Your experiences of playing in a tribute band.
lemmywinks replied to Grassie's topic in General Discussion
That's ace! I've been trying to get our keys player to wear an energy dome for years, the pillock calls it a hat........... -
I shop pretty regularly on there and it's no different from buying anywhere else really, they seem to have a few Ibanez branded parts for good prices including those big humbuckers with oversize black pole pieces. In fact I have AliExpress bridges on two basses at the moment and they're both great, a lot of the hardware you see on UK parts resellers is the same stuff but with a higher price tag.

Just had a quick look for the fallout thread (the bass was sold on the marketplace here) and it was 2009. EDIT - Old bald fella, had a penchant for wearing tartan trousers. -

Yeah I had to message Mr. Peebles after said bass player scammed me on here by not paying for a bass. FWIW your mate seemed like a decent bloke, the tartan trousered mess of a bass player less so! -

Not a James something is it? Bryce? -
Would explain the spelling errors!

That fretless is lovely @Beedster, keep having a sneaky look at it on your FS thread! Exactly my type of fretless if you remove all that chrome stuff.

I put this together for under £300 with careful used purchases, done over a couple of years though! Fishman Piezo bridge with a Bartolini preamp, skimped on the tuners (Wilkonson) and pickups (Duncan Designed) to keep the cost down with an eye to upgrading them when suitably priced parts came up but I never bothered. Neck is Mighty Mite (back before they shot up in price) and the body is from an old Cort built Hohner. Looks, sounds and plays like a much more expensive bass. I wouldn't immediately discount cheap hardware from AliExpress etc either, I have a Schaller copy bridge fitted to an old Jazz bitsa which has been great and I have one of these on my Cort which is surprisingly heavy and all I need in a bridge: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/A-Set-Chrome-Vintage-L-Shape-Saddle-Bridge-for-5-String-Electric-Bass-Guitar-Top/32701082348.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.27424c4dEVbgCU

Ah right, the seller said they were £110 so I assumed they were USA. Can get the licensed ones for about £15 each and they ended up selling for £68 posted which is a bit naughty if they're licensed. The licensed ones are great btw, mentioning just in case the OP is put off them by this slight derail! Had a set on a Cort and they were rock solid for an entire gig as well as being light as a feather (as the name would suggest).

A set of USA Hipshot Ultralites has just sold for £50 too, plenty of bargains knocking around.

On here recently I've bought a pair of Nordstrand 5 string pups and a set of 5 Schaller tuners for the combined total of £120, there's been East preamps selling for under £100 and a Gotoh bridge on here at the moment for £40. No reason you can't put together a monster spec bass for £500-600 if you're patient, even less if you just want a basic Squier level neck and body.

somebody please enlighten me !!!!

I like the interesting and varied angles of the tuners, perhaps he has had a cetain forum favourite eBayer install them for him on a commission basis? Also how is that low B staying in the nut, is it tuned to pitch then expoxied in? -
Oh and defret it too! 😁

Use black nylon coated strings on an acoustic, sounds much better. Also ignore the poster who thinks you need special strings, that's nonsense.

That's the most 80s thing I've ever seen. They even got Screech from Saved by the Bell to play guitar.
-
I'm not gonna lie if that was half the price it would be strapped to my gigging bass next time out.

Although still not my cup of tea the sparkly shiny Arias do look pretty neat in videos, nice 3D effect to the finish when the bass moves.

The Riddled Road of Fretless Bass Guitar...
lemmywinks replied to The Real Jake's topic in General Discussion
As mentioned above I would try carefully removing some of the height of the fret marker with a sharp razor. Should be able to do that without creating too (if any) much polishing work for yourself later. -

Should have just got a Warwick Streamer, same shape but sounds and plays miles better. A massive improvement on the original flawed design. 😁 -
If it's a Fender style one like this then you can bend the contacts back: However if it's a barrel jack then you will need to replace it: Link here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Neutrik-3-pole-Stereo-1-4-6-35mm-Barrel-Jack-Socket-for-Ibanez-Guitar-Bass-3P-/201032848899

Never sure why some people have such strong feelings regarding the MB aesthetic, I always thought they looked pretty neat personally. They carved out an identity for themselves and are instantly recognisable which is quite difficult to do, as soon as you see one on a stage you know it's a Mark Bass rig and it must be working as I tend to see an awful lot of them regardless of the setting or level of gig. I'd also argue that they are pretty consistent with their amp and cab lineup, they have regular ranges which they have been doing versions of for years and supplement that with more diverse products. For example you can buy a rig today which is almost identical to the 10 year old one I had up until last year, albeit with rat fur instead of nice tolex. Regarding the basses - neither floats my boat but the Richard Bona one looks alright and is obviously what he wants (which is what matters). Can't really fault them for doing a Fender style bass when almost every other manufacturer seems to offer one. Disappointed there is no yellow and black bass though.

I always wondered whether the therapist guy (Phil something?) was intentionally intrusive, as if he was deliberately engineering a situation where the band rejected him as a cohesive unit. At the time I thought that was why he was going as far as suggesting lyrics etc, maybe he was just a complete berk.
