pair of pliers and marine epoxy?
yep, can't get away from the 'stepped' sound as you slide. Pedals are not going to give you a true fretless slide. i did the plyers thing too. yanked out the frets having been inspired by the playing of the great, late, Mick Karn. 2 days later I gigged the bass. Never even filled in the holes left by the frets. Young and full of beans grab a Warwick rockbass fretless. one of the older ones are dirt cheap. not pretty, but a decent fretless sound and play nice.

What a f***** night. buzz from my amp D.I. so used a D.I box .accidentally left a lead in the house. Spare turns out to be dodgy. Had to borrow. Running late due to assembling lighting rig/dancing around bingo machine. So no time to check my newly aquired bass. well pi**** off by that. Half way through 2nd spot, guitarist(mixing on stage) tells me my bass isn't coming through P.A. ??? soldier on turn up backline. No time after gig to check what was wrong, so problem will need solving tomorrow night, when there will be.... no time to sound check my new bass cos of lighting rig...etc etc blah blah blah Groundhog Day. I know we've all had such nights. tonight, was a 'mare. thanks for listening to my moan.

Ive read every one. some funny, some wince-worthy. Oh how we really do suffer for our passions. My split hand is nothing compared to being squashed up against a wall by a partially deaf van driver. I was watching him back to a fire door when he failed to hear me shout "stop!" several times. he kept on reversing until i was trapped between the van and a wall, I just began to feel my intestines making their way to my 'rear end' ( I kid you not, worst feeling ever) when the drummer appeared at the exit door and ran shouting at the driver. I had to sit on a soft ring for a while after that, and I swear it's the cause of my occasional bad back problems.
Any Billy Sheehan stuff, or Iron Maiden. Both use the three finger technique... ooer missus
Iron Maiden, 2 fingers, according to the man himself. oh, but maybe you meant you can adapt the 3 to it.
-
something a tad faster? It's not easy learning a new technique when you have been playing another way from the beginning. Like everything else....time. I use the technique in one song, Stereophonics' Dakota. Its a very simple pumping 8 to a bar. Anything trickier and I have to think harder about using the fingers in sequence. Having said that I not too interested in the technique. It's impressive, but unless you are performing your own songs requiring that style, or emulating Billy Sheehan, why?

I'm sat here with a bandage on my right hand. Underneath, between my thumb and first finger are some stitches. Why? I forgot my protective gloves while carrying band gear. A nice big drum- stand box and a bass bin nip the flesh in that area, creating a 'hole' that wasn't very big, but bloody and ugly. Band member:..." what you done? Daft bugger, where's your gloves?" he was right. no sympathy deserved. been doing it long enough. following day, 2 1/2 hours in casualty. stitched. that night, playing on stage, stretching for notes, 2 stitches come out. (my fingerboard hand) now it wont heal very neat. What injuries have you suffered for your art??

leftyhook replied to 4-string-thing's topic in General Discussion
Precision is definitely a good start. not sure i would want to be in a band that wont tell you much. would give me bad vibes before i got my bass out. just go and to what you do! -
a very smart looking unit. pity you can't just buy the bits you will use.
No worries. We'll just take lots of photos of the gear so you'll know what you missed.
thanks mate. A few vids would be good too. I like to see/hear varied styles of playing. Always influencing to witness fellow bassists

Have you heard that Thin Lizzy Track?...Perhaps Not?
leftyhook replied to MB1's topic in General Discussion
hmm.... Probably out takes, gaffs, awful demo's.. I have the Free box set. Do I want to hear Paul Rodgers saying " Got a fag Koss?" then proceeds so sing 'Soon I will be Gone' as flat as a witches t*t. ?! -
Bought his Warwick Corvette and all was spot on. communicated til the last (all in all the deal was sorted in 2 days), well packaged and a grrreat bass! wouldn't have any qualms in dealing with again. leftyhook

Listened to the 2 songs on the website.then link took me to more vids on youtube Seriously good stuff mate! each song stands out as an individual tune, but they have a distinct style that tie them together. I come onto this forum to talk bass, but I am equally as passionate about song writing, and this stuff reminded me how much I need to get back to writing, well done all concerned!

videos are secondary. keep on writing and recording good songs. definitely has appeal that song. keep on pushing!!!!!

Great stuff! nice melody and like the singers voice. Bass is nice and prominent too, which can only be a good thing. Really enjoyed it and would like to hear more for sure

Tony Franklin tells it how it is - you have to see this

I am sure if several of us got our heads (and hands) together, we could come up with a far more informative and funnier presentation. for instance: "I say I say I say! I wouldn't say my bass was old, but the woodworm from Noah's Ark rejected it" then some bits about fretless bass, then some silly outfits and wry comments, followed by inane facial gymnastics, finished off by a bass performance with lots of fretless wobbly wobbly notes. Oh, and a gonk hairstyle for good measure. Any partakers? -
Anyone Wal users have an ideal PU height/distance from strings? How close do you go? other makes vary from 8 to 2 mm gap.

aww man. sorry to hear. sometimes scum take vehicles for the vehicle itself, not knowing what is in there. Of course we will all be vigilant.
Yes very good, but how do you embed youtube videos?
the share option under the youtube video. copy and paste. As for TF, I never said the sig. bass wasn't up to standard. I am sure its an excellent bass. Great tone, I have to say. I just think he is hardly an iconic artist to deserve such an accolade. His playing is cliché city. Compared to say, Pino's fretless work. Pino had unexpected riffs and fills. I also found the 80's video presentation unbearable to watch, so maybe I didn't give it enough time (4 minutes, including lots of skips forward!) As we always say, it is always about personal taste and opinions. -
