Basic passive bass IIRC, vol x2 and tone x2. Think they retailed for just under £200 for the 4 string and i think another £20 for the 5. I tried the 5 string and it was way to cramped at the bridge for my liking but the 4 looks better
Of the T’bird type basses out there around that price, definitely my choice would be the Spector Rex (/Rex Brown) – especially in the “holoflash” finish like the pic. There was a 2nd hand 5-string recently in a local music shop for £350, sweet player and sounded v "rock" but with a modern “hi-fi” edge to it too. Stretching to £500 or so you might even get lucky and pick up an old unloved genuine Gibson RD or RD Artist, which have a more rounded T’bird shape and 2+2 headstock. These were Gibson’s top of the line bass in their day (late ‘70’s / early 80’s), but never really caught on mainly due to weight and complex Moog electrics, and as they’re so unknown these days can sometimes be had cheap. Not especially neck-heavy, just …… heavy. Heavier than anything you’ve ever played. But the sound is worth it, massive and brutal - love mine, just swap to the Rick now and again to rest the back......
My RD Artist '77 in natural maple sold on ebay for about £450 i think, original case and gigged condition. Was gutted!
Daft electronics = anything with more than one tone control. I don't understand all this fancy EQ malarkey, I just want my one good sound, and if I have 4 or 5 knobs AND 2 switches to twiddle a) how do I know what to twiddle and ii) surely I don't have to write down each setting etc in order to keep a tone after things get twiddled accidentally? So: I want passive Precision tone and style but a Warwick neck. And I'd be wasting lots of wonga on things I'd never use if I went Warwick. I think it's the waste that troubles me most. Feel free to recommend a passive 5 string with the mother of all necks (depth not width).
There's always a few passive Streamer Standards knocking about (i sold my 5 for about £200), lovely Warwick neck and a passive humbucker. I sold mine cos it looked like a Warwick but sounded like a Precision! The only controls are a volume (with push/pull) and tone

Fender Mexican Jazz vs. American Highway 1 Jazz
lemmywinks replied to tinsoldier's topic in Bass Guitars
I tried a few MIM Jazz basses about a year ago along with MIA and Squiers. In terms of how they felt in my hands the MIM was a lot closer to the Squier than the MIA, in fact it felt a bit cheaper (the scratchplate on a sunburst one i played was particularly ugh, was rough around the edges). However they do seem to be very popular so maybe i just got hold of a few bad eggs. If money is an issue, try a Squier with a decal change.... IMO it's as genuine a Fender as the MIM one! -

I was gonna mention 'rays as all the fretless ones i've seen have pau ferro 'boards, what strings are they shipped with? Also where do you guys get Status Hotwires? I've not bought strings online for a bit! EDIT: Anybody know what D'Addario ENR71 Half Round Reg. Lt Ga. Bass Stirngs sound like? They seem cheap enough for me to give em a go
Hiya people, I play a MM 4 string and keep tormenting myself with a MM 5 string in the music shop. I can't afford one (or play one for that matter) but fancy maybe a cheapo copy to tinker with. I notice on the 'bay' that there is a 'Stratavarious' MM5 (type copy) for about £120 new, delivered and wondered if anyone has any views on either those or the Vintage copies. Cheers, Si.
You should have said Si, i sold my OLP MM3 5 string for £100 with gig bag a couple of months back! Think i even told our simon to tell you about it! Mind you, that would involve relying on a drummer...............
Larry Graham... (Sly and the Family Stone, Graham Central Station, Prince) Have a look about for his instructional video. It's a good laugh - the man's totally mad! There's some good instructional stuff on youtube too. Have a look for a user called 'marlowedk'.
Is that the one where he starts playing "aint no fun to me" with the massive scream? That's awesome! There's also a cracking version of POW on youtube, look out for the 'fro!

My most expensive instrument is my Zoot Deluxe Custom. I paid £710 for it (with flightcase), which is not a lot for a custom luthier built instrument. At first i thought it had more features than i need and that i wouldn't be using stuff like the D-tuner or the high pass switch, but they come in handy. Plus it's got shedloads of ebony on it
