Once again, Im a little put off. I know not all of them are like this, but I expect good things for near on £600.
Yes exactly. For the sort of money they cost you're into the upper echelons of boutique cabs. You just don't hear of these kind of problems with other cab makers.
I am well aware of issues with QC at Schroeder recently on another now locked forum thread. I thought it would be informative to all to pass on my personal experience. From the start Shaun at SHX is a star and I have no complaint or grievance with him or his company. My story is I ordered a new 21012 in carpet. Shaun had none, and offered me one in Rhino, I prefer carpet as I am a bit trad and of a certain age. Anyway I agreed to have the Rhino cab. The thing to be frank was not what I would expect for £700 odd. It rattled and groaned and flexed terribly. The rattle was from the grill not being able to be secured in the RHS bottom corner cause the wooden block was split where the screw was. I took the grill off to asssertain this only to reveal that the main baffle board was infact made of two pieces, joined very poorly with black gunk. Also the cuts made for the handles etc were very poorly made and several different sized screws used to secure said handle. It was a proverbial Friday afternoon job! I contacted Shaun, and to his credit he replaced the cab with a 410L carpet personally delivered one evening before one of his gigs and I commend him for that. The new cab is poles apart, its well made, sounds absolutely fabulous, is loud and precise, and tbh what I expected and paid for. Shaun even said on delivery, this looks like a whole lot better cab. Conclusion: I have no complaint with SHX and am happy to complement Shaun and his exemplary service, I just feel perhaps Schroeder went thru a poor patch right around when I purchased my cab. Further conclusion is that I've done 2 outdoor gigs with the 410 now, a wedding and a party and it's been fabulous, loud, thick, lovely and throws the sound more than I've ever experienced. Brilliant cabs. If this thread gets locked by mods I will understand, but what can I say, everything is true and my experience.
Sounds pretty similar to what I experienced with my 1212L. I assume you're referring to the thread on TB which unfortunately descended into a bit of a slanging match. I'd like to add to what I said there that Shaun at SHX couldn't have dealt with the matter any better. I also have absolutely no complaint about his service and as far as I know the 1212L I bought from him was shipped directly to me from Schroeder so he probably didn't see it. Having said that it seems that Schroeder do make a habit of shipping substandard cabs. The argument that they've just slipped through the QC net doesn't really hold water because the POS that they fobbed me off with had so many glaringly obvious faults it's inconceivable that they shipped it unknowingly. I've bought a lot of gear in my 25 or so years of playing and I've never had a single issue with any other amp or cab and only once with a bass. To pay the sort of money Schroeders go for and get something with that many faults was very disappointing.
There seems to be a lot of love for a Markbass LMII paired to a Bareface Compact or Bigone. Cheers,
Oh yes. Lots of love for that combination here

None of that ThunkTwangSlappitySlap nonsense that Youtube is full of. Great tone, technique and melodic playing. Nice bass too.

Welcome to BC. I also take a keen interest in your posts on TB. It's always good to read such a knowledgeable and unbiased viewpoint. +1 for Alex's cabs. I've got a compact and it is fantastic.
While I'm at it, is it just me or does anyone else think we're not really getting anywhere? Don't get me wrong, it's a very interesting discussion and all, but........ I dunno..... what does the OP think so far?
The OP has been given plenty of reasons by various posters why he found one combo apparently louder than the other and seems to be ignoring it all. To say one combo "blew away" the other is a totally subjective statement and is entirely dependant on what he regards as a desirable bass sound.
there is also the matter that some songs are built around the bass line imagine BERNADETTE by the four tops without prominent bass tone
I'm not quite sure what your point is here. All Motown music was mixed with the bass upfront in the mix. I wouldn't call a Precision with flats played through a Ampeg Portaflex a cut through bass sound.
So its good then for... I dont know what i am playing, having a fumble, And hope know one can hear me... sound? Thanks, one to look out for then. Garry
I assume the means your post is tongue-in-cheek. Leaving aside the Ashdown content in this thread my aim is always to sit in the mix and lock in with the drummer, and create the power and punch that fills up the bottom end of the band. To me, the phrase “cutting through the mix” implies a mid prominent sound that has no separation from the guitars and only satisfies the criteria of being able to hear yourself rather than making the band sound good. There is a vast area of middle ground between fumbling around because you can't hear youself and sounding like a baritone guitar.
just wondered if any tech-heads could explain in plain english after all, you would expect a 300 watt amp to be louder than a 100 watt amp, not three times louder but definitely louder, IMO
The English above looks pretty plain to me. As has been stated it's not 300watts but probably more like 180 without an extension speaker. That is not enough to make an audible difference in volume if all else is equal. If the Ashdown is voiced with a bass heavy sound it won't sound as loud as an amp that has a mid prominent voicing. If your desired result is to cut through the mix then the Hartke will probably do a better job.
-
surely an aluminium speaker cant make that much difference
Probably not but the internal EQ of the amp will. If the MAG is voiced anything like my ABM then it will have quite a bottom heavy sound and won't cut through as well as the Hartke. If "cutting through the mix" is the bag you're into then Ashdown probably isn't for you. FWIW I've done a similar comparison with a MAG C115 250 and a Hartke combo (140w, 1x12 I think) and if Basschat had existed back then I probably would have posted a thread to say I'd drawn the polar opposite conclusion to you. It's all about what sound works for you.

This made me LOL. Kinda like the drumming equivalent of a few famous slap monster bass players I can think of.
I spoke to Proel today and they basically said that it was my fault, as I wasn’t pairing it with Markbass cabs! I have it running through two EBS neo 112’s, both 8 ohm cabs. So…is this a Markbass issue, or is it the Gallery’s fault for not making me aware that the LMII can’t be used with any non-MB cabs?
I've never heard of that before. I think they're talking crap. If it's only 8 months old can't you take it back to the dealer you bought it from. It's their responsibility to honour the warranty rather than Proel, who are the importer. Edit: Having read your post properly I see you got it from The Gallery. I'm sure they'll sort it under warranty. As long as you haven't been running it below the minimum load recommended by Markbass, which is 4 ohms, then the make of speaker you use with it is irrelevant.
Their prices are a bit steep too.
Yes. £1895 for a used SVT CL. eek

The EA iAMP 500 and iAMP 800 will both run at 2 ohms.
Are we overlooking the variable that is which valve you put into the preamp ? I've changed the valve in my ABM from a standard 12AX7 to a GT one (can't remember exact model) and it was very different.
What difference did that make? I find the valve in my ABM goes from having not a lot of effect to full on farty distortion within about an eigth of a turn of the level control, and I've been thinking about changing it to get a more gradual breakup. It's an Electro Harmonix 12AX7 at the moment

If you can't get that sound live I would suggest that the main culprit is the Schroeder. It probably doesn't have the low down thump that you need for that kind of sound. That's not intended as a criticism of the Schroeder as they are fine cabs but just don't do a traditional sound well IME I can get pretty close to JD's sound using my Precision with D'addario Chrome flats through an Ashdown ABM head into a Barefaced compact, albeit at a living room volume. It's a very old school type of sound and pretty much treble free
-
"Back in the day". What the hell does that mean?
-
For an even lighter rig how about 1 or 2 Barefaced Compacts? These are 1x15 and weigh only about 30lbs and are very easy to carry. I had a Schroeder 1212L and sold it as soon as I had used a Compact for the first time. The Compact is probably not as apparently loud as the Schroeder, which is fairly mid prominent, but produce a more even response that goes down further and is very efficient. At 8 ohms you could drive a pair with any of the heads you mention and that would give you an ear bleedingly loud rig. At £425 delivered they are also probably cheaper than any of the cabs you list.

How to tell if this is a fake fender?

It's another one that someone "found" whilst clearing out an elderly relative's loft. I really must get into this hoiuse clearance malarkey -
+1 for Scotchbrite, but remember to use a new piece and not the one out of the kitchen sink with bits of food stuck to it I used it on a '62 re-issue Jazz and it does a good job of just taking the gloss off without removing much varnish, and after a while the movement of your thumb up and down the neck may re-polish it so you'll have to do it again. Obviously if you want to remove more finish from the back of the neck you would need to use one of the other methods mentioned here

If you want a nice phat, vintage, tubey tone then not many amps do it better, but for an uncoloured hi-fi like sound you should look elsewhere. I've got an ABM500 and I love it.

Here's one I sold a while ago. I got it from GAK. If you do a bit of phoning around you can generally find them. They just don't seem to be as popular as the ones with rosewood boards.
Just re-read this and I thought it was Bass Guitar Magazine not Bass Gear Mag - my mistake
Ah I was a bit surprised to hear that WHS were stocking it
