Do you have any recommendations for flats for an acoustic bass?
lemmywinks replied to ossyrocks's topic in Bass Guitars
Just scanned the PMT clearance and they have Roto flats on sale for £27 at the moment: https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/rotosound-rs77el-jazz-bass-monel-flatwound-bass-guitar-strings-45-105-extra-long-scale -
I have the Notepad 5, in fact I think you recommended it ages ago after my Behringer 302USB started playing up. Been using it as my regular practice setup ever since, great little desk.

Collection only in Cannock though.

I've always liked Roto 88 black nylons on mine and they've been on there for well over 10 years. I had Galli black nylon tape wound on there as well which were fantastic, I don't think they have a UK supplier though so you're probably looking at £80, they do last forever so cheap in the long run. With acoustic bass you're best playing to its strengths and black nylons do that very well IMO, if you like thump (and also no frets!) they are well worth a look. -
The reason we chose the 18 is we wanted 5 separate monitor mixes and also every input is XLR which means we only need to have one type of cable. Although that last part sounds trivial it invalidates the "I don't know what cables go where" excuse from band members who want other people to do all the work.
-
Realistically a decent sized tablet for the main mix, I use an old Toshiba Portege Z20t convertible laptop but the software runs on pretty much anything. Band members use the simplified phone app to tweak their individual monitor mix but I use a 9" Windows tablet, I have this on a mic stand clamp attached to my bass stand so it's always within easy reach but not in the way. If you want to use it wirelessly you will need a 5Ghz router though so maybe the Soundcraft Ui or RCF digital desks would be a better bet. Making adjustments is easy, once you get over the initial learning curve there's so many useful features that it makes life a lot easier. Loads of handy presets for compresson settings and HPF on inputs, stuff like that. Put it this way - I don't really know what I'm doing and it was easy to get a good sound!
-
Why not just go for the Behringer X series digital desks, the XR18 has 6 monitor sends and a separate aux out? We have ours in a 3u shallow rack alongside a router, power strip and bluetooth adapter (for wireless aux out) and it's very compact, however on it's own it's just 31 x 13 x 15cm - absolutely tiny.
-
Powered PA cab with a small (2 main input and aux in) mixer is the way forward here. What sort of volume do you need?

Realistically you can do all your bass related soldering with the cheapest iron on eBay/AliExpress, the TS100 is a great budget iron that will do you for just everything though, well beyond basic pots/jacks. I've done some board repairs with mine so it's paid for itself a few times over. Passive bass looms are about as basic as soldering gets so there's no need to pay anybody to do it for you. -

Are the routs on the CMI big enough to take regular Jazz pickups? You can buy a TS100 and a power supply for around £50, can make your own loom up very easily. No need to buy premade. -
Mine has been the same for a few days now, as soon as the Evri courier picked it up from the drop off point it went to the "There was an issue while in transit" status. Evri are just generally rubbish and it's pot luck if you get a good driver, for a while we had a woman delivering here who was great but now we just get parcels left on the doorstep in full view.
-
I've also had a payout with Interparcel over a damaged speaker which was quite straightforward. Another time I had to contact their CS for an undelivered parcel as the UPS driver was trying to deliver well outside contracted hours (7pm - 9pm on three occaisions) and although initially the CS was useless once I got through to a higher up (which was straight after I requested it) everything was sorted immediately.
-
The seller might be copypasting what the eBay tracking says, I've got an item being delivered (well, hopefully) by Evri/Hermes and I get this when I try and track it via eBay: "There was an issue whilst your package was in transit. We'll update you as soon as more info is available. Deliveries may take longer than usual due to Royal Mail industrial action."
-
The unholy trinity of sh1te couriers is Evri/Hermes, Yodel and DX.

Mainstream festival = pop music. ArcTanGent, Green Man etc are on every year, plenty of original acts touring out there who would be chuffed at some new fans turning up. Reading/Leeds and V etc cater to a slightly younger audience than the average BC member, if they're enjoying it and think it's worth going then that's all that matters really. These days they aren't something I'd personally consider worthwhile but it isn't aimed at me, I'm sure my parents thought the music I listened to in the 90s and early 00s was awful too.

Some of those look ok until you get to the headstocks and the price tags.

Bass Direct has the internal measurements for the Gator mixer bags along with some of the heads that fit in them: https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Gig_Skinz_Gig_Bags.html There's a new Small one (11" x 10") for sale in the classifieds on here if that's any use:

He scammed a friend of mine over a drum machine a bit ago as well, I directed him to this thread. I spoke to a retired DI friend about this and he said Facebook is a nightmare for police to investigate as they won't co-operate at all without a warrant (or some police speak, can't remember exactly as we we're at the pub). I don't think Mick knows this so will be full of confidence about his ability to get away with scaling his scams up into the sort of territory where people won't let it go so easily and he won't have the same sort of protection. He's not exactly a criminal mastermind so this will catch up with him sooner rather than later I would expect. Given his criminal history you would think next time he'll get a bit more than a slap on the wrists as well.

Bargain five string - £50 for a quick sale - *SOLD*
lemmywinks replied to ambient's topic in Basses For Sale
Headstock looks a bit short for one of Shine's own branded models, they usually have a bit more beyond the machine heads. probably an OEM from the Chinese Saein factory mind. I had the 6 string version of this bass in trans red many moons ago and also the posher SB525TA 5 string with a fancy top. Both solid basses that punched well above their used value, especially the 5 string which I gigged a few times. -
That's what we had, the old grey plastic one which did us fine, sold it a bit ago and eventually only got £40 for it after a couple of months so they're cheap to pick up as well.
-
But yeah try and get used to IEMs, wedge monitors turned out to be nothing more than a stepping stone for me.
-
The little Behringer ones are great as mic stand monitors, otherwise a small powered wedge is what you want. When our singer and keys player started using IEMs me and the drummer bought a small JBL 10" monitor and just used that, worked fine. Better options are available for more money obviously!
