Cover Tunes - putting them together with the band
leftyhook replied to BottomE's topic in General Discussion
Songs linked together = medley It works, but have some gaps to make contact with the audience. I am speaking from vast experience. If you just run through without stopping you can lose the audience just as easily as stopping after every song. Oh, sometimes things go wrong, snapped strings etc. You just have to make contact with the audience to cover up. Asking them if they are having a good time etc. Your front person just needs to be confident and have a bit of cover up patter. A very interesting thread this has turned into. -
Cover Tunes - putting them together with the band

I treat every audience with the respect that I would expect if I was in the audience. After all they are in attendance expecting to be entertained, whether they know the songs they are listening to or not. They may not notice the odd change to a song, but they can certainly tell if the performer is disinterested and would rather be somewhere else. I am always happy to be playing my bass on stage, even though acoustics, through the night travelling etc can be a challenge. That is not a follow on from any of the previous posts, just my attitude of gratitude. -
nice. you handled the neck jumping really well. Never realised how interesting a part it is to play.
Im just watching his icanplayit.com videos and have to admit he doesn't strike me as arrogant as i first thought, Pretty casual and down to earth bloke really.
I think he is just a very bubbly character. May be overpowering to some. I do know that I like his playing a lot. And the book arrived! In a perfectly snug cardboard box. Really looking forward to the read. Many many many thanks Dave.
I won't be using it this way as I'll be DI'ing from my amp to get some of its valvy loveliness in there, but I will test the balanced out for noise, level etc. tonight and let you know how it works... That my friend is entirely up to you. If you're happy with what you have I wouldn't say the Boss pedal emulators on here are any better than the original, but you do get a tuner thrown in and of course miles more sounds at your disposal! If you're used to separate pedals and you want multi-fx this is a good way to go, but you can only use 3 at once...
I have a Zoom B1 which was given to me. I like the portability idea, fairly impressed with the sounds and low/no noise. (only teses at home to date) The B3 has D I too. It also looks more professional. Hoping there will be some Youtube demo's very soon. Cheers!
Great review, thanks! Any opinion on how it works as a DI into a PA in a live gig situation would be amazing
Yes, a great review, and much appreciated. I second the request re: D I into P.A Hmm..so do I sell my Boss OC-3 and chorus in favour of one of these.....?
I'm at a low level technically due to time constraints, so listening to John McVie, Duff, Adam Clayton**, Bruce Thomas and James Jamerson - I appreciate them even if I cant play much of it yet. ** I know I'll get slagged for this, just need some easy stuff to start with that fits against simple drum patterns
laying down the groove is where it starts. -

ooh crafty! -
the pub may have cause a hum, or constant buzz, but a crackle? Maybe the crackle was just a buzz being enhanced as you played? I will leave it to the electrical experts on the forum. I will say that it always seems to be the bass player, doesn't it?

I have been given a Zoom B1. Yes it is basic, but has some nice amp modelling settings. I would like to try it live using just one of the settings all night. Problem is I don't have time to mess on as the band I am with give me a window of about 30 seconds to get the bass right through the PA. Is it a case of 'plug and play' or will I have to tweak, if so, in what way? It doesn't seem noisy, but I have only tried it through my practice combo at home. I use a D.I box straight to the desk and to my Hartke head.

Cover Tunes - putting them together with the band

Not
Could be. The main criteria when we choose a song is that it is well known to lots of people. The thinking is that this might make the band available to a wider audience. Thing is, when/where do you put songs in the set that are less well known?
Not at the beginning or end of your first spot.depends how 'less known' the song is, but experiment. if you are confident that you absolutely do the song justice, and the song does YOU justice, try it in the middle of a spot. It may go so well that it becomes your opening number. you can never tell until you try a song. sometimes it seems like a 100% banker and dies on it's arse, then a song that some of you aren't certain about will go great. That's showbiz! -

Certainly, there is a list of songs that everyone has done at some time or another, and generally these are the songs to avoid if you have a musical conscience! Seriously, there are a few songs that my band begrudge playing (Don't stop believing, Sex on Fire) as we know they are done to death. In fact we have had some staff of venues asking if we play Don't stop Believing, and requesting us not to! BUT, they always fill the dance floor. That aside, we try to pick songs that are a bit fresher - if you can call Because the Night by Patti Smith 'fresh'- but it get's comments "no-one does that and I forgot how good it was" etc. I had mentioned in another post that we do 2 versions of Sex on Fire, the other being the ballad take by Sugarland. No one as ever heard it but it gets rapturous applause every night (well..) So I carry on Paul Connolly's point. Your band are 'efficient'? PIck some Earth shaking songs! get on youtube and look at how many hits certain videos have received is one angle to take. Be different -
seen that one before but havent been able to find it again. thanks. he used a squire for some recording. wow!

Forgot to mention I normally use a Hartke 350 head with an Ashdown 4 X 10. Love it. It's back on the road with me this weekend and I will carry the stuff myself if the band moan! agree with above about the tone. just not enough headroom to get a bright sound at volume.
-
I am currently using the 150 watt 1 X 15 version. All depends. They are good for positioning around your feet because of their small physical size, and angling back. is a great advantage. restrictions are the single volume, and no D.I out. the tone shaper is ok . If your band want you to use smaller/lighter gear and you can D.I through your P.A/monitor system, I would say they are...ok. However beware! If you push the volume too far it can fart/honk. It can be loud enough, but if you have the tone shaper set to a middly tone...honk! And I am talking about the bigger speaker than you are looking at. Try one in a live situation of you can. I borrowed this one with a view to buying it, but I am going to pass.

We do Sugarland's ballad version of Kings of leon's Sex On Fire. Very well received. 99% of the club audience wont have heard that version... turns my theory on it's head doesn't it?

I have a scanner.........doh! Yes I will be checking out the ibass interview. I just think his playing is sublime.
