2. I've got a pile of BGM magazines covering most of 2007/8/9, which have to go in my pre baby clearout. If anyone lives local enough to collect these and can be bothered to actually turn up and collect them, then they're free to a good home
3. I've decided that with a baby on the way I can't find the time to be in two bands so one of them has to go. It'll be an amicable split and they're a great bunch of guys. We're playing a mixture of cheesy crap like Mustang Sally, Teenage Kicks, SHA and Oasis, but also some more interesting stuff like Crowded House, Barenaked Ladies, Primal Scream, Stereophonics, Billy Idol, U2, Manics, Clapton, Who, Zutons, Undertones, Queen, Steve Earle. We're based between Portsmouth and Chichester and practise in West Stoke Village hall near Chichester. Gigs are already booked in Portsmouth, Bognor and Chichester but I'll honour any existing commitments until the new bassist feels confident to take over. Everyone is aged 40s and up. As for ability, I play the songs pretty much as they're on record so tight, solid, reliable playing is the main requirement. BVs would be an asset but I don't sing so not essential.
4.
I know someone will mention it, so might as well be the first. Barefaced cabs all the way. and now lighter than ever.
A gnat's over 30lbs for the compact. Worth buying just for the light weight alone but also sounds great and is relatively cheap.
5.
So what do we actually MAKE over here, and where do those profits go once your cash is in the till of the retailer? Take Ashdown as an example, yes they are a British company, but aren't MAGs made in China? Therefore does buying a MAG over something from a company like Behringer really do much good for 'keeping it British'? Cheers, James
Obviously British owned/Chinese manufactured provides less economic benefit to the UK than British owned and manufactured or even foreign owned/British manufactured but when the bottom line is price, manufacturing chases cheap labour. I would still buy a Chinese Ashdown over a Behringer for instance but as rule I try to avoid buying anything made in China As well as what's already been mentioned Hiwatt I think, The Ashdown Klystron range, Status and a whole load of small luthiers like Overwater and Shuker. Sadly this is the pattern of British manufacturing. We excel at producing high quality or bespoke products for niche markets. We seem to produce huge quantities of great designers, engineers and inventors who start up small companies but once they get to a certain size and level of success ( as bassmansky stated ) they get bought up by foreign companies.
6.
we love to knock our own prouducts in this country!(Not like the french or germans)
So true. Certain (now defunct) companies have left behind a poisonous legacy. I don't want to go too far off topic but you are correct about the French and Germans. They buy their own products (particularly cars) and as a result are now officially out of recession.
7.
if you like an indistinct woolly sound then ashdown should deliver
Great contribution. You must be very proud
8. The ABMs are great sounding heads if you like a fat vintage type sound but it's not a sound everyone will like. I've used an ABM500 for 5 years through various cab setups and it mostly sounds fantastic. Best of all were a Schroeder 410L and Barefaced Compact. What a great sound. I've never been overly fond of some of their cabs but again that is just my personal preferance. I also used a MAG combo in a heavy rock band, competing against two guitards with Les Pauls and Marshall 4x10s, every week for about 2 years and it coped very well with no problems. This is an interesting thread http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=445456 Ashdown get a lot of appreciation on TB. Americans seem to be more open minded and less inclined to the corrosive negativity we are so good at in this country
I'm soooooo bored at hearing that Ashdowns are woolly.
It is getting incredibly tedious. It usually starts with some retard saying something along the lines of "I tried one in a shop for 30 seconds and it sounded fooking sh*te". Well don't buy it then you f***ing dimwit but spare us your expert opinion. You only need to look at the number of players at all levels who swear by Ashdown. I guess it's the Fender effect. It's a successful brand so there are always going to be people who take delight in bashing it.
9. I've owned various Ashdown ABM cabs and have never been totally happy with any of them. They are very solidly constructed and good value for money but don't do the heads justice IMO.
10. Great stuff
11. I'd have the setup I've got. LMIII + Barefaced Compact and US Standard Precision. Having gigged with it for the first time tonight I would say for all round sound and portability I can't think of anything that comes close. There are probably megamoney rigs that sound as trouserflapping good, but nothing I could carry through a crowded bar, downstairs, through another crowded bar, then another 300 yards to the car, all in one trip and not be out of breath when I got there. But maybe I'd have a custom shop Precision, probably a Pino cos I like the colour.
12. What is the damage exactly? Edit: If it's a DeArmond Pilot you're unlikely to find a new one as they're discontinued but they're not expensive to buy. I think you're gonna have to come clean and own up to it
13.
You meant, Ampeg B15, mate? But, when talking about Jamerson, I don't get one thing - some of his lines are really difficult to play, especially those 16-note chromatic passages, and so on, so, how the hell could he managed to play that stuff with one finger and sky-high action, you tell me..? I mean, is this really true, that his bass action was that high, and he played just with one finger? (didn't he, for e.g. use some sort of double-pick tech for fast stuff, a la Doug Wimbish?)
Yeah B15, I've no doubt you're right, but it contributed greatly to his tone is what I'm getting at although on a lot of stuff I think he went direct into the desk. He famously had an action so high that his Funk Machine is generally thought to be more or less unplayable by anyone else. Part of the answer may be that he was originally a double bass player and developed incredible hand strength. He must have had some sort of double pick technique considering what he played. Apart from that vid of him backing Marvin Gaye, which has been posted on here a couple of times, there doesn't seem to be a lot of footage of him playing in existence. A sign of the times I guess.
14.
James Jamerson 'The Tone is in Your Fingers'
James Jamerson's style, technique and creativity might might have come from his brain and his fingers but his tone was all '62 Precision with sky high action, never changed flatwounds and Ampeg Portabass. Great idea for a thread. I hope it doesn't get derailed in the usual BC fashion.
15. Yeah. Hardly worth it for a pile of mags
16. Still available
17. It depends whether you mind a bit of a drive. I live at the bottom end of the A3 and I don't mind meeting halfway.
18. There isn't any great secret to it. Just listen to the bass drum and try and lock in with it. Unfortunately how easy it is to do depends very much on the quality of the drummer. What rslaing said is very true and once you've had a bit of experience doing it it'll all become clear to you. A good drummer makes it easy for you and everything sounds great, but playing with a poor drummer is very frustrating. It kind of drains all your technique. It's difficult to explain exactly if you haven't done it. I wouldn't pay too much attention to the drum parts on the record. Learn the bass rhythms and then you'll adapt it to the style of the guy you're playing with. It sounds more complicated than it actually is.
19. I've got a complete set of Bassist mags from mid nineties to early 2000s. Free to a good home. Collection only due to the weight but can meet halfway within reason for the cost of my diesel.
20. The LH500 head has been getting a lot of good reviews even compared to much more expensive heads. How about a Hydrive cab?
21.
Austria
Ah. I think we assumed you were in the USA. Maybe looking at Thomann's website would be a good place to start
22. I'm not sure how relevant any advice we could give would be because the range of gear available over here is much more limited than what's available in the USA. Browsing some of the big US retailers websites is almost enough to make anyone living in Europe cry. The sheer amount of choice and low prices beats any retailer over here with the exception of maybe Thomann, although I haven't done a direct comparison of prices. Having a quick look here http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/na...ge=4&rpp=20 You've got a choice of GK Backline, Eden Nemesis, Ashdown MAG, Hartke, Acoustic, Kustom and Peavey, all available from one shop, and all of which would make a pretty respectable first rig. These are all good budget makes. Maybe approaching it from a different angle, find out what's available in your area or within your price range and then ask opinions. Also we are all a bit in the dark about the quality of the big American retailers. You see lots of GC bashing on TB but what about Musicians Friend, Bass Northwest etc?
23.
Years ago I had the Trace 1215H combo, same amp but with a single 15" driver and hf horn. I bought a 2103H cab to go with it (2x10 + HF horn). When I plugged the 2103 in, I couldn't hear the 15" driver in the combo, unplugging it produced very little reduction in volume, so I'm reluctant to go down the 2x10 + 1x15 route.
Good point. The speaker experts will tell you that mixing driver sizes without using an active crossover can give mixed results and my experience has always borne this out. I've used the 2x10 + 1x15 combination from various different manufacturers and was never totally happy with the sound. It was very inconsistent and produced totally unpredictable sounds in different environments. If I was in your position, rather than going back to square one with a new setup I would try picking up a used 2x10 or 4x10 and see how it sounded, then if you don't like the results you can get your money back by selling it on
24. I think you're on the right track already in that you don't have enough speaker cone area to produce the volume you're after. The Trace is a great combo with quite a bright cut-through sound so I think changing your head to GK or Ashdown would be counter productive. Adding another cab would certainly help. Used Trace and Ashdown ABM 2x10s, 4x10s and 1x15s can be picked up relatively cheaply but you don't need to limit yourself to those two manufacturers unless you want a TE cab to match the appearance of your combo
