True enough Though John Entwhistle , Phil Lynott and Jaco are looking a bit rough!
They all led fairly "interesting" lives though.
I think at the time Ashdown did a recall on a batch of ABM's as they had a problem with the adhesive not bonding the ply and the tolex. As for the mute, I tried the one in the shop when I returned mine and it did the same.
I see
Upon return to the retailer I was told that 'they all do that'. Refund please!
If the retailer says so it must be true. Odd that mine never has.
It's just a solid, meaty sound, and when I used my OD pedal I was pretty much decided that I needed one. Exactly the sound I'm looking for, not something flashy for slapping, just a full on, heavy, dependable sound.
+1 It's a great sound. I've owned an ABM500 for many years. It can sound a bit woolly under some circumstances, but the setup you're talking about should sound really good. 2x10 + 4x10 will certainly make the audience want to visit the lavatory.

When playing my 62 re-issue Jazz I get a lot of high frequency noise whenever one hand is in contact with the strings and moving, for instance sliding my hand up or down the neck produces a kind of crackling, hissing, spitting static-like noise (it's very difficult to describe a noise). With the other hand touching the strings it's ok, so playing normally it's fine. If I take one hand off to play an open string it makes this noise, and it's loud enough that I'm afraid of damaging my speakers' horn. It does it with two different amps, two different cabs and I've changed all my leads so I have concluded that it is the bass. Has anyone got any ideas?
What sort of trades are you after?
I'm gonna use the money to buy a Precision since I can't live without one so I would trade for a P but the sale is now on hold pending actually doing the deal. Just haven't had a chance to amend the post which I'm doing now. -
is that a Chinese elm bonsai in the back there?
It's a Bonsai of some sort. I'm not too sure of the exact breed though It was a wedding present from my brother. Unfortunately it's stuck out in the conservatory because there isn't enough light elsewhere in the house. -

+1. I had a Q10XD, which is a 4x10 and it sounded amazing but it weighed about 95lbs which was just too much for me. That was a few years ago and at that time there were no UK importers, and they are still very rare over here for some reason. On Talkbass though, they rave about how good they are, particularly the model you mention, so I think 250 Euros is a real bargain.

I've always been a bit perplexed when people say they hate the Ashdown sound. With certain bass and cab combinations and EQ settings they can sound woolly but for a fat, warm valve type sound there really is nothing better short of an SVT.
Its not as if he could make it any uglier with the stupid big pickguard on those things.
+1. The SR4 is a beautiful instrument. How the hell it evolved into those hideous things God only knows. Let him butcher it. It can only be an improvement.
I recently watched some Bass solo vid's on Youtube and I was suprised by how much they did NOT interest me.I feel like a traitor to bass players everywhere.I found I did'nt get off on extra fast shredding,or two hand taps.Slap by Wooten, sorry, not for me.I'm more impressed by a good groove or run in a song.I know that I will get some flak for this but I feel its time to come clean;to me bass is supportive.
I agree with you too. All the flash noodling for the sake of it leaves me pretty underwhelmed, and I don't think most bass players aspire to that sort of playing so I don't think you're being a traitor. What really impresses me though is when the bass player is playing melodically, yet it makes the song. For instance a lot of James Jamerson's playing is almost like a bass solo all the way through the song, but it never sounds like overplaying.

The point I was making before (maybe not very well) is that the recognition of Dyslexia as a genuine condition is comparatively recent. Before that Dyslexics were labelled as lazy or stupid at an early age and struggled to overcome a very genuine handicap I don't believe for one minute that this guy is Dyslexic. It's just a convenient excuse for laziness or ignorance and if I was genuinely Dyslexic I would be really angry about someone devaluing the condition like that.
I think the benefit of doubt needs to be given until proven otherwise. Besides which we have at least one other member who is dyslexic that I know of and we should be tolerant. If you don't like reading the posts its possible to use the forums ignore function. Feel free to PM me if you need some help on how to find it. Can we get this thread back on topic please?
wot eva u elderly man

He's auctioning off the cabs seperately and he states they are fitted with Ashdown blueline drivers "As advised by Mark Gooday" apparently. Look nice though
But anyway, to the point, this EB180H has a VU meter, now i know these are just for show really but, every picture I've seen the head doesn't have the VU meter like this... only the 180 combo does.
I have one of those on my ABM500 and I have always found it to be very useful. It's the Dogs' for setting up the input level.

There are also a lot of build diaries on FinnBass, including Thumper's, who is BFM's authaurized builder.
thanks ever so much guys, ive just ordered the plans now, i cant wait to get started! If anyone has any real top tips id be incredibly greatful! cheers guys.
One of the first instructions in the plans is to build a straight edge using three strips of ply glued and screwed together. I did that and I've never actually used it and it wasted a big chunk of the sheet of ply. I just used a metre long ruler which I found was much easier to use. But probably the most essential tool is the saw sled for the circular saw, or some means of making straight accurate cuts with your circular saw. It tells you how to make the saw sled but you may already have some method of making straight cuts.

I'm building an Omni 10 at the moment too, although it seems to be taking many months. I just don't have the time to spend on it. For me half of the reason for building it is the fun of actually making it and seeing it come together. I bought the Beta 10 speakers which cost about £75 for the pair from Blue Aran, and I reckon the rest of the materials cost me about another £60 not including tools. All the rest came from CPC except for screws, glue and black paint which I got from B & Q. I've just had to buy another sheet of ply due to many balls ups and wasted bits so that cost me an extra £17 which I could have avoided if I'd been more careful. But I will have enough left over to build an Omni 10.5 The Ply comes in 8' x 4' sheets which is a bit too big to transport unless you've got a van. The first sheet I got delivered which cost an extra fiver but the second sheet I had the timber yard cut up for me and it fitted in the back of my Focus. When you buy the BFM plans there is a diagram of how to cut up the various sized sheets in order to get maximum useage out of it. He recommends Baltic Birch, which I couldn't get. All that's available round here is Finnish spruce, so I used that. I would go to a proper timber merchant rather than a DIY place.

I'm selling my Schroeder 1210Light due to the imminent completion of a BFM O10, plus I'm not in a band at the moment so I can't really justify keeping it. It's the Neo version so only weighs about 42lbs. It's 1x12 + 1x10 + Tweeter and 4 ohms and 700watts. These are probably the loudest and punchiest small cabs on the market and are a true one cabinet solution for practise and small to medium size gigs. Mint condition. I'm looking for £430 no offers. I'm in South Hants but I don't mind meeting halfway as long as you're not coming from Scotland Since I foolishly sold my Precision I have regretted it so I may consider a trade for a USA P with a possible cash adjustment depending what it is.

HELP MY CURSED SET UP!! WHAT CABS CAN MATCH SUNN 1200s!??
DirkThrust replied to man_at_arms84's topic in Amps and Cabs
Well I have had the WORST luck with gear in the past year, but I have been using the peaveys cabs for nearly a year. (nov 2006) Previously with a peavey Tmax head. No troubles. The T max died. (Long story!!) and was replaced with a fender MB1200 power amp and TB Pre amp until I bought the Sunn. The fender again worked great. But it wasnt mine and I boughtr the sunn. Whilst using my fender Power amp/pre amp My 4X10 was blown whilst lending it out when on tour in July. I couldnt afford to replace all the drivers so I bought a new 4X10. the day before a tour. I played 4 dates with the Sunn/Peavey rig. Then one of the speakers in that 4X10 got blown whilst lending it out again (Dont tell me about it!!). I replaced the blown speaker just two nights ago, with a replacement from peavey. tested it for 5 in the practice room and it seemed fine. It may be worth mentioning a speaker jack got stuck in the amp and we had to break the casing for one of the inputs to get the jack out. this was on the same night. But again afterwards I tested the rig for 5 and it seemed good. Then in sound check at last nights gig, a terrible buzz/fart/popping sound kept occuring. It was so bad, I had to get my marshall cab down for the show. I know have my gear in the van so I havent had a chance to test it again....... Now you see why Im at despair. and thats not mentioning my AMP problems!
Perhaps you should change your user name to The Terminator -
HELP MY CURSED SET UP!! WHAT CABS CAN MATCH SUNN 1200s!??
DirkThrust replied to man_at_arms84's topic in Amps and Cabs
I sincerely hope you're wearing earplugs if your g******t is playing that loud. I don't mean to preach but why don't you ask him to turn down a bit. As for your problems, when the volume is that high it can be difficult to diagnose what is actually going on. It is probably unlikely that your amp is simply too powerful for the cabs if they are farting out so soon. How long have you had that problem? Has it always done it or could you identify a time when it started? What is your playing style like? If you are competing with a loud guitarist it is instinctive to dig in and play very heavily and that could cause your strings to bounce of the frets which at high volume is gonna cause all kinds of unpleasant speaker noises. If you play through the rig without guitar and drums and play cleanly, at what point does it start distorting? The first principle of fault finding is to try and identify where the problem is by eliminating what it isn't. You say you are thinking of getting an 8x10. That would certainly help you be heard by giving a more cut through sound than a 15. Is it possible to do an A/B comparison if you take your cabs along to an Ampeg stockist? If that cures the problem then you know it is the cabs. -
I was in Fret Music in Southampton the other day and they had some Markbass gear in there. They've got the whole range listed on their website but they didn't have a great deal actually in the shop.
