Thanks Al, I exclusively played a Washburn 5 string for maybe 10 years In the 1990's and that had same string spacing as the Ibanez's , although it was horrendously neck heavy, and I did briefly play a basic SR300 , and TBH I do prefer a nice tight string spacing, I find standard Fenderish spacing a bit less easy. Unfortunately I recently had a bad problem with my back ( 5 weeks off work, couldn't even stand for first 4 days, not fun) , anyway a friend sent me some guitar parts to noodle over , I haven't played bass for maybe a year after retiring from covers band, but I thought about getting a 5 string because the extra low range would have worked nicely on the tunes. Hence looking for and finding a nice looking BB 235 for a decent price. However after playing for longer today I've been getting more back pain afterwards, I think primarily because the one fault of the BB414 is it's slightly neck heavy and not lightweight overall. So now I may have to go Ibanez and / or short scale. Will probably be best to wait until shops reopen to try them out. Blast. Thanks anyway.

Can anyone help please? I have, as previously shown in this thread, a rather lovely BB414 that is simply my 'forever bass' and now I'm thinking about a 5 string to replace my old Washburn, I've been made an offer on a BB235 that is very tempting, but will have to buy untested, what are people's experiences, if any?? I only play at home and low volume jams with a guitarist friend, so the 'tone' and pickups are of less concern than the general feel and build quality, are they still as solid as my 2008 Yammy? Cheers!!

I mean the band are individually phenomenal , I've heard much, much worse performances of this song in well established Pub covers bands, but what really floored me was the singer, her timing and phrasing, for me, is close to perfect. Also such a big voice for a kid.

I sooooooooo badly wanted to be Sav with that white pointy Hamer (Scarab bass??) back in the 80's, the hair, the (usually) ripped jeans, white trainers. 😉😆😆

Doug Pinnick from King's X. Especially when he had his mohawk hair. The other guys are brilliant players but, to be fair, look like extras from a Beatles tribute band.

Same here, haven't played bass for about a year (but have mucked about on a guitar), then last weekend a friend sent some Ideas for songs over and asked me to put some bass to them. Got my BB414 out of the cupboard ( hardly even needed tuning) and was instantly blown away by how good it sounded and felt so good to play. Will never part with mine.

Under 'normal' circumstances I'm quite lucky too, there's two PMT Stores and the dv247 store within 30 minutes drive, will def check one of these out when they reopen the physical shops 👍🎸

The surf and black ones are great, but when they do the five string in red.....will definitely get one.

It's all about what type of band you are going to be playing in, finding the bass /amp partnership that works for you, sometimes it's easy, sometimes....not so much. In my originals band for over 10 years I had one bass, a Washburn 5 string 'modern jazz' type bass. Never even looked at another bass. Once I started doing covers I wanted something lighter weight, more 'classic' and I had a Fender P Mex, then a Warwick Corvette with jazz pups, then a Mex Jazz, but eventually all were superseded by a Yamaha BB 414 purchased for £160 used off this site. It was perfect. I wish I'd kept the Warwick and Mex P bass, they were both great and I'd love to play them now I've'retired' from gigging, but every time I play the Yamaha at home after looking at basses I'd love to buy online, I think ' I've got all the bass I'll ever need in my hands....' When I started gigging in a covers band I got a cheap Mex P bass and read a lot of online stuff about 'essential' mods.....stuck in some Seymour Duncan quarter pounders and got a decent gotoh himass bridge. Two gigs later I changed it all back to stock as, to me, it sounded a lot better that way. Others may have preferred the moded sound but to me the original sounded just like a proper P bass should. The advice from this old git would be, ( and it sounds like you have decent pickups already), unless you are very unhappy with something....leave well alone....😆😆

I like to listen to Liza Tarbuks show when cooking the Saturday dinner for my tribe, she plays some very eclectic stuff (for radio 2), a few weeks back that included Janes Addiction ' Been caught stealing'. Shocked and happy!!!

So true, I'm on a couple of those facebook groups and love checking out some of the old stuff I'd forgotten about or missed! As I'm off work at the moment I did subscribe to spotify, even though I still prefer the physical CD, because it has been great just to dip into lots of new stuff, and also I found a way to put it through the stereo so can listen on proper speakers 🤘

That's the 'problem' with these sorts of threads, one tends to think of bands that you don't like that are successful as over-rated, whereas they are only successful because to enough people they are making music they want to listen to. Referencing the posts above, I love Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters but I can accept that others wouldn't, whereas I cannot abide The Clash, Stranglers, Bad Manners, Whitney Houston ( and wannabees), but I don't consider these acts as overrated, they have very much deserved their success because they've found an audience for their creative output, it's just not me. The best thing about these threads is finding new material in other peoples 'underrated' selections, IMO. Happy listening everyone.

I must be easily pleased, the only time I've been really underwhelmed by a band ( that I wanted to see, I've seen my fair share of small venue sh*te) live was Third Eye Blind a few years back. They were well past their peak but I loved the first 3/4 albums, but live they didn't appear to know the audience was there or care. Shame. Underrated is a tough one because some bands just don't resonate with 'the masses' for some reason so don't get the commercial success I'd thought they deserved, two of my favourite rock acts ever are King's X and Tesla, both of whom could be considered underrated because I think they are way better, within their genre, than many many bands who did a lot better financially.

Also in many urban areas RM usually work with two guys/gals in a van. Not any more, it's impossible to maintain 2 metre gap in the front of a vauxhall corsa van.

I am an awful guitar player...'agricultural' is a term I would use to describe my level of finesse, however I love ploughing out some power chords and riffs, and recently got one of these on a whim because I was 50. It's only an Epiphone but with a set up it plays very nicely so I can't blame the awful racket it makes on anything but myself. I also have a 1990's Washburn super strat which is the exact colour I always wanted a bass in.

Maybe I'm an odd sort, but I would really like to have one of these. Preferably in black. Then I can pretend I'm a bass playing James Hetfield. Oooooo yeah!!

I had a bash at that this afternoon. That's quite a swift little run isn't it?!! Learned 'Californication' by RHCP, which I love, nice bass line.

Doug Pinnicks tone isn't for everyone and probably wouldn't work in the majority of bands, but boy it works in his band.

Signed up for music lessons (free!!!!) at my sixth form college (1985) to learn guitar, but when I turned up there were three of us, one could absolutely shred on guitar and just signed up because they forced you to do something (or sports) , and the other could keep decent time on drums. So I defaulted to bass so we could have a band. Fast forward to today, played bass for 35 years in bands, retired from live work now, I just got an Epiphone Les Paul to try to eventually learn guitar. ( the strings are SO SMALL😆😆)

Hi, no the one I saw , and pictured, is the Aztec gold American original 50's precision. The Vintera isn't as sparkly as this I think, though there are some great colour schemes on the Vinteras too.
