1.
Would you buy an Aston and drive it sedately or leave it in the garage for fear of getting stone chips on it ? Defeats the object of buying it in the first place. Try roundwounds and see if the sound is what you want, if it is just enjoy playing it. Wear will depend on how much you use it and how aggressive your style is. I think Pino Palladino went through 4 fretboards on his Musicman bass.
In the ideal world this is what i'd do! However can't afford to have work done on a bass which i don't gig with. I'd love to replace the fretboard every time it's needed but don't have the funds! I'm looking for a similar sound but without the ballache of replacing the fingerboard when needed! I bought the bass cos it was extremely cheap (£335 with gator case), i already have a fretless with rounds on (and usa fender electrics) which sounds awesome, just want to get the same feel from my warmoth without ruining it! I don't think my fretless style is too aggressive but my other fretless is already worn (rosewood board), so want to safeguard this one a bit. Anyone here use rounds with pau ferro?
2. I take it opt for the centre line means directly below the string? I tend to use horizontal and vertical vibrato on fretless (if that makes sense), whichever is quickest to execute and sounds better in the given situation. I tried the elitels nickels on fretted and didn't like them but don't know how good they'd sound on fretless. Can anyone reccommend any brands? Alternatively is there a brand of rounds that maybe have thinner coils, or that aren't as rough? I guess they wouldn't grind the board down too much. Is pau ferro hard enough to withstand rounds or is ebony the only viable solution?
3. Hi all I've had my Warmoth fretless for a while now and have a hankering to string it with roundwounds. It's a lovely bass and sounds top with flats on but i find myself playing my jaco copy instead because i prefer the sound and feel of rounds. However i'm a bit hesitant because of possible wear and tear on the fretboard. It's a realy pretty piece of pau ferro and wouldn't want it churned up! Anyone know how durable pau ferro is with rounds? Maybe there is a brand that is kinder to fretless fingerboards? Any help is much appreciated!
No thats mine, which i have had for sale on here for a few weeks with no luck...i dont think i will be lucky enough to get 2 bidders again like the one mentioned..but IMO i am not too sure about the bidding on the other one just running away like that, seemed a bit iffy to me as already mentioned...but of course may be wrong
Small world!
5. There's one on now for BIN £995. Not the same one is it? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Overwater-Progress-3...id=p3286.c0.m14
6. What do the electric mistress and small stone sound like? I'm looking for a wide, bass heavy sweep like Billy Gould in Faith No More's live album. Do they sit well with distortion? Cheers
7. As everyone else has said, it depends on the electronics. If it's got a decent pre in it and good pickups then it's a good amount of bass for the money. I remember shortly after i bought my corvette standard 4 (for £598 new) i saw the same bass on sale for £530, still thought i'd got a good deal though. What electronics are in it, and did you get the old ones with it? (you could sell those on).
8. The main instrument i play around the house is my classical. I have a nice Art et Lutherie acoustic too but always prefer the classical. My main instrument is by far the bass but i love self-accompaniment on a nylon string guitar. Plus it's funny when a guitarist gives you a guitar and finds out you actually have a lot more understanding of it than they do!
9. I'm selling my HA5500, 500w Hartke head with tupe and solid state preamps and 10 band eq for £200
10. Check out the macassar ebony top on the zoot in my profile pic. Looks nicer in person too!
11. Good price on the Hartke, the A series are cracking little amps. Extremely loud for their size too! I've got the A70 (12" cone) and it handles a low B at high volumes with ease
12.
+1 for trades of relative value. My sister frequently goes into Primark or wherever, spunks a load of cash on clothes and then promptly returns it all for a refund. Her logic is that she has satisfied the part of a woman's brain that needs to spend money unneccesarily and can therefore return the goods. I was thinking that an idea along similar lines would be temporary swaps. For example, person A is GASsing for a P -bass whilst person B is gassing for, I don;t know, a lightweight combo. Said basschatters arrange a swap for a few weeks. In all likelihood, person A decides that actually he doesn;t really use a P bass, returns it to it's rightful owner collects lightweight rig and all is well, for a few weeks at least.
Why don't primark sell basses?
13. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2008-Black-Fretless-...id=p3286.c0.m14 This has been hanging around for ages, apparently a fretless bass body! When you think about it, all bass bodies are fretless really............
14. I think trades of relative value are the way forward! After all, how many of us actually spend money from bass sales on anything other than bass gear?!?!?!? I suppose there's always the need to recoup money after a recent purchase, a situation i currently find myself in after a particularly costly bass binge.
15.
I dream that one day I might find a real bargain in a charity or other shop. Maybe someday. Without a truss rod, fixing fret buzz isn't something I'd even consider doing. Though, this youtube video makes it look easy. Yeah, the guy fixing the guitar just grabs a piece of wood and makes a new bridge saddle out of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvuahP-ZO-c
There was also an old violin in the charity shop which had sold for the same price. I took the guitar into the music shop down the road and the assistant said a guy had just brought the violin in and that it was in decent nick (just no strings and needed cleaning up plus some minor work) and was worth a couple of hundred. Not really my bag but just goes to show!
16. Interested in a (lined) fretless Warmoth Jazz with Duncans, Schaller tuners and Gotoh bridge? Walnut body with pau ferro neck and 'board? Just thought i'd ask as i love the look of that Warwick!
17.
those look really nice in person, the photos don't do it justice at all! good luck with the sale mate.
It's not mine, my squier is a different finish and comes with a case! Just thought i'd let y'all know cos it seems like a real bargain
18. Probably shouldn't post this as my Squier is for sale here for more..... Really nice Squier standard in a gig bag for £99, £10 postage? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Squier-Standard-seri...id=p3286.c0.m14 Seems like a bargain to me... can only imagine what they paid for it!
19.
The details say that they are buzzing around the 8th fret. There was no mention of a truss rod in the details. My thought was that a classical guitar for £17 including p&p is cheap, but probably only for people who know what they are doing so that any problems can be fixed.
I've played classical as a side to bass for 8 years (i'm still rubbish!) and have found that most cheaper classicals have no truss rod due to the strings not putting on as much pressure, this is why idiots that put steel strings on em often end up with completely ruined guitars. I got my main classical from oxfam in sheffield for the princely sum of £25! It had steel strings on it (well 2 steel strings...) and needed a lot of attention. Had it up and running within a week and it's actually got really stable over the years. I picked it up the other day and it had stayed in tune for over 2 days! Did some research and found out it's a Finnish made guitar from the seventies Another thing is that most cheap classicals buzz above the 8th fret and are very hard to play above the 5th! If these guitars have decent fingerboards (as opposed to painted ones) they could be ok
20.
Hey Steve! Good choice on gettin Hartke'd up! There's some Hartke bargains goin in the [topic="28035"]For Sale Threads here[/topic], [topic="25107"]and here![/topic] Glad to have a guitarist on board too, you'll be able to get into some quite, erm, interesting debates Take it easy, Phil
Cheers for the heads up! And welcome on here, the best bass forum by a mile!
21. Those classicals look extremely good value! From the state of the boxes in the pic looks like they were damaged in the post.
22. BUMP for pics! Finally had half an hour spare (just about) so nipped in the guitar shop and got pics
23. I love Jazz basses but wouldn't buy a Fender, purely because i'd want more value for money! Also haven't got on with scratchplates as i need more room for my thumb (i've got fingers like pigs' t*ts). For me the most desirable body shape is either a Tobias or a Warwick Fortress. Different and exotic but not OTT. Would never have a P, if i'm still playing when i'm 60 i might fancy one but who knows!
24. Looks exactly the same as an old Shine 6er i had (£120 new from cash converters), even the fugly headstock. My shine had a really nice see-through cherry finish though Kinda like this........... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Brand-New-Shine-6-St...id=p3286.c0.m14 The preamp was (obviously) terrible though and the pickups sounded like their output was way too high, took a lot of tweaking for the bass to behave itself and even then it was a farty sound i had no real use for. Ebayed it for £90! I do like the thru-neck one, like a Tobias only more suited to my current budget!
