How about some scotchbrite grey pad rubbed over the back and some Truoil gunstock finish. The Scotchbrite is like 00 wire wool but doesn't leave any bits. [/quote +1 for Scotchbrite The back of the neck on my 62 re-issue Jazz was lacquered and felt sticky. The advantage of Scotchbrite is that it is quite gentle and takes the shine off the lacquer without actually removing too much of it.
That was the gist of what I was thinking
It's all these 40+ years old Fenders that are in mint condition that puzzles me. Where has that bass been for 42 years? I would think that normally you would expect to very occasionally see a bass that had been stored under someones bed for nearly half a century, but just lately they seem to be appearing quite frequently.
Im really suprised this hasn't sold for £250 it's a bargin. Its obviosuly finished to a high standard and these things are fantastic. I a/b'd my markbess 102HF with one of these cabs and it was by far the better cab. Its alot more mid heavy then most are used too (well its not mid heavy its just a level response which most cab builders seem to not do when making a bass cab) this thing will make you heard on stage. For those hunting for clear tone what you put in you get out, you can't go far wrong. The only reason Im not biting his arm off is I have two 10.5 crossfires on the build and they wont sit on top of this cab because mine are wder. Try popping this up on finnbass alot of people go there when looking into BFM cabs.
Thanks Sugden. I'll give it a try

+1 for Bill Fitzmaurice, although strictly speaking he doesn't actually make speaker cabinets
stop bothering us?
I don't think he's really bothering anyone. It's an ebay listing. Looking at it is optional BTH I find him quite entertaining. He is obviously not daft. Whatever anyone's opinion about buying vintage basses or buying vintage basses unseen from another country with a different legal system, he bought from a supposedly reputable dealer and got well and truly shafted. If these listings warn people off that particular dealer then good luck to him. -
Before this the only woodwork I'd done was putting up shelves and simple DIY, if you follow the plans there really aren't many ways to go wrong, worst comes to the worst you use a bit more wood up.
Same here. You pick it up as you go along and make plenty of mistakes. Fortunately mistakes with 1/2" ply are not too costly.
You still want more?! I hear it can be quite an addictive hobby this old cab building...
It certainly is. After reading this thread I've got a bad case of BFM GAS. I'm thinking of making a sub for my Omni10.5s. That would make a monster rig.
The feature on Bernard Edwards is a preview from my forthcoming book: Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards - Funk & Disco Grooves. The mag got a bit of a revamp recently - we now have a new approach to reviews, and will only be reviewing new stuff from now on. Stu
That's a pity. I like seeing reviews of old stuff. It's interesting to compare the vintage "classics" to current gear. Still, I guess you can't please all the people all the time Great to see the new Fenders tested though, and the article on cables. These are both topics that have been discussed at length on here recently.
I find it hard to understand how a small amp could sound like an Eden or Ampeg. If you want something to use for practice, maybe you should try a Tascam Bass Trainer. If you just want an amp then just but an amp. If you want effects then get a pedal. When you get, "All In One" things there is always a compromise somewhere. I have tried to re-word this post so I don't come across with an attitude but I cant, sorry. I love my Hartke A100 combo, a nice clean sound, fast response, nice bottom end. Great for practice, jamming or even small gigs. I actually use it more than my Eden setup. I picked it up off the 'Bay for £150 (£249 new)
Ooh, you've got such an attitude The scenario you are describing is the exact one I wanted to avoid when I got this thing. A practise amp is intended for practise. It's not supposed to be an All-in-one anything. No one would seriously suggest that a 30w 1x8 could do what an Ampeg SVT does. It just gives a range of different bass sounds based on different classic amps. Fun to play with but ultimately useless. Likewise with effects, it gives the user a taste of most different effects available without having to go out and buy expensive pedals that wont get much use. Sometimes I don't want to learn a song off a CD or program a drum machine. I just want to plug into something and play and maybe get some inspiration from it. This is a small combo that sits in a corner for when it's needed. It's not supposed to be a gig rig. It does a bit of everything. The B-DEC is a compromise. That's exactly what it's supposed to be. It's expensive for a practise combo but a lot cheaper than buying a CD-BT1 + effects + drum machine/metronome + backing tracks, and it still does a whole lot more than all those things can do.

I would suggest that you'd be better off posting this question on Finnbass. There are a lot more people on there who have or are in the process of building BFMs. IIRC I read one thread by a guy who had his Omni10.5s built by Thumper and he said that Thumper recommended the Beta 10s because of the smoother midrange compared to the Neos. Unfortunately I can't remember who the thread was by.
Just read some of a thread over on TB about cables can affect tone. I didn't read all of the thread because a bunch of egomaniacs trying to outdo each other by listing their various credentials is positively yawn inducing.
Ha ha, just read it. Absolutely priceless. No one does arguing quite like a bunch of gobby Americans

I've got one of those. It's a great practise tool, though not the be all and end all of practising. It's got a whole load of loops of every different music style, which you can play continuously and practise along with. You can also do a whole load of different things to each loop like taking all the bass and other instruments out so it's just drums. You can add effects to your bass sound. It's got overdrive, fuzz, flange, chorus, phaser, wah, delay and more. You can speed up or slow down. There are also a lot of amp models like the classic Fender Bassman, Ampeg, Eden, Trace Elliot and upright. You also get a method book with it that has all the loops written out in tab and proper musical notation. It does far more than I've listed here, I've barely scratched the surface of it. It's a lot of fun to play with and you can easily lose an afternoon to it. It's a good motivational tool and I would definitely recommend it. Whether you think it's worth £250, only you can decide that.
Those wanting an on-topic discussion about Thomann's service should probably look at the thread title... I suspect the common service problem with UK musical instrument etc shops lies with the vast majority of the employees being wannabe rock stars. But I can't see many failed rock stars wanting to work for Thomann's online sales department where they don't get to show off their 'chops'. Maybe if you visit their real shop you can get the service you know and dread... Alex
I think you've got it exactly right.
