Think so, although one of my bands is really struggling with this. We once got a comment passed to us that we played alright but didn't look like a band. Two of our group have no dress sense at all......think accountants. For the last wedding I suggested we go for a madness/two tone look - suits, thin ties etc. Our singer came on looking like Simon Cowell. Getting the look right is proving to be a bridge too far for our band, we could stick our guitarist and singer behind a curtain and it wouldn't detract from the "live performance"......ho hum.
Hello, Might be looking for a change soon and have always wanted a musicman 5. Just curious about the £150 spent on neck refretting etc. It looks like quite a new bass and I have not heard of these needing a refret or dress at a young age. I dont mean to imply anything just curious if it was major work for some reason or just a thorough set up? Thanks, Nathan
Pm'd
I've just `rediscovered' StingRay basses recently and am now using a teal green 4 stringer for a lot of pub gigs that I'm now doing whilst the downturn has robbed me of a great deal of corporate work! The sound is perfect - a real underpinning bass sound. Are you looking at trades at all? Nick
Hi Nick, Would really want a sale, but would (slightly, possibly) consider a trade for a different config SR 4 (currently have a single H). Thanks Julian........65 basses I thought my 6 was bad enough....

Am selling my Natural MM 5, bought on here about 10 months ago. Bass in great nick and has been played in anger twice, not giving it enough use to justify it's place in my downsized musicroom. Some pics from my purchase can be found here - Stingray 5 Pics Bought for £700 and had about £150 worth of neck redressing and refretting by Strings and Things (MM UK Reseller). Am looking for my purchase price. Anyone interested? Edit** MM Stingray V serial # E58926 - Natural Gloss finish, maple - completion date 27/03/2007 **
IMO they are just as good so your in safe hands. They are only owned by Peavey, everything else, including R&D and manufacture, is as before, but done in a new office in Chelmsford, Essex. Also remember Peavey of Europe own Trace Elliot, not USA. My Trace Elliot 1048H actually says it was made in Corby! That's not that far from Leicester.
If I ever stop spending to build up a war chest I may be looking at some of the newer gear.......must stop buying basses first though
Any update on this - as I wrote above I have a similar issue wthe an old TE 7 band AH head .
Not yet, still with Tech who was waiting on some circuit diagrams. Had to use my standby TE RAH 300 on Saturday first time in anger, was pooping me pants, but it played like a dream with no issues at all. So I'm convinced my TE 500 has a problem. Am chasing the guy over the weekend to see how things are progressing.
I'm apparently particularly unlucky as every band I've ever been in has been pretty consistently been treated poorly by many venues who were paying peanuts and like royalty by those who were "paying through the nose" for the act. I guess that is the problem with this (and many other!! ) subjects - it is TOTALLY subjective and we can all only make judgements based on our own experiences eh? Things can only get better as someone once said.
IMO you are correct, it's all down to personal experience. Btw you must win today's prize for the most liberal use of smilies -
Due to unforeseen circumstances I am selling my Fender USA Jazz Bass (S1 Switching) in Sunset red. The body is Ash and neck is maple with a rosewood board. The bass is in excellent condition and comes complete with bridge ashtray (professionally installed) and ABS Fender hard case / tools etc. It also comes with a leather strap and strap locks. I am asking only £499 for this (priced to sell as I need the cash quick). I will happily post but I reckon the cost will be around £25 to £30 easy so I would recommend collection. I am close to Junction 7, M5 corridor, near Worcester. Pics.....
I think you may have misread me. I was coming from the point of view that you would be professional. I agree that the amount you charge has nothing to do with your attitude and level of professionalism. You don't just get that in music
Probably did misread Just thought you were stating that that's why people charge so much for weddings to cover this eventuality. Mind you if something horrible did happen to our drummer, we'd have to cancel the wedding casue we'd be partying....Sorry Ian if you read this, just joshing........ -
Here's my view. If your drummer (say) dies in a horrible road accident two days before what are you going to do? Is £350 enough to get you out of the hole without (worst case) suffering a big loss? That's why you charge plenty for weddings - it's insurance. If someone can't do it you have to hire someone in. If your amp breaks you have to go and get a new one. The show must go on, as they say...
IMO Yes it is enough, because I wouldn't look at the fee we're getting for this one gig, I'd take a much longer term view in terms of fees. Just because you don't charge the same amount doesn't mean that your not as professional. I could cite many top bands who bale out of playing gigs beacause of the smallest reasons and cheapo bands like mine who will do almost anything to make the gig. -
+1000!!! If you valued yourselves at that level, you could hardly complain about being treated like trash by venues etc could you? Just IMHO and no offence intended, but really!!
Just wondered why how much you charge as a band changes how you should be treated by venues. We don't go out for much more that this an we've hardly ever been treated poorly, on the contrary we've had nothing but respectful treatment from all the venues we currently play. If we get treated like sh*te we don't go back. Admittedly it's a paid hobby, can't see the link between how much you choose to charge and how your treated, and if there is what's the benchmark for good treatment? -
This is why we have our own DJ...... He's spot on every time, act's as MC when we are off stage and is on hand during the show.
I've hated reading your posts in this thread, no sign of envy honest..... But this one has me thinking, how much gear does your DJ use for sound and lighting, I'm sure this could be a way forward.....We have lights and light controllers, not disco lighting I grant you but I would guess for a simple investment we could provide this service as well, we're already putting Ipods through our PA when necessary but to provide a DJ service is something I hadn't thought of....... -

Jeez, it's reading a thread like this that makes you realise how cheap my band are. We're way out of this league although we will only take a booking for wedding if the punters have seen us. In fact it's on the back of us playing pubs that we get wedding bookings. Ho hum......... -
Try taking the graphic out (e.g. depress the graphic in/out button) if you lose sound - I have known of a couple of people who have had this problem and the fault lay with a malfunction of the eq board. As for the effects loop, jumper the effects send and return with a short cable and see if that helps. A good session with the amp - hoovering, cleaning, servisol, resoldering... will do wonders. If that fails, then it's off to a tech... get them to check the components - esp capicators as they are prone to breakdown.
Thanks, although I panicked on Saturday and it's already with him........
The issue may be a dodgy lead - jack to jack so until this Weds when I try again (and replace the lead) I won't know. Even then the issue was intermittent. Dodgy lead could cause this as could dodgy amp!
Hi all new leads and wireless unit, I'm sure it's not that, infact I was fairly sure it was my bass until I saw the input gain LEDs and my tuner responding to playing my bass. Hope you unit is ok, my amp is prob 10 years old and so to be expected, would hope that new TE units are build to last as long as the older ones!! Thanks
That's such an annoying problem. Does it cut out completely or is it a loss of power with still some signal level and possibly very distorted ? I have the latter problem with an old AH150 (?) head. Had it serviced by GM audio a few years back but it came back. It could be the send/return jack(s) where the contacts have lost their spring and tarnished / oxidised enough to cause the problem. I had a similar problem on the insert point of a mixer. Loud notes might 'break through' the barrier and things might be fine for a while before it fails again. Anyway - get some Caig DeOxit cleaner and give them a good clean as per the directions - also other jacks etc while you're about it. Good Luck
Mainly loss of power almost completely, sometimes very very feight sound, but not so you'd notice it. The distortion is interesting point though as I do get this as well. Have changed all cables and normal points of failure. Could be that Age is catching up with the amp, I'm heopful that the tech will sort it out when he services it, thanks for your views sounds a very similar problem.

Yep I get this, feels like you have splinters in your fingers....I reckon it's just down to playing to the amount of playing I doing at the mo. Was worried about playing on Friday, but managed to get on with it.

My TE 500 AH has been cutting out on me when gigging. On Sat, lost volume on Song#2, came back and played for another 2.25 hrs withoug problem then failed on the final track. I've been putting this down to the MM Stingray as I thought the Jack Socket was playing up (Again, new batteries btw). Went to my local store and explained the problem to the guy who has done may of my set-ups and repairs in the past. He felt that it could be the send / receive effects loop (never used) that was cutting in and out. Anyone come across this before, for the first time I noticed that the Input Gain Led's were flashing although there was little / no volume which suggested something was getting through to the amp. I having the thing serviced but am interested in anyone elses experiences with TE problems of this nature. Thanks
I good way of getting back on it I would say is joining a band. You get money from it, and have a damn good time playing live too.
+1 Even the most boring tune can be really fun when playing to an audience, the bass playing almost becomes secondary to the enjoyment of gigging.
