Pretty clueless about stuff like this so forgive any stupid questions! My daughter (she's 10) has decided she'd like to learn piano, she's had a go on one before but has started using the Violin Practice game on Roblox, surprisingly after about 20 minutes she'd already written a nice melody over a chord progression, written it down and performed it which was annoyingly good even though she doesn't know what any of the notes mean. She can sing perfectly in tune so looks like she's got this from Mrs. Lemmywinks rather than her tone deaf old man! Anyway she wants a small keyboard so she has real keys to practice on, as with a lot of kids nowadays she does everything through her laptop and liked the look of small controller keyboards I showed her so would it be practical to use one of these as a basic small digital piano/keyboard? If so what software would she need to get a basic piano sound out of it on her laptop? She literally just wants that - no drums, synths or recording etc. Just a basic piano sound she can mess about on and play with. Are the basic ones on the Windows app store suitable for this? If she likes it then she'll be getting a little digital piano and lessons obviously, knowing what kids are like I'd rather start her off with something like this first as I'll take less of a hit selling it on if she ends up losing interest.

My last band required a 5 so yes, some people do need them. Had detuners on previous basses for a low D but playing a wider variety of music meant I needed lower than that, I also always found detuners more faff than just having more range. Plus loads of songs are easier on a 5 anyway.

Staining your fingerboard...photos.
lemmywinks replied to NancyJohnson's topic in Repairs and Technical
I tried the Fiebings black dye on my defretted acoustic which had a lovely reddish rosewood board that never looked right as a fretless. Tbh when all was said and done I also thought it looked a bit ugly dyed black, very unnatural looking especially in contrast to the rest of the bass. I sanded it back a touch (still very dark mind) and applied a few coats of Danish oil, much better and much more like what I was hoping for. The none more black looks great on the OP's Lull though, definitely suits that bass. -

Funnily enough I spoke to Nordstrand about raising the pole pieces on one of their pickups to match the fingerboard profile of my Sire, they said it would be fine to push them up from the bottom but a bit risky to push them back again. This worked on Nordstrands as the pole pieces extend a bit below the base whereas the original Sire pickups are flush.

If you look at what's happened to Hendrix's estate then maybe it's for the best, just leave everyone a humongous amount of money with nothing to sue each other over. Not saying his offspring are like that but money does funny things to people.

What does the rear of the pickup look like, can you not take the guts out of the outer casing and swap them for a regular J pickup?

Tbh I'm considering a change from a full covers setup to more acoustic stuff geared towards quiet weddings and bars, the scene here offers much more opportunities for small bands without a full kit. Haven't had the need for anything other than compression for a long time so the Fishman is all I need really. My band has folded mainly due to covid so it's a nice opportunity to scale everything down.

One of the worst things about no gigs for the foreseeable future is that I've had to shelve my long term plans of getting a Helix even though I don't need one.

There's a pretty much new EA iAmp Doubler in the marketplace for the bargain price of £495: There's also a matching Wizzy 1x12 cab on there for £220 but it's collection only. I'd be using something like that if I wanted a traditional amp head for fretless, at the moment I have a Fishman Pro Platinum DI into a QSC powered cab which sounds fantastic when I put fretless through it. Another way of achieving the same goal.

Only about £30 more for a new one off AliExpress.

Sire V7 is the bass with the best B string I've played at that price range and the 18mm spacing is comfortable for me. Although the Harley Bentons have a great rep for the 4 strings every demo of a 5 I've heard has had a low B that sounds like a risky fart so if you want to save money have a look at the Sire V3 @ around £300. I picked up my V7 used for around that price though so that might be an option.

If anybody wants a small amp section for a project like this I have a Kinsman 10w bass head (of sorts) going spare, one of those BB10BS cheapies from a knackered combo, I used it in a makeshift acrylic case for a while until I got a better amp for around the house. Left the lid and black plastic wrap on but had to take the speakon and IEC connectors out. Has the handle and screws etc which might be handy. Can post it out for free to anybody who wants to rescue it from the bin, furloughed at the moment but will post as soon as I'm back in work.

I'd be tempted to remove the scratchplate on that, reckon it would look complete the look.

Kenny's music have some good deals on Corts, this GB75-JJ with an Ampeg BA108 setup for £399. The basses are usually in the £450-£530 range and the amp is £99 on its own so looks like a very good deal for a starter setup: https://www.kennysmusic.co.uk/cort-gb75-jj-5-string-bass-guitar-aqua-blue?source=googleps&gclid=CjwKCAiA5IL-BRAzEiwA0lcWYseqoAZJJ0uUc01nekju8jSzMgTuWHNptjd0aVSYjIBMyR8OT1fy7hoCHGIQAvD_BwE 4 String version for £349: https://www.kennysmusic.co.uk/cort-gb74-jj-bass-guitar-aqua-blue B-Stock bass only for £299: https://www.kennysmusic.co.uk/cort-gb74jj-4-string-active-bass-amber-b-stock Kytary have the 5 string basses for £363, JJ and JH versions: https://kytary.co.uk/cort-gb75-jj-ab/HN170388/?gclid=CjwKCAiA5IL-BRAzEiwA0lcWYngNgb3Hs4qCbDHw2DmMCH0TWRvl1ALpySyGbDo8ee5VZoibtW2XixoCMi8QAvD_BwE https://kytary.co.uk/cort-gb75-jh-tr/HN170384/?gclid=CjwKCAiA5IL-BRAzEiwA0lcWYhQ2mb0CPgeDiJrbVX-l6kMJY0U48I-9XQ1HMegWyq60yNYslh1MwRoCgJMQAvD_BwE

This thread went weird 🤣

The pedal is for live use, the Fishman Platinum Pro which was £230 when I bought it years ago. The amp head is a TC BH250 and is just for playing at home through a little EA 110 cab, picked it up with the 3 switch pedal for £120 and sold the pedal for £30. Even new the amp is cheaper at £185 and the BQ version even more so at £155.
-
Regardless of cost I think people were pretty excited about the BF amp so I can see why they are disappointed. I'm not bothered either way as I won't be buying either. Besides, I own 1 amp and 1 pedal, the amp was £90 and the pedal was £230!
-
Yeah I'm not doubting that, just that previous hints at an amp head in development coupled with teaser photos showing a volume knob on a brushed chrome surface will have got people excited about the release of an amp. Kind of an unintentional bait and switch, we'd all rather have a new amp than a pedal right?
-
It's probably going to be an extremely good product, you would expect so with it being an expensive pedal made by Cog. However when a company that makes active/passive bass cabs releases teaser photos showing an old school knob on a brushed metal chassis most people are going to assume it's some sort of bass amp, not a drive pedal made by an entirely different company. The downside of having a dedicated and sometimes feverish fanbase is that they don't like being let down.

I loved the EHX Stereo Electric Mistress, in fact I sold it due to not gigging fretless but then immediately had to buy another! Just use the Toneprint chorus on my amp now since getting rid of my board, kinda gets part of the way there but not as natural sounding as the EHX.

Rather than have a long daisy chain for just 3 pedals look for CCTV cables, you can get 3 way ones (and others) to make your board a little bit neater. Something like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DC-BLACK-CABLE-LV-POWER-SPLITTER-2-1MM-1-x-FEMALE-IN-3-x-RIGHT-ANGLE-MALE-OUT/321915388318?hash=item4af3a7019e:g:wO4AAOSwT5tWP3uO Used these cables with single power supplies (Dunlop and TC FWIW) on mini 2/3 pedal boards for years with no issues.
