at every gig. It's the same root cause every time - failed rock star syndrome.

I don't think people pointing out that a certain cheap preamp sounds markedly worse than other cheap preamps is "cork sniffing" but there we go. Ibanez' in house preamps are much better than the Mk pre, probably why they use those now in the basses equipped with the licensed Bart pickups. The Artec I mentioned is £20 and also much better than the Mk pre IMO. To the OP I would see how you get on with it as standard, if you find that a bit lacking then try the pickups wired passive. If you prefer that then think about swapping the Mk preamp out for a better (not necessarily expensive) one.
  21. On my V7 I used a Gotoh404, this has appropriately aligned string through holes but you do need to drill new mounting holes for it. Metal control knobs are also a nice upgrade, generic AliExpress ones are fine.

You don't need an expensive big name brand preamp, just one that boosts and cuts at frequencies you like. Those Artecs are about £20 and I've always liked them. See how you get on with the stock pre first, you might like it. All Ibanez basses are a good bet, built to a high standard with nice materials. Like I said there's a fair bit of depreciation so if that BTB is £400ish then grab it, the current closest spec model will set you back £800-£900. Wouldn't be my first choice at the new price but definitely a good buy at half that.

The Mk pickups are ok, they're reverse split coils and nothing special but sound decent passive IMO. The issue for me is with the Mk preamp, just seems to have boomy bass and harsh treble like a pre from a 90s budget bass. Sounds ok (if a little dark) in isolation but tends to get buried in a mix, if you like how it sounds centred then it might work for you but don't expect to be able to dial in more clean bass. Ibanez also used to use a suspiciously similar sounding pre in some of their older basses, my EDB555 had the same issues despite having a completely different set of pickups and an in house preamp. Frequency chart looks like this, I don't think they changed anything for the Mk2 version: Some people like them but they didn't really work for me in both Corts (who build Ibanez) I had with them as stock. For a cheap budget preamp I slways liked the Artec SE3 series, bass centre frequency is around 80hz so much more musical to my ears.

The 5 string SR is usually 16.5mm, looks like this is adjustable by 1.5mm on the current models, still quite a thin neck though so YMMV. Ibanez did some broad neck 5 string SR basses but you don't see these come up for sale often. Big Breaks are Nordstrand pickups which the current SR600 series use.

Much wider spacing on the BTB (19mm compared to 16.5mm), longer 35" scale length and heavier with it, try both as they have been designed to be completely different to each other. The BTB785 is the 775 with a piezo bridge I think. If so (not 100% on that) it will have the licensed Bartolini Mk pickups and pre which aren't great. Honestly I would look for an Ibanez with Nordstrand, Fishman or licensed CND pickups and their in house preamp, if the SR6xx you're looking at is the one with Big Breaks in it and you can deal with the tight string spacing then get that. Even better shop used and try to snag one of the higher end SR basses for sub £700, the depreciation on them is heartbreaking for sellers but amazing for buyers. For any Ibanez with Bart Mk or BH electrics I wouldn't be paying over £400 really, a bit more money gets you a much better sounding pickup and preamp.
