Does playing covers sap your imagination and playing
DirkThrust replied to dabootsy's topic in General Discussion
I think that any group will sap your imagination and creativity if you let it, be it covers or originals. Beyond heavy improv based groups, can you think of any group that does not keep playing the same songs (written by them or others) over and over (to varying degrees) at gigs/events? You are responsible for being creative and imaginative. Yes, I acknowledge some environments are easier to be creative in than others, so doesn't that mean if you can thrive in a restrictive environment, then your creative ability will prosper in an unrestricted one. Why can you not be imaginative and creative doing covers? Are you really restricted to doing things exactly as recorded? Are you telling me that you can't think of something else that could work with that song, or perhaps even improve upon it, either on your instrument or someone else's? Surely that is a great opportunity to be creative and imaginative right there... Mark
Yes absolutely right. The most sensible post in this whole windy thread. -
Great stuff. Melodic and quite dark and dramatic with good tone and technique.

Tune_O_Matic's listings seem to have started appearing on e-bay UK along with the crazy German. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=360060564829 But what a beautiful bass It's one of his "time capsule" specials. I'd love to know where he gets them from.

It's our old friend Tune_O_Matic trading under a different ID. So even if it's genuine, it's hugely overpriced.

I know exactly what you mean. Basically using spare fingers to mute unused strings. After playing the note the finger comes to rest on the string above. My teacher tried to instill that technique into me without much success. I think perhaps that I've been playing too long and have become too stuck in my ways to adapt to it but with his good technique it was very effective.
I’d have a tendency to agree very much with Andy that it tends to be the Ashdown cabs that cause the problems (to my ears and in my opinion) so the Schroeder and BFM cabs would be a great place to start if you were to buy a cab to compliment your Evo II.
Ha. I'm glad we agree on something
Although I am kinda on the lookout for a one cab lightweight solution, and the 4ohm Schroeder 410 keeps catching my eye, so it's nice to hear that someone thinks they match the EVO heads well!
I used a 410L with the ABM for a while. The bigger Schroeders don't have the mid hump of the 1212 and 1210 and are more of an even sounding cab but are still a good match with the Ashdown. It's a great single cab setup

Glad to hear it. Ashdown get a lot of bashing which IMO and IME is not really justified. I've used my ABM500 with various cabs since I got it in 2003 and with the right cab pairing it sounds great. At the moment I'm using a Schroeder 1212L and it sounds perfect. The pairing is a great match with a smooth warm sound and not a trace of boom or wool and enough punch to crack walls. I've always found Schroeder and BFM cabs to be a particularly good match for Ashdown heads.

He's used another seller's listing as a template but hasn't changed all the information to be accurate for his bass. Plonker
If we post pics of the instrument we are after it might jog memories!
I haven't got a picture of it, but I do remember someone had inflicted a bit of DIY butchery on the nut and cut the slots way too deep.

I had a Hot rodded Precision in Olympic White/Tortoiseshell which I sold around 2002. I can't even remember selling it now, or who to, or what moment of madness made me do it, but I would dearly like that back.

I vote for Glenn Hughes based on his time with Deep Purple. Not just a superb player but awesome sound and one of the greatest voices in Rock music.

I Probably Paid Over The Odds But....
DirkThrust replied to Macko1968's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I don't think you've paid over the odds. You do see the odd bargain Stingray going for silly money but I've seen less desirable ones than yours going for more money. That one's a real beauty too. -

I'm selling my pair of Bill Fitzmaurice designed Omni 10.5s. I'm not in a band at the moment and with nothing even remotely on the horizon I have no need for these to be taking up space in the house. They are fitted with Eminence Beta 10s so are each rated at 250 watts and 8 ohms and each weigh 26lbs. As you can see they are very well constructed and I've paid great attention to detail in their construction. They are covered in TuffCab, a special purpose speaker cab textured coating, which is very durable and easy to clean. I'm looking for £300 the pair or £175 each. They are great sounding cabs, as good or better than any commercially available. I'm in south Hampshire but I don't mind delivering up to 100 miles or meeting halfway. I will give a full refund to any buyer who is not totally happy with these cabs.

Now I think of it I tried a Mexican 62 reissue Jazz in GAK about 18 months ago and the quality was astonishingly good. I was specifically looking for a '62 in Oly white with a tortie plate and they had a US and a Mex in. For the difference in price (I think the MIM was £699 and the USA £1199) there was not much difference in quality. If it hadn't said MIM on the headstock I think the only way to tell the difference without doing a direct A/B would be to look at the hardware, as Burpster said. MInd you the hardware on the USA reissue isn't exactly high quality. In the end I went for the US model (the one in my avatar) because it just seemed to have more sprang and bounce, if you know what I mean. Then again that could have been a bit of subliminal guitar snobbery influencing my thought process.

I tried a 57 Re-issue in Guitar village in Farnham a couple of months ago. IIRC it was red with a gold anodised scratchplate. I went in there to buy one of the 2008 US standards but the '57 was just begging to be picked up and played. It was very nice indeed. The neck seemed a bit bigger than the US standard but I was seriously tempted to buy it instead of the USA model. THe build quality was top notch, good setup and no dead spots. For the price it was a real bargain.
MB1. It really does ,depend on what speaker configuration you want to use,I, like Mr Machines use Ashdown 10s with a Status bass and theyre far from wooly and undefined.
+1. Speaker type makes an enormous difference. I used mine through Schroeder cabs and it sounded awesome. No boom or wooliness. Just warm, fat and incredibly punchy. OTOH using it with just a 1x15 it was pretty underwhelming to my ears, but to someone who likes the vintage sound it could be just right.

Not really my kind of music, but very impressive all the same. Excellent playing and recording and as tight as a gnat's chuff.
