Settle down, Mr. Angry. It's my opinion of course, but they just aren't what they used to be. The stuff just looks cheap and nasty - the subject of this thread is a casein point. Their attempts at digital stuff has been an embarrassment, and left a lot of people with unusable and broken gear. I want them to be great, because they're a British flagship. I just find them disappointing. In my opinion.
My criticism wasn't specifically aimed at you. Just the general snippy tone whenever Ashdown is discussed. If you don't like it then that's fine but I can't see how they can be expected to be great. In the 15 years since they started up, the marketplace has become hugely more competitive and the fact that Ashdown are still a major player is an achievement in itself. FWIW I think it looks pretty good. The silk screening on the front panel is a bit sloppy but the construction itself looks A1 and the looks are a welcome change from all the other identikit lightweight heads.
Yeah - the Little Giant and the Superfly set the world alight... Ashdown were a great name in bass amplification. Now they've been eclipsed by every Tom, Dick and Harry after dropping the ball to many times.
That all hinges on your definition of great. When Ashdown first started they were high end, exclusive and doing something different from all the others. Since then they've gone mass market or down market depending on your mindset. That's just a business decision. Being "eclipsed" is your viewpoint. The sheer amount of Ashdown gear out there speaks for itself. It sells in shops on it's own merit A small number of bashers and GASers on an internet forum drooling over every over hyped new "me too" piece of tat is not the bass playing world The Superfly and LG didn't set the world alight. So what? Why would you expect them to? The Superfly had a really innovative front end and the LGs sell at a price point not many other products match. The worst you can say about Ashdown is they lack focus with too many new products without exhaustive enough real world testing. Some people use them and like them. You don't. Every new product can't set the world alight. Many companies produce duffers. That's just the way it is Criticizing Ashdown because you don't like the VU meter is like criticizing Markbass for being Yellow. Ashdown gets bashed for everything and at every opportunity Edited: To make me seem less angry
Basically an Orange Bass Terror but more money?
I'm sure the price will come down when they start full production in their Chinese sweatshop. Poor old Ashdown, they're a British company who've become successful. How dare they!! Just imagine the shitstorm of bashing that would follow if they'd been caught out blatantly lying about "quasi watts" or some other invention of their marketing department.

THe drummer in another band "I haven't had time to practise since last time" (2 weeks ago) or, when I was trying to explain a simple rhythm change to him because the whole feel of the song and the bassline depended on it "Well I'm not really a musician" You don't say. So i didn't push it. Let him listen to the record I thought, and he'll get it right next time. So.... Next practise (2 weeks later) "I haven't had time to practise since last time" -

I was in a prog/classic rock band and one day the talentless poseur who thought he could sing uttered this immortal line to me "Can't you play like Lemmy/Chris Squire/The bloke out of Hawkwind. Don't worry about filling up the bottom end, John (the keyboard player) can do that with his left hand" F&$k Off!! -
Oh dear oh dear. Watch the Youtube demo...If you dare The internet has a lot to answer for.

Behringer or Harley Benton?! Anything cheap!
DirkThrust replied to throwoff's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've just started playing again after a break and wanted a budget rig, so I bought a Trace Elliot 1153 cab for £100 and an Orange Terror Bass for £350 and together they sound fantastic. The 1153 only weighs about 50lbs and is pretty compact so is easyish to carry around and they come up for sale fairly regularly as does the 2103, which is the 2x10 model in the same range. They are great cabs that have gone out of fashion I guess. If they had Bergantino or Aguilar on the front grill people would be raving about them, Review by Tombowlus here http://www.talkbass....hootout-358077/ Also don't discount Ashdown. Ignore all the woolly bollocks that some people spout. The Compact/Mini range sound good, are portable and can be picked up for peanuts. -
WW amps are about as common as Unicorns over here so you're probably asking in the wrong place. I know there are a lot of users on Talkbass so you may get more responses posting on there.

Confused? I certainly am I've never actually done this so it'd be useful if someone who had would chip in but bi-amping seems to be something not many people do. To put it slightly differently to help your understanding, looking at the back panel layout, there are two bi-amp outputs. One is for your high frequencies, one is for low frequencies. They are both line level so each of these outputs needs to drive it's own power amp and each power amp drives a speaker. So you need 2 separate power amps to bi-amp. One of these will be the internal power amp in the Tmax which you drive by looping the first crossover output into the "Pwr amp in" jack on the back of the Tmax and that will drive a speaker via the normal speaker jacks on the back of the amp. The second crossover output goes to your external power amp and then to another speaker. Then you'll have hours of fun messing around with the crossover frequency point and the balance control I'll be interested to know how you get on, whether it sounds pants or like the voice of God speaking through your Trace Elliots Edit: How the pre on the Tmax works is a whole other mystery. Again I will assume that the crossover outputs are post EQ so changing the pre-amp settings will affect both crossover outs the same.
-
No, the power amp of the Tmax would be providing half of your bi-amped high level output. I assume the "Pwr amp in" jack drives the power amp and gives an output on your speaker jacks. The external power amp, driven by the other crossover output, provides the other half.
-
I used to own a Tmax but never really got to grips with the Bi-amping feature. I can tell you though that you will need a seperate power amp to use it. My best guess is that you feed one of the crossover outputs into the Pwr amp in, which gives you half of the Bi-amped signal out of the speaker output on the Tmax, and the other crossover output goes to a seperate power amp. I don't know why they don't cover this in the owners manual
when ever I see a demo it is like everyone has had a Mark King brain wash.
Do a search on Youtube for Ed Friedland for some sensible gear reviews

I can't be sure but I think there's something missing
Hmm reading through this makes me think maybe I should bother contacting them again regarding the EB-150 I bought about 8 years ago which has cut out ever since I bought it. It's been off to them twice & to a tech down here once. No one has actually fixed it though.
I had a similar situation with a cab that got fried. It had to go back to them 3 times before they actually fixed it. I can't fault their helpfulness and desire to do the right thing but I just got the impression that their organisation is a bit haphazard.
-
I bought Dan's Trace/Elliot 1153. He described it as "well gigged". I'd describe it as as close to new condition as a cab that age is likely to be. Buy with confidence.
The Mex 60's Roadworn Jazz is a nitro finish. Tried an American Vintage and several others but walked out the door with the Roadworn. Nice weight, comfortable neck and very playable. Great bass
I've always been a bit sceptical of the factory relic thing but the RW seem to be amazingly good basses. Never heard a bad word about them. I was looking for a Jazz recently and I came close to buying one but in the end I liked the colour of the sunburst on the CS '64 and I managed to find a used one at a decent price.
-
If it's called a Roadworn then it's Mexican but the Mexican reissues are finished in Poly AFAIK. Confusing innit
Hi all, Im going nuts! Im interested in getting a Road Worn jazz bass in nitro but cant seem to figure how many different types their are. I can see the Mex 60's one is popular but is there a RW jazz in the American 62 Vintage series, which i would prefer i think. Gratious thanks Ian
The AV series doesn't have any relicked basses in the range. The Roadworn are all Mexican EDIT: The AV series are all finished in nitro though so buy one and use it for a few years and it'll be roadworn
As for not giving more colour choice in the hope more people will buy CS models, I can't really see that as true - surely if you want a custom colour on an off the shelf fender you get it resprayed for up to £250 rather than spending £1000s more on a CS version? I love the sparkly orange that MM do on the bongos, and those Big Als come in some interesting colours too. I love the deep blue and green Warwick do, no reason why fender couldn't do any of these!
Do people really spend £1000 on a bass and then another £250 to get it sprayed a different colour. Not a chance. For that sort of money you are getting close to Boutique builder territory. Fender are never going to offer the J or P in sparkly orange, because Fender are all about tradition and I would bet that sunburst is still their best seller. If James Jamerson played a sparkly orange Precision then it'd be in their catalogue.
-
Really? Since Leo left it looks like Fender have favoured the dart board method for figuring everything out!
Yes really. They still offer all the colours on guitars so they haven't forgotten they exist. If they don't offer them on basses then there's a good reason for it. These things don't happen by chance. For instance they used to offer LPB in the 1990s on the US Standard but discontinued it and it's now only available on the Mexican range. Multi million dollar corporations like Fender exist to make a profit and if they were making money on it it wouldn't have been discontinued. Colours like Shell Pink and Seafoam Green might be desirable to a few people on BC but I doubt there is enough mass appeal to justify producing them. One of Fender's main USPs has been their link with the past. You can look at footage from the 1960s and 70s and see classic bands with the same instruments you can buy today, so that means black, white or sunburst. Custom colours were rare. That kind of endorsement keeps Fenders selling, especially to people of a certain age
