A courier success story! TNT to the rescue
lemmywinks replied to Paul S's topic in General Discussion
We used to use TNT at work until their rates were no longer competitive, never had an issue and their Express Shipper software was excellent. All the drivers were superb as well. -
Andertons reviews are always unlistenable for me, they always remind me of failed children's TV show presenters. Still better than Gear4Music who just get one of their guitarists to plonk away on a bass for 5 minutes while recording it on their smartphone.

Mesa Boogie sold, Ashdown, Trace Elliott rumours?
lemmywinks replied to Chienmortbb's topic in Amps and Cabs
Peavey are doing great things with the Trace brand IMO, they revived a long dead relic that only a small minority of players have a fondness for and made it into a range of amplification that stands out in a crowded market. Trace were very much a product of their time and a range of amps based on what they used to offer players would absolutely tank today. I played and gigged TE back in the 90s btw and still played through a Trace preamp in our rehearsal room before covid hit, there's no desire to go back to it from me. Would consider an Elf if I needed a little rig though. -
Look for an old Schecter Hellcat, good luck as you don't see 'em!

So Fender owned, licensed Fender headstock, made in Mexico, bridge identical to the Fender high mass variant, fitted with Fender strings.... I think I see a pattern emerging here! Still more interesting to me than anything else from the MIM Fender line, have a feeling the street price over here would be way more than I'd be willing to pay though.

Looks like they licensed the headstock shape, assume Charvel are owned by Fender (or by whoever owns Fender)? Made in Mexico so I guess if you joined the dots... Quite like the look of this:

You probably already know this but you can usually tell solid or laminate tops by looking at the grain inside the soundhole:

Up the budget a little and look for a used Art et Lutherie, budget guitars that are handmade to an very good standard in Canada and sound like it too. New prices have crept up over the years but you can still get used ones for around £150-£200, in the odd moments I get an urge to play 6 string guitar I regret selling mine.

What's the difference between Ash and Swamp Ash?

The swamp? -
Warmoth do DInky J and P bodies if you find a neck you like, lots of options obviously.

New 5 string Warwick Corvette $$ style build
lemmywinks replied to Jimothey's topic in Build Diaries
Another idea might be a brass plate like a few manufacturers used to do, mainly to aid slapping on fretless but at least it would look like a deliberate addition rather than a cover up. Good enough for Wal: and Alembic: -
USB controller keyboard for a child to learn on?
lemmywinks replied to lemmywinks's topic in Other Instruments
Turned up today, unfortunately couldn't get Native Access to open while connected to the internet and even when I disconnected it required an update so no go on that front at the moment, downloaded two apps from the Windows store (Piano 10 and Pianotime) which work perfectly as plug & play programs so the girl is happy. -
USB controller keyboard for a child to learn on?
lemmywinks replied to lemmywinks's topic in Other Instruments
She's just creating little single melodies at the moment, nice to see her getting stuck in to something and if the interest lasts longer than a week I'll look into online lessons as we're in tier 4 now. Her's comes with Pro Tools First and Xpand!2, think we'll look at Kontakt player first. -
USB controller keyboard for a child to learn on?

It was between that and the little Akai 25 key one, she had an Amazon voucher for Christmas so I put a little bit more in the pot to get the M-Audio. The only iPad we have is an old 1st gen Mini I use for the Mackie app which is legacy tech, the Kontakt Player mentioned above should work fine though. She uses her laptop all the time now and barely touches her tablet after getting the Roblox bug. -

Nice one thanks, will grab the full version. She's been at it all day today and has decided on the M-Audio Keystation. -
Pretty clueless about stuff like this so forgive any stupid questions! My daughter (she's 10) has decided she'd like to learn piano, she's had a go on one before but has started using the Violin Practice game on Roblox, surprisingly after about 20 minutes she'd already written a nice melody over a chord progression, written it down and performed it which was annoyingly good even though she doesn't know what any of the notes mean. She can sing perfectly in tune so looks like she's got this from Mrs. Lemmywinks rather than her tone deaf old man! Anyway she wants a small keyboard so she has real keys to practice on, as with a lot of kids nowadays she does everything through her laptop and liked the look of small controller keyboards I showed her so would it be practical to use one of these as a basic small digital piano/keyboard? If so what software would she need to get a basic piano sound out of it on her laptop? She literally just wants that - no drums, synths or recording etc. Just a basic piano sound she can mess about on and play with. Are the basic ones on the Windows app store suitable for this? If she likes it then she'll be getting a little digital piano and lessons obviously, knowing what kids are like I'd rather start her off with something like this first as I'll take less of a hit selling it on if she ends up losing interest.

My last band required a 5 so yes, some people do need them. Had detuners on previous basses for a low D but playing a wider variety of music meant I needed lower than that, I also always found detuners more faff than just having more range. Plus loads of songs are easier on a 5 anyway.

Staining your fingerboard...photos.
lemmywinks replied to NancyJohnson's topic in Repairs and Technical
I tried the Fiebings black dye on my defretted acoustic which had a lovely reddish rosewood board that never looked right as a fretless. Tbh when all was said and done I also thought it looked a bit ugly dyed black, very unnatural looking especially in contrast to the rest of the bass. I sanded it back a touch (still very dark mind) and applied a few coats of Danish oil, much better and much more like what I was hoping for. The none more black looks great on the OP's Lull though, definitely suits that bass. -

Funnily enough I spoke to Nordstrand about raising the pole pieces on one of their pickups to match the fingerboard profile of my Sire, they said it would be fine to push them up from the bottom but a bit risky to push them back again. This worked on Nordstrands as the pole pieces extend a bit below the base whereas the original Sire pickups are flush.

If you look at what's happened to Hendrix's estate then maybe it's for the best, just leave everyone a humongous amount of money with nothing to sue each other over. Not saying his offspring are like that but money does funny things to people.

What does the rear of the pickup look like, can you not take the guts out of the outer casing and swap them for a regular J pickup?
